Game recap: Mets 8 — Athletics 5

Result: The Mets jumped out to an early lead and held on for an 8-5 win Wednesday afternoon.

Need to Know: Lucas Duda blasted a three-run home run to cap a five-run third inning against Jeff Samardzija. Duda’s 23 homers are tied for fourth in the National League. Zack Wheeler had his streak of nine consecutive quality starts snapped but moved over .500 (9-8) for the first time this season, allowing four runs (two earned) over 5 2/3 innings. Daniel Murphy, Curtis Granderson and Eric Campbell each had two hits, an RBI and a run scored and the Mets bullpen allowed just one run in 3 2/3 innings, with Jeurys Familia picking up his fourth save of the season.

Game Ball: Duda, who delivered the big blow that proved to be the difference in the game and continues to pad his career-high home run total.

What’s Next: The Mets are off tomorrow before heading to Los Angeles for a three-game weekend series with the Dodgers. The Mets and Jonathon Niese (7-8, 3.50 ERA) caught a break when the Dodgers announced Clayton Kershaw was pushed up in the rotation because of Zach Greinke’s elbow discomfort. Dan Haren (10-10, 4.59) will face Niese Friday.

I would also add in to successful players this year besides Duda and deGrom....  Jeurys Familia, Jenrry Mejia, Josh Edgin, Zach Wheeler, Vic Black,  and Juan Lagares

Although Wilmer Flores has been a disappointment with his bat so far, you just can't complain about his fielding at this point in time...He has held his own in the field with 1 error [a few screw-ups also] and his RBI total will surpass Reuben Tejada shortly with many less games played.."IF" he picks it up like most believe he will, and "IF" he's still a Met next year, he may surprise most of you and turn into a viable piece for them...Lots of "IF's" though...

I know they won...but the writeup has to mention Murphy once again looking like he isn't using a glove when playing 2b.

Duda and deGrom are the best things that have happened for the Mets this year.  Lets hope they continue next year.  Duda might hit 30 this year

Just read that Carlos Gonzalez had major knee surgery and he might not be ready by spring training, I'm not sure if that decreases or increases the chances the Mets will trade for him.

i don't get all the folks who call in to wfan and want jose reyes back… what 20 million for an injury prone 260 hitter… please. give me back my tejada and lets ride it out. mets have too many guys hitting 220 to be competitive any who

David Wright  at bats look so bad.

The fact that Duda is 4th in the league in home runs with 24 shows you how ridiculous things were 10 years ago

We have some money! If we can flush 7.5 million down the toilette for C Young, We have more money than we proclaim!

Angels ace Richards seriously hurt covering first. Bartolo may have a landing spot now.

@saxon I still don't buy him as an everyday SS. Especially on a team that has Daniel Murphy manning 2B, and it's starting to look like he'll be back for at least the beginning of next year. I just can't see going into a season with a defensive infield of d'Arnaud (who's fielding behind the plate has been regressing ever since he was called back), Duda, Murphy, Wright, and Flores in order. Other than Wright, that is at least a potential liability at every other position on the infield. Hard to sell to your pitching staff, who this team is supposed to be built around.....

@robby very few on this forum thought Duda could do the job.  don't hear that much anymore.  funny the way that works.

Don't forget second half TdA and Wheeler. They've each been great in their own ways.

@Alan Gorkin

Since Reyes left the Mets, he has hit about .290 with OPS over .770.  This year, only Lucas Duda has a higher OPS on the Mets.

Reyes is not a .260 hitter. Not even close.

Almost as bad as Murphy playing "defense".

thecasuaLGM
thecasuaLGM

@sjm25 point? He also has 28 defensive runs saved in 87 games

thecasuaLGM
thecasuaLGM

@hubie_wc have they even put him on waivers yet? I thought they were holding him back because they perceive he will have more value in the off season as opposed to now. more importantly, what can LAA offer in return?

rico

@hubie_wc why is it so imperative they trade Colon?  He wasn't even placed on waivers

Eddie_Dean

@nagel100 @robby I'll be the first to admit, I wanted Ike to stay and Duda moved. But I'm also not the one paid millions of dollars to make those decisions. I give Sandy & co. credit, he nailed that one.

Alan Gorkin
Alan Gorkin

@ken1010 ok, but still not worth close to 20 million a year the way he gets hurt all the time

josef

@ken1010 They should have traded Wright and kept Reyes, in retrospect!lol

@borsh13 Now if you hit 35 HRs, you Are God! Back then, with 35 HRs, you were 3rd on your own team in HRs!

Eddie_Dean

@sjm25 @josef Not exactly. A number of the guys on the team now will be getting raises next year. Notably Wright, Murphy, and Duda. They could add no one significant and still have almost the same payroll they have now, which is kind of scary....

josef
josef

@sjm25 @josef The owners are just cheap. A team in the biggest market in the world, should not be nickel and dimming it, like we are! I think we should extend Murphy And get 2 more bats; one for a corner outfield position, and the other for SS! Those cheap MoFos could afford to increase the payroll to be competitive and relevant again! With the pitching we potentially have, 2 more bats will make a huge difference and most likely take us to the post-season and beyond, in a year or two

rico
rico

@thecasuaLGM @hubie_wc teams put many of their players through waivers to gauge interest.  Doesn't mean he gets traded but they know full well who would be interested.  No waivers at all is surprising.

hubie_wc

$$$$$$. We need to try to bring in a hitter better than Grandy this off season.

thecasuaLGM
thecasuaLGM

@josef @sjm25 They had to follow payroll limits as stipulated in their loan agreements. those restrictions are not in place next year. please have a clue before commenting

@hubie_wc you don't know the mets budget so no use trying to do imaginary math for them. not to mention dumping valuable players

@borsh13 were getting back to the days of Kingman and Mike Schmidt

josef
josef

@borsh13 That is why the biggest commodity in baseball now is young arms that can throw hard in mid 90s or higher, To win now, everyone knows they need a great pen with 6 or 7 young hard throwing arms, so when your starter comes out in 6th or 7th inning, you can still throw starter-like arms out there that can throw heat for the remainder of the game! Value of young pitching is at all time highs! To win though, in addition to this type of pitching, you need 4 or 5 solid hitters who could deliver under pressure and in key situations in games, which we don't have yet!! Hopefully, Travis D, Duda, and Murph could be 3 of those guys, but we need 2 more!

Frank Accardi
Frank Accardi

Stop who's this Jeff Wilpon... the mets refinanced they have no loan stipulation ..spend money there full of sh-.t

Saul is already complaining about putting money in the team

thecasuaLGM
thecasuaLGM

@sjm25 and you realize lagares would have around that many XBHs too if he  had another 220 ABs

rico
rico

@thecasuaLGM @hubie_wc Grandy and Neise already cleared waivers. If the mets want to trade Colon or off his salary you'd think they would have run him through too.

hubie_wc
hubie_wc

Do you really think the budget will increase? Colon is 43. Trade him while you can even if only to free up the $$$.

Max Denby
Max Denby

Wrong. Highest value are young power BATS, for exactly the reason stated. There is so little power now it's value is super high.

thecasuaLGM
thecasuaLGM

@josef @thecasuaLGM @sjm25 I can only speak for what they have done the past few years. years that include 140 million dollar payrolls. they seem to spend when they have money

rico
rico

@hubie_wc Yes I think if the Mets need to spend more this off season they will.  They are not going to drop half a billion like the Yankees (who you may notice are not doing much better than us, even after throwing money at EVERYBODY).  But yeah I think the METS would expand the payroll, and there is no need to do math as if they had a salary cap.

josef
josef

@borsh13 But, I am afraid Grandy won't be much better than 2014 version, and Wright at his best is a very good player, but he is not elite! If Wright gets back to near his career averages, with the addition of the 2 bats, even with the same old Grandy, we should be fine!

josef
josef

@borsh13 Exactly! You need the ability to win a bunch of 2-1, 3-2, and 4-3 games. We definitely have the pitching and then some, but 2 above average bats are needed, and as we both have said, a SS and a corner outfielder who are  slightly above league-average will do!

josef
josef

@thecasuaLGM @josef @sjm25 True! They just need to spend wisely going forward, but nowadays the free agency doesn't offer as much talent as it used to, or it does it at unreasonable prices! Hopefully they can pull off a couple of good trades, while making some reasonable signings!

thecasuaLGM
thecasuaLGM

@sjm25 @thecasuaLGM I am just saying that with 220 extra ABs the numbers suggest that lagares would be in the 35 (+/-) XBH range now and who can accrue 30+ 2B a year as he further develops as a hitter and an athlete. Murphy is somewhat of a slap hitter too who occasionally gets a hold of one so I think there are more similarities between the two than you are willing to concede.

hubie_wc
hubie_wc

I don't see it going above 90 mln. Colon's 11 mln is going to be needed.
