Game Recap: Mets 9 – Marlins 1

Result: The Mets put a pounding on the Marlins, sweeping the series with a 9-1 victory heading into the All-Star Break.

Need to Know: Jacob deGrom tossed seven innings of one run baseball, allowing five hits and walking two. He struck out eight Marlins. The only run came after Eric Campbell lost a ball in the sun in short right field, which dropped in for a double. Later, an infield single would drive in a run.

Every Mets starter picked up a hit, save for Ruben Tejada. David Wright and Chris Young both drove in two runs. Wright had two hits and scored twice. Curtis Granderson had three hits, a walk, drove in one and scored twice. DeGrom even helped his own cause with an RBI single.

Jeurys Familia and Buddy Carlyle pitches scoreless innings in relief.

Game Ball: deGrom and the offense as a whole deserve the game balls today.

The funny thing about being a Met fan is that you are NEVER comfortable with a lead--regardless of the size. Team is up 5-1 in the 8th. Marlins have long-since mailed it in. First guy hits a seed at Wright. Next two guys reach base. Stomach starts churning. Familia, who really didn't need to be in there--again--induces a DP. We have been trained to expectt he worst. That's what seven years of uninspired baseball does to a fan base. Yes, they have played well. And are actually hitting. But, as Gary pointed-out, the team's recent post-All Star break numbers leave much to be desired. Maybe Keith is right and the worm has turned. I sure hope so.

But seriously though, who are these guys?

CY had 2 RBI with 2 or fewer ABs for the second game in a row.  The last Met with 2 ribbies and fewer than 3 ABs two games in a row was a guy even more beloved by Mets fans than Chris Young -- Bobby Bonilla, who had two sac flies in four plate appearances on August 23, 1993, and the next day had a two-run homer and two walks in four plate appearances.

ESPN.com - Flores enters Sunday on a 17-game hitting streak. He's hitting .382 (26-for-68) with 7 homers & 28 RBIs during that stretch in the Pacific Coast League.

Wow - work on your defense too, Wilmer.

I say; Sandy should play it out here so we can get a good look at these players. Let's see what Kirk has, let's find out if Travis D has what it takes. The team is coming together and playing well. We need answers going into to next year and perhaps this crew can complete for a playoff spot this year..... If not..... Play your hand out. See what Colon can give you if anything and if it's nothing good, then keep him.

Now is the time to make a trade for a big bat and win this division while it's there for the taking. Also the Mets can take over the city and the back pages since the Yankees are done for the rest of the year.

like to comment on continuous use of center field camera to cover met games on tv!has it occurred to the geniuses in the truck that the fan watching on t/v would rather watch he game from the perspective of the box seats behind and to the side of home plate rather than from the bleacher seats!

I hate to say it, if only not to jinx it, but watching them warm up yesterday, they had some swagger in their step. Starting to look like a team. Hope it keeps. Wilpons aside.

Terrific homestand by the Mets. Once again, the All-Star break is coming at the worst possible time, as the team has become legitimately fun to watch for the first time all year.

We can't kid ourselves here - there's still a long way to go. I really, really hope the Mets don't come out of the break ice cold, as they have several years in a row. I hope Duda has really turned a corner here and isn't going to fall back into the .230s when the bell rings for the second half, and that Nieuwenhuis, who looks like a different player this year, doesn't revert to being a strikeout machine. Guess all we can do now is wait and see.

In the meantime, I hope Murphy gets into the game in Minneapolis and gets a big hit for the NL.

For the first time in years I'm actually disappointed I have to go 4 days without the mets.

We got the teamwork to make the dream work. Let's go... Let's go Mets!!!

I do wonder where do all the self hating Mets fans go when the team does well? Is there a club they go to where they can yell about Sandy and the Wilpons and bemoan all the failed prospects from the past? I can hear it now "Alex Escobar they should have traded him"

Syndergaard closed out the game for the US.

Struck out the first batter

Retired the second on a groundball

Single to center

Fly ball to center

His power curveball is vicious, and he changed speeds well throughout.

Looks like Vegas boosts his ERA up a bit

if the Mets somehow get into the wild card game, i will drink a pitcher of kool-aid and put it on youtube.

I HOPE THE METS DON'T TRADE ANYONE, JUST WAIT AND SEE HOW THINGS GO.

I guess Campbell looked okay out there today at 2B?  It would help if he can play a little 2B and SS capably, although I thought he looked bad at 3B when Wright was out.

His potential bat is good enough to play anywhere in the infield except short... Murphy is my fav met right now but if we can get a left fielder with some pop and at least 270 average id be willing to trade the murph... I want to see what flores can do here with more consistant time but our only hole in the infield is short and although he made most of the playes he doesn't look like he can play the position

The Mets have been taking the "let's get a good look at these players" approach for a long time now. I prefer they start taking the " let's get the best players we can now so we can win for a change" approach.

@whizz17 just as in the late 90's early 00's, the Post and Daily will put Yankees losses on the back page over Mets wins. Dont kid yourself, they all love to hate on the Mets.

@Alan Pratesi First it's not just Mets games, it's every baseball game, in almost every league.

Second, you're nuts.

Disagree. I'm not a fan of the behind the plate view at all.

As optimistic as I always am if this team wants to show me they are in a playoff race a sweep in sd is not enough... Put ur foot on their throat and embarrass them... Win every game by 3 or more and at that point i will be on my soap box telling all my Yankee fan friends how the mets are going to shock the world

@Tormented Mets Fan At some point deGrom will reach his innings limit. Haven't we all seen enough of Dice-K? Bring up Thor and work him into the rotation.

@rodd Don't worry, the probability of that happening is slim to none.

@Jaime Duda has been pretty awesome the past 2 months. If what we are seeing now is real, he will be a very solid 1b for us for a long time.

get over what we dont have and start enjoying what we do. which is a solid team that has a lot of growth potential.

Dont be a knucklehead. We weren't going to commit $78m on a first baseman when we were trying to unload Ike and his $3M deal. Or did you miss it when Sandy told you he needs this team to win and draw fans back to the park so he can add payroll?

specialk

@Jaime You do know that all the NL teams were hesistent on Abreu because the belief was he could not play first base everyday and was a DH? There are other factors that aren't so cut and dry with these guys.  You wanted Cruz for 3 years 45 mill, well no one else offered him that.  There is a reason he only got 1 for 8 mill.  Yes both players have proved doubters wrong but everyone was a doubter not just the Mets.

@Doubleday  And we also turned two 4-6-3 DPs which usually has a lot to do with the shortstop.

Tejada is doing fine now.  Not a problem for the moment.

Wow you are pretty demanding. The Padres have decent pitching; I would be happy if we took the series, and that's that.

@1harris1 @Doubleday I am making reference to a post I made twice today, where I called out the front office for how they handled Tejada this off-season.  It was removed twice.  Seems someone upstairs doesn't like criticism.

Doubleday

@1harris1 @Doubleday I don't dislike Tejada.  He's not my favorite, but even if I didn't like him at all, there's no excuse for how they badmouthed him.

1harris1

@Doubleday  Agreed.  Alderson completely destroyed the guy's confidence with his thoughtless comments made last year, as well as during the previous offseason.  Collins has gone out of his way to restore Ruben's confidence this year, and it seems like it's paying off a bit.  I don't think Ruben is a long term answer at SS, but he's holding his own out there for now.
