Game recap: Nationals 7 – Mets 1

Recap: The Mets dropped their series opener, 7-1, at the hands of the Washington Nationals on Tuesday night at Citi Field.

MLB: Washington Nationals at New York Mets

Need to Know: The Nationals blasted four home runs, three of which came off Mets starter Rafael Montero. The right-hander, who was making his first start in the Majors since May 30, allowed five runs and seven hits in five-plus innings to take the loss. Mets killer Ian Desmond struck his 20th home run of the season, and his fifth against the Mets.

Anthony Rendon, Bryce Harper and Michael Taylor each also struck homers, with Taylor’s serving as his first Major League blast.

Eric Campbell drove in the lone Mets run, driving in Daniel Murphy with an eighth-inning sacrifice fly.

What’s Next: The Mets will give the ball to Bartolo Colon (11-9, 3.97), hoping to even the three-game series. Jordan Zimmermann (7-5, 3.06) will oppose the burly right-hander. Game time will be 7:10 p.m.

Fairly obvious now that they're not gonna bring-up Noah until September, if at all. Why not give the guy a shot? Does anyone really want to sit-through another Dice-K start? Another thought: Why doesn't Terry give Wright a knock during the (increasingly frequent) blow-outs?

I'm puzzled by Montero. Granted, he's got much to learn and he is young. But, you don't survive the PCL as well as he has by throwing fat pitches. If he's susceptible to throwing HR balls, the PCL would show that, in spades. Maybe it was nerves. Whatever he's doing to get it done in Vegas should look better than this in Queens.

Really tired of losing to the Nats...

Would have been nice to make more of a game of it by scoring more runs..but Fister is a good pitcher so? next draft I would definitely take the best pitcher available you can never have enough.

I think you have to have patience with Montero I think he will get better..remember theres only one way to learn and that's by pitching more and gaining experience...remember Colin McHugh and how horrible he looked? He isn't horrible anymore..and pitching well for Houston.Would also help if we could score more than 1 run.

Montero looks like he's not ready for big league . His numbers are horrible.

Colon pitches today for NY, not some other team, that's a good thing! With the injury to Hefner, the uncertainty of Harvey, the struggles of Neise and Montero, Bartolo may be important next year and a bargain at 11 million, things change very quickly, we shall see

If montero neise and gee keep pitching like this, their not going to be worth much and maybe forced to deal Syndergard for a big bat. Maybe that's one of the reasons Sandy is not bringing him up here along with the super 2 crap. So he don't get his ass kicked and trade value don't go down.

Right now if you're any team with the big bad your telling them that you want Syndergard or Wheeler along with Degroom in any deal. 2 of the 3. and with the way those other guys are pitching they would have every right to

I think every mets starter not named matt harvey truly has no idea if they will be on this team next year. I'm ok with losing these games. We aren't making the playoffs and each loss from here on out can increase the chances of Collins getting fired. I want to lose but have the players develop and have good individual performances to help evaluate for next season.

Familia needs to be the closer......He has the stuff and the toughness....His pitches are nasty.........Mejia, throws to many hanging sliders that are down the middle, and he too is a head case.....

Montero's does not have enough movement on his pitches......No one is fooled........Back to the drawing board for him......I'm 63 and if you put me in a batting cage with 90 mile an hour heat, i will hit most pitches....... We got beat tonight by a guy who can not break a window .......Movement is the key.......

Hmm. I see the schoolyard has let out and the boys are at it again. I wish they would play somewhere else, like the Yankee blog for instance.

@rstpigeon  He will get better..just needs to pitch more and learn.

@pologround I think Mejia will be traded this offseason in a package for a bat.  I believe the plan is for Familia to be the setup man for Parnell next season, assuming he can pitch.

@pologround Anyone who ever knew how to swing a bat will eventually be able to crack 90 mph straight fastballs after a half hour  in a batting cage....you are 100% correct. There's no way his current arsenal is going to work in the majors.

He has a lot of potential but he isnt even close yet.

Richard Davis

@Michael Scarn @pologround  Yeah, now that the back end of the bullpen finally looks stable, let's dismantle it for a guy who will be coming back from TWO surgeries; neck and TJ.  While we're at it, let's see if we can get Krod and Heilman back.

pologround
pologround

@yankeehater @pologround He has a live arm, and in AAA he can compete.....He needs to learn from a vet like Colon......LOL, one pitch and he still gets batters to look foolish......Hopefully Colon is on the team next year........JN is very fragile, and as much as i like Harvey, he needs to calm down........If JN is traded i would not lose any sleep, as long as we get a quality SS in return OR the dude from COL.......

@2ndhalffun @xjimmybxx He's definately on something

@pologround Well, somebody isnt going to  be here next year, whether its niese, gee or colon who knows. Niese has the benefit of being our only lefty though.

One pitcher is white and one isn't. That's everything that needs to be said about Jimmybx.

Full disclosure: I do not think Montero is a bust, nor did I think that of Wheeler.

yankeehater

@xjimmybxx @borsh13 Wheeler wont even be a 2?? Have you been watching him? I guess Randy Johson never became an ace either because he was wild as a youngster?

Greg Nichols
Greg Nichols

They said the same thing about Nolan Ryan. Wheeler can be an ace. I believe being slightly wild is an advantage.

spelletrader

You do realize that Wheeler's control has improved markedly over this season, right? A simple Google search will bring up dozens of articles documenting the improvement. It's been the single biggest contributing factor to his recent success.

You blow smoke like a steam engine.

I have neither hate not envy for you Jimmy. I see you for exactly what you are. Sometimes I agree with you, sometimes I don't. All in all it makes little difference, pixels on a screen.

Nice machismo though, very impressive puffed internet chest.

spelletrader
spelletrader

Why wouldn't you be happy that he's pitched well and hope that he continues to improve? Aren't you a fan of the team?

spelletrader
spelletrader

Nice pivot attempt. Then you use a one game start to judge one pitcher, while previously stating that five starts are too little to judge another. You're all over the place.

You talk yourself up and then state something as ridiculous as "control isn't learned".

You aren't even worth the effort.

spelletrader
spelletrader

You honestly think that Maddux didn't bust his ass learning to control the baseball? Don't insult the work that these players put into their profession. I do not believe that you played the game at any serious level. If so, it's good that you never progressed any further.

spelletrader
spelletrader

You get pretty worked up, get your blood pressure checked.

spelletrader
spelletrader

I'm not arguing the merits of either pitcher. Neither is currently what they are going to be, so it's not even a subject to be argued.

You're arguments are inane. Of course control is learned, it can also be limited by ability.

Maddux drilled religiously to learn and master control. Not just location either, but making each pitch look identical out of his hand and to the plate, for as long as possible. Not all have the dedication or ability to master control as he did, but every young pitcher can learn and improve.

Oh and Maddux sported a 92 mph fastball at one time.

Doubleday
Doubleday

@spelletrader ... and Nolan Ryan had to learn control, too.  The Mets dealt him to the Angels because they thought he would never learn to control his fastball.  Patience.

@xjimmybxx @borsh13  if you are such a great baseball mind and know so much more then the rest of the world - especially the caucasian world - how come all you are is some internet tough guy that spouts nonsense on here and not someone who is employed by a major league baseball team?  I guess since most of the teams are run by white guys, they must all be to stupid to see your brillance.  You my friend are a complete moron and your racial prejudice knows no bounds.  I would say you are a discrace to your race but thats really not true.  You are a disgrace to the entire human race.  Now you can put on your tough guy pants and send some nasty comments my way.  I will give them the attention they deserve, absolutly none at all.

Chris Kujawa

There's a pitcher on thus staff that's gone from blow it by everyone to be strictly a control pitcher. Bartolo Colon.

spelletrader

Straw man arguments never "own" anything. Your posts are an exercise in mental masturbation.

spelletrader

Control is about repeating mechanics flawlessly. That only comes through practice and repetition. You only sit on your ass and judge results. Poorly.

What other baseball skills does your God only grant to some but not others? He's a pretty selective dude.
