Game recap: Nationals 5 – Mets 3 (13 innings)

Recap: The Mets dropped the rubber game of their three-game series in Washington, 5-3, in 13 innings.

Need to Know: Bryce Harper struck his fourth home run of the season in the 13th inning off Mets reliever Carlos Torres to lift the Nats. Ian Desmond struck a home run and drove in three runs. The Mets trailed 3-1 entering the seventh inning but tied the score thanks to Eric Young Jr.’s sacrifice fly and Curtis Granderson’s RBI single with two outs. Mets starter Jacob deGrom allowed just three runs and six hits in six innings, and did not factor in the decision.

Game Ball: Harper had two hits, including the walk-off homer against Torres.

Up Next: The Mets will send Bartolo Colon (10-9, 4.12) to the mound in the opener of their four-game, wrap-around series with the Phillies. A.J. Burnett (6-11, 4.16) will start for the Phillies. First pitch will be 7:05 p.m.

Eff TC / Management for playing Flores. Everytime he plays, the team loses.

Nobody would take the Wright contract on. He will be here for the duration. Ok but next year he has got to be put in the 6 hole, unless o f course the Mets don't spend again.

Not saying that Mike Stanton is a realistic option ... But ... I am seeing a lot of chatter about how the Mets would never land such a key player from a divisional foe. In short, I disagree -- here is a short list of key players the Mets acquired via trade from teams in their division:

Keith Hernandez

Gary Carter

Juan Samuel

Mike Piazza

Carlos Delgado

Just something to chew on ...

Well if we sweep the phillies and nats at home we'll be at .500 lol

Phillies just scored 5 runs in the 8th to take a 6-5 lead on the Astros.  Mets are going to Philly just as they are on a bit of an upswing.  I have a feeling this 4 game series could get ugly.

Need to go all in on Stanton if he is on the market, everyone should be on the table excluding Thor, Harvery wheeler and Degrom. Thinking package of Plawecki, Montero, Nimmo or Conforto, and an 2b Reynolds, Flores or Herrera. A combination of the four who will all be in AAA or starting in mlb next year. Its a lot considering most are top 100 prospects or close to but that it what is going to cost.

Definitely want Stanton befoe Tulo. Younger and less likely to brake down in near future.

When the season is over, David Wright will finally admit his shoulder hurt all year.

Guys, let's hope to get swept by the Phillies. A long losing streak is the only way Sandy & Co will change course.   Otherwise, look forward to a lower payrolls and less offense next season.

...and with that, any hope for the 2014 Mets season is extinguished.

As it should be. Right or wrong, we were playing/chasing a team that bettered themselves at the deadline and is serious.

Maybe if the Mets had made any kind of move to improve their offense there would have been a lift to this team after the deadline. I think not doing anything tells the team "We're not good enough to take any kind of risk" (any trade has risk with it)

Will Alderson just face the reality of this year and start preparing for next year?

What's funny is how other team fans view their managers.

I'm in Atlanta and the fans here have never liked Freddie Gonzalez. Nats fans think Matt Williams is terrible (as do some people on here). Bruce Bochy can't handle a club (despite winning two World Series), Don Mattingly is incompetent and Joe Maddon is past his prime (until they started winning).

Fans everywhere think their managers are the worst . Even when they win

I get that your tired of losing, but tieing it to Flores??? Wilmer played fine. I would look at the RBI guys who continue to underperform.

Plus those trades were before Sandy & co

Keep on dreaming. It ain't happening. Piazza was never really a marlin and Juan Samuel was a bum.

Hope the Yankees pick him up.

@Tormented Mets Fan Teams are required to put some players on waivers I believe. it means nothing other than a formality. Wright has been on waivers before, I think.

Hahahahahahaha wishful thinking. This team can't even score 2 runs per game. I say a split. Season over.

@alphaq  Phillies are only 2 games behind the Mets in the standings.  Just saying.

A long losing streak isn't going to change the ownership of the team though, which is really the biggest problem .

@hashburry  Nope CY and Tejada will be right back in there when they should be giving playing time to Kirk, MDD, and Flores.

@hashburry The first step would be admitting he made a mistake and dropping CY.

Alderson and Collins have to face something else with this pitching staff the Mets should be over 500 and in the pennant race. But their offense has been so bad that they are buried. This idea of getting all these low average power hitters didn't work and it's time for a new approach.

@theglider  I can remember some yankmee fan friends ridiculing Joe Torre back when his team was winning. They felt the team was winning despite Torre. It's been awhile, but I think the complaint was the handling of the pen.

@theglider Not sure what people you are referring to regarding Bochy.  The fans in SF, where I live love the guy and in Baseball America he was just listed as one of  the best Managers in the NL.

@alphaq @Brandon Hillman Tigers traded for Miguel Cabrera who had better stats and was one year younger plus Dontrel Willis for 6 prospects. Stanton can be had for 4. On a side note not one of those prospects ever amounted to a full time regular in mlb. Closest is Camerin Maybin who was the center piece along with pitcher Andrew Miller.

@Max Denby . .  Sandy probably thought CY would rebound like Byrd did. Well it didn't happen with CY. Sometimes you win and this time Sandy loss. Who will be the next reclamation player Sandy signs?

Read the Giants blog, the equivalent of this one. Any move he makes us questioned, like it is on here. Because the fans who question on these blogs seem to know.

Maddon is a clown and not what this team needs. They need a no-nonsense guy that tells it like it is. A guy the young ones look up to and have a relationship. They already have that manager in the system and they should pull the trigger on Wally. Not only is he a guy that will light a fire under these guys, but he genuinely cares and has a passion to win versus Terry who looks like a toddler confused that just woke up from a nap. It's time for the garden gnome to retire. Wally also knows how to develop players on any level. Just pull the trigger already. The fan base and players are behind him.

Cabrera was traded out of the league, not just out of the division. If Miami was going to trade Stanton he wouldn't go to a team in the NL East.

You and some others don't seem to understand that.

Max Denby
Max Denby

@theglider You make a good point, although any sane fan in baseball would take Bochey, or Madden over Terry Collins.  When the mets drop him, he will be VERY hard pressed to find another job.

Brandon Hillman
Brandon Hillman

@theglider What about when they traded Piazza to the mets for Preston Wilson and others? That was a generational talent in his prime as well.

theglider
theglider

Agreed, but because of his age. This team has had such little talent the past few years. Now the have young pitching that was non existent in 2011.

It's amazing how most good managers have talent on their teams.

1harris1
1harris1

@Brandon Hillman  Different ownership with the Marlins at that time.  Huizenga was holding a fire sale, and didn't care where any of his players went.  Entirely different situation with the Marlins these days.

Max Denby
Max Denby

@theglider Yet some managers / teams seem to bring the very best out of players.  Terry is surely not one those guys.  My point is, if you are going to have a low payroll and limited talent, it's ESSENTIAL you have a great manager, who can squeeze every drop of talent out of his guys.

The only way teams like this years Mets make improbable runs is when they are inspired.

Brandon Hillman
Brandon Hillman

@1harris1 @Brandon Hillman Year to year is different situation but the package I mentioned fills everyhole the marlins have. Catcher 2b they need an extra starter the rotation isnt as good at the start of the year and OF to replace Stanton. It might not happen, but you never know. Package wise it is fair. And you don't know till you try.

theglider
theglider

The Marlins are not trading him into the same division. What part of that statement are you having difficulty with?

One more time: The Marlins are not trading him into the same division.

theglider
theglider

Because it's how baseball works. Teams don't trade established stars to make the team they need to beat better. They trade established stars out of the division, or the league, so they don't have to face those stars 18 times a year.

Rimo Chaloney
Rimo Chaloney

@Brandon Hillman @theglider  It's a different era in baseball.  Premium power hitters are rarer than ever.  Stanton is one of those few premium (and young at that) power hitters in all of baseball.  It would take a huge load of talent to pry him loose from Miami.  And they are on the verge of a nice run these next few years with their young pitching talent so why would they trade him?

theglider
theglider

And again, that Marlins team was looking to get rid of anyone on the cheap. They went from world champs to losing 108 games the next year.

This Marlins team isn't having a fire sale. You were told this already. Do you just ignore it?
