Need to Know: Jon Niese made his second straight quality start, allowing three runs in six innings and picking up his seventh win. The Mets managed just four hits but posted a pair of big innings — scoring three in the second and four in the sixth. Travis d’Arnaud and Matt den Dekker each scored two runs, and Juan Lagares and Wilmer Flores each drove in a pair of runs.
Cubs right-hander Dan Straily, making his team debut, allowed seven runs in 5 1/3 innings. Straily also hit David Wright with a pitch in the sixth inning, and the Mets third baseman left the game with a sore left shoulder.
Justin Ruggiano and Wellington Castillo each blasted solo homers for the Cubs.
Game ball: Niese pitched around two errors in the first inning, throwing 96 pitches and striking out six in six-plus innings.
What’s next: Rafael Montero (0-3, 6.12) will make his second straight start back in the bigs as the Mets will look to pick up their third win in a row Sunday afternoon at Citi Field at 1:10 p.m. The Cubs will counter with righty Jake Arrieta (6-4, 2.77).
