Game Recap: Padres 2 – Mets 1

Result: The Mets dropped their second straight Sunday, 2-1, to the Padres at PETCO Park.

Odrisamer Despaigne

Need to Know: Mets starter Zack Wheeler was sharp again, striking out seven and surrendering only Yasmani Grandal’s fourth-inning solo homer. But Wheeler exited on the wrong end of a 1-0 deficit because San Diego starter Odrisamer Despaigne flirted with the franchise’s first-ever no-hitter, baffling the Mets for 7 2/3 innings.

The Mets rallied in the eighth. Daniel Murphy’s two-out double broke up the no-hitter, and David Wright followed with a single that tied the game at 1. Jeurys Familia worked into and out of trouble in the eighth inning, but Vic Black’s ninth-inning misplay cost the Mets an out. Seth Smith’s infield single, which eluded Josh Edgin, pushed home Cameron Maybin for the winning run of the Padres’ 2-1 victory.

Game Ball: To Despaigne, who mastered the Mets, surrendering just two hits and one run in 7 2/3 innings. The righty was one strike from taking a no-hitter to the ninth inning in his fifth career start.

What’s Next: The Mets venture up the coast to Seattle to take on the Mariners. Jon Niese (5-4, 2.96 ERA) will make his return from the disabled list and will be opposed by Seattle’s Roenis Elias (7-8. 4.54).

Its interesting to talk about Flores and Tejada all the time. Certainly Flores deserves a chance again at some position.

But, thats not even a top issue with this team. They need a more productive, consistent left fielder and first baseman. They absolutely need to catch and throw the ball. If the defense wasnt so pathetic they would likely be a few games over .500 and hoping to compete for the wild card at this point.

9th inning defense was pathetic. They are a poor team. There is more to baseball than pitching.

And so begins the annual slog to insignificance. The Cuban kid pitched a great game but the Mets looked disinterested from the first inning. Honestly, team could have easily been swept this weekend. A dearth of clutch hitting and relievers who cannot field their positions. Plus how do you walk a guy (on FOUR PITCHES) who is batting all of .176. You knew they would stick with 6 outfielders until the inevitable slide. Bring up (AND PLAY) Flores. Bid farewell to Bobby Abreu and Chris Young--two wasted roster spots.

We have 6 outfieders and none of them are any good.No SS and catcher. All we have is Murphy,Wright,Duda and great pitching.

I notice that the Mets relievers are horrible fielders. Edgin was ridiculous on that play.

Same old Mets. And people on here actually wanted to trade prospects for rental guys. Unbelievable. Did anybody actually expect them to not tank it after the break?

This doesnt feel good whatsoever, especially heading to Seattle where they have a much better offense.

The only silver lining was Zack,he pitched one hell of a game and seems to be finding that consistancy that has been questioned over and over with him.

Pad's pitcher looked alright, but there's no reason we couldnt put up more than one run.Not much else to say,the "feel good"times feel as though they are over.

On Saturday night my wife and daughter said they double cursed the Mets and a Met player would trip over his own feet for the loss. Tell them to stop cursing the Mets. Also, about six years ago I lost my lucky rabbits foot and the Mets had the awful skid in 2008.

Hate to say it, but if I have a feeling they are going to get swept in Seattle. In fact I'd bet they are going to be pretty ugly games. I hope I'm wrong, but it feels just like it has coming out of the break the last few years. Two losses to an anemic Padres team is not a good sign. Now they'll face a couple of teams that have much better lineups than San Diego.

Here comes are losing streak again.  Its a roller coaster ride with this team.  Headed for the bottom.  Losing 2 out of 3 to the Padres shows that they can't compete.  Seattle and Brewers are going to crush them.  Seasons over!!

Wheeler has given up 1 run or less in 5 of his last 6 starts

F TC for playing Black/Edgin in the 9th. Did Terry forget that he needs to win this game?

If we finish 500 this road trip I'm satisfied I still believe that is a possibility

Not pinch hitting Nieuwenhuis for Tejada with the bases loaded was just typical LOL Terry.

Tough loss, Mets need to bounce back against a tough team in the Mariners. The Mets showed great character today despite the loss, that Cuba pitcher was incredibly tough to hit, so many different pitches with different speeds and good location

I will save any proclamations of the season being over, this being the same ol Mets, or the Mets are only a half season team, until AFTER August 15th.  If the Mets play well for the next month, more wins than loses, it'll go a long way toward some of us TRULY believing in this team.  Winning 9 of 11 before the AS break, doesn't get it done.

Start a 41 YO LF? Have EY steal down 4 runs yesterday? Don't PH Campbell? FIRE TC!

Frustrating to lose 2 out of 3 to the lowly Padres, even in their ballpark.  They got great pitching in two straight games.  Even with these losses, and it's only three games after the ASB, let's not predict the typical post-ASB swoon.  Let's see how things play out by the time the Mets return home at least.

This is what happens which when you face a great pitcher, they pitch great. It happens, shut up and wait for tomorrows win.

@Kenneth Meltsner No interest in Flores and Murphy up the middle at the same time together for me.

@cleonsvan The Manager doesnt put in the time with the team They dont cover well they dont have a wheel play they are confused on shifts with coverage on DP. Terry just has ideas but no instruction. They are bad ideas.

@John Sickvery WTF??? R u kidding?  I hope so for if not u know NOTHING about the game.  They have a COMBINED era of less than 3.5!!!  Help me understand why u have a problem w them being in the game at that time.  He already had used Familia.

@cduran The Mets are 1 and 2 against the Padres! Do you really think the Mets will do better against the Mariners and the Brewers?

Tejada's career OBP is .329, Kirk's is .310.  Tejada's OBP this season is .355, Kirk's is .339.

C.K. Dexter Haven
C.K. Dexter Haven

@sbl03 LHB's were 1 for 11 off Despaigne today.  Are you assuming Kirk would've gotten a hit? or are you saying it was just the right baseball play to PH for Tejada?

Also, the inning before d'Arnaud had a man on 2nd with 2 outs and K'd looking.  2 out RBIs are tough, so why is this on Tejada?

Bob Higgins

@sbl03  I hear what your saying. But who on the bench can play short ?  I hate Tejada and Collins !

@Max Blay Great pitcher? This was his fifth career start. And BTW, the Mets were favored today.

1harris1

@Max Blay  So when they lose tomorrow, what will the excuse be?

They're basically a .500 team that will have its ups and downs.  They're not a legitimate playoff contender with the lineup they put out there regularly.  Enjoy some of the young pitching (Wheeler, deGrom, Familia, Mejia);and hope that ownership/management can make the necessary moves to improve the every day lineup.  They're not a lost cause by any means, but they have a ways to go to be truly good.

@Max Blay  Guess last night's pitcher was great, too.  Hmmmm, I wonder how the Padres suck balls with all this great pitching...?

@Mexpert @cleonsvan  The manager is supposed to teach major league pitchers how to field?  Are you joking???  How come when someone straightens out there swing in AAA, Wally was a such a help.  When they come up and cant field, its the Major League managers fault.  You don't like Terry Collins, that is fine.  Blaming him because the pitchers can't field is ludicrous.

lindro88
lindro88

@kefhrny17  They gave up 4 runs the first night  and 6 the second to a team that hadn't scored in forever.  I don't mind if they give up a few runs, but find a way to beat that team.

@kefhrny17 You lose 6-0 pitching and the offense gets an F for that L.

He only had a problem with TC using those guys cause of the botched plays,if they were to make the plays and we come out winners he would of said TC was a savior.

They also went 3 and 1 against the braves, your point? There pitching has been great that's all it takes to win or at least have a chance to Win

@birtelcom Tejada's OBP this year is a joke, the only reason why he gets as many walks as he does is because despite the fact that he can't hit his way out of a paper bag, our pitchers have to be the worst hitting group in the history of the league.

Peter Loibl
Peter Loibl

@birtelcom Come on, we all know that Tejada's OBP is a mirage batting in front of the pitcher. Sometimes the eye test is better than manipulated statistics.

Put Campbell there or put wright therebut the bottom line is we needed some runs not a tapper back to the pitcher

cduran

Yes great character, a team that didn't give up against a insanely tough pitcher they were facing for the first time. The same pitcher that had not aloud more than two runs against an by other team including the dodgers.

jenkins

@1harris1 I think a lot of fans knew getting to.500 would be the ceiling for this team. They can't hit at all. That's been the case all year.

Billy Suede

@rock44 @Max Blay their pitching is solid. they simply have a horrific offense. can't expect your staff to throw shutouts to win every game.

Max Blay

Because they have a historically bad offense. Their runs came on a Homer and an infield hit

The Padres have the best home ERA of any team in baseball this season, 2.65.

lindro88

@James @kefhrny17  Regardless... This series pitching will be a bigger issue.  The Pads can't hit anyone.  The M's can.

@shawnp6986 I don't think anyone has ever called TC a Savior on this forum.

James

@cleonsvan @John Sickvery @cduran They can also still go 2-8.  We have seen this movie the last two years after the ASB, I hope you are right, but this was a game the Mets had to have.

birtelcom
birtelcom

If the Padres can make that 2.65 home ERA stand up for a a full season, it would be the lowest home ERA by any team in 24 years.
