Game recap: Mets 7 – Cubs 3

Recap: The Mets claimed their second straight win, beating the Cubs 7-3 on Saturday at Citi Field.

MLB: Chicago Cubs at New York Mets

Need to Know: Jon Niese made his second straight quality start, allowing three runs in six innings and picking up his seventh win. The Mets managed just four hits but posted a pair of big innings — scoring three in the second and four in the sixth. Travis d’Arnaud and Matt den Dekker each scored two runs, and Juan Lagares and Wilmer Flores each drove in a pair of runs.

Cubs right-hander Dan Straily, making his team debut, allowed seven runs in 5 1/3 innings. Straily also hit David Wright with a pitch in the sixth inning, and the Mets third baseman left the game with a sore left shoulder.

Justin Ruggiano and Wellington Castillo each blasted solo homers for the Cubs.

Game ball: Niese pitched around two errors in the first inning, throwing 96 pitches and striking out six in six-plus innings.

In the proposed CUBS/METS trade below ( DW and Wheeler for Kris Bryant and Javier Baez) it is interesting to see how some Mets fans think the Mets are getting the short end of the stick--mainly because DW is included. The sentimental value outweighs rational baseball decision.A few posts said and agreed that the cubs would never do it believing the Cubs would be getting the short end of the stick. To those that think the Cubs would not do it --what else from the Mets do you think that the Cubs would want to in "even it out."

What was quality about 5 hits in 12 pitches? Are you  serious? Vic Black saved his hide. It was an awful outing.

Three earned runs in six innings is 4.50 ERA. There is nothing quality about 4.50. Let's not make Neise the second coming of Koosman. A look  at Jon's lifetime stats will show mediocrity.

Hard to believe but Flores is sitting out today's game according to TC... What do all the Nay Sayers feel about Wilmer's defense in the game? He handled it very well... And here's the stat that all should look at... Flores is 4 for 8 with a runner at 3rd base and less than 2 outs and getting the runner in!!! We have lacked that production all year and TC feels that he needs a day off... Hard to believe...

This kid the Cubbies have in AAA... Benson...Lets get em...Our future power corner outfielder...

We would have won by more ....if we had a good manager!!! If he would have moved Flores up in the order, he wouod have had at least 3 more RBIs. Flores MASHED and RAKED in the minors...but old man Collins can't see past his corncob nose...that geezer!! If we had Wally we would be in 1st place with a ring by now!! #fireterry

So tomorrow, Wilmer plays 3B and bats 8th, and Tejada plays SS and bats 2nd, right Terry? It's actually insulting that nobody retaliated for DW being plunked. Again.

Game ball to Niese? Really? I'd give it to Black who came in with the bases loaded and no outs to clean up Niese's mess.

Rizzo had better get beaned tomorrow.

The mets are not trading wheeler Harvey Thor or degrom. Come with trades that don't include them. They are probably not trading matz either. Gee Niese and montero are all trade bait

As a Met fan would you do this?

Cubs trade 3B Kris Bryant and Javier Baez to Mets for DW & Wheeler?

Cubs can absorb DW's $100 million remaining contract freeing us up $20 million per year for another stud in LF.

Baez and Bryant are 3B and SS for next 6 years before free agency.

Bryant rated by most as the #1 prospsect in MLB. 40 HRS this year. 6'5  215l bs power hitter.

http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=sa549381&position=3B

Hate to give up Wheeler but getting a power hitter that is young and  MLB minimum $$$ today is harder than finding good pitching.

Cubs prospect Kris Bryant is generally considered a top-two prospect in baseball, as most outlets that do midseason prospect rankings had him and Byron Buxton 1-2 in some order. He's also leading all professional baseball players with 40 homers this regular season. He had 22 bombs in 68 Double-A games before his promotion to Triple-A and Thursday night hit his 18th homer with Iowa, in his 54th Triple-A game.

In 158 career minor-league games since being drafted second overall in 2013, Bryant is hitting .336/.431/.685 with 47 doubles, 49 homers and 135 RBI. Oh, and 16 stolen bases in 19 attempts, too. He's currently playing third base, though many believe he'll be shifted to a corner outfield spot down the road.

As a Met fan would you do this?

Anyone notice that Campbell's three run game winning homer yesterday promptly got him a seat on the bench today? FIRE TERRY!

I don't get where Cerrone says Niese should get the game ball. You don't reward gutless players for not protecting Wright. Instead of drilling the first Cub up after Wright got hit, Niese gives up a homer on a silver platter. Baseball played like that is a reflection on Collins. Worthless.

To get to 90 wins, all we have to do is go 31-7 the rest of the way (and play the Cubs and Phillies 19 times each).

Just watching Papi hit a home run on the right field at Fenway. Man I think Wright would mash at Fenway and in that division with the likes of Toronto and Yankee stadiums.

Anyone watching Vic Black post game. Something along the lines of: Terry told me to get a ground ball and I'm like well that's a double play and a run scores. I want no damage. TC is the worst!

The last time any NL team scored as many as 7 runs on four or fewer hits was more than 10 years ago: April 22, 2003, when the Cubs scored 7 against the Padres on four hits, 7 walks and 3 HBPs.

Positive we won, negative no starter has yet to sniff over 6 innings in this series especially against the aweful cubs team smh sad if you ask me especially with the Dodgers and A's coming up

@cleonsvan I wouldn't say awful as whole. it did end very sourly before that inning, but Niese was pitching well until the 7th.

Dana Smith

@Ed Renner Who said he's the second Jerry Koosman? Yes, Jon has been a .500 pitcher with the baseball average ERA. He's what, 27? Clearly not at top strength. He will never be an elite pitcher, but a consistent middle rotation guy is very feasible

Rudibager
Rudibager

@Ed Renner 3 runs in 6 innings IS a quality start.  Nobody is making him out to be anything more than he is.  But to say that's not a quality start is laughable.

David Wright is one of the top 5 position players the Mets have ever produced.

I never want him traded. He is worth more to the a Mets than to anyone else. Trading him makes no sense. Just build around him.

Sounds good but don't think the Cubs make that move without a lot more coming there way plus not sure if they would want Wrights contract, they could add alot of value with $20 mill per and still keep there 2 top prospects, if DW was having a great year you might get a nibble if you threw in a couple of more pieces but not like this

Dana Smith

@rock44 Against a lefty. He's already mentioned numerous times that he is playing den Dekker against RHP. For all of the reasons they could can Terry Collins, let's fire him because they sat Campbell...

Who are you going to set? Well I would've sat Grandy

@metspete Niese comes inside on plenty of batters. It's clear he did not have it in 7th inning. Give the guy a break. Although I would agree Niese should not get the "game ball". I'd say Black gets it.

They could play the 5th best college team in the country and I don't even think they'd be projected to go 31-7

@baldy . . . Too bad we are not playing the Yankees. We do good against them and they are not getting it done right now.

@Chris Weber Because you get out of the inning quicker... you have a 4 run lead. You trade a run for two outs...basic baseball.

@ponzies86 Wheeler went 6 and two thirds. He was just 1 out away from completing 7. Wheeler's start was much better than Niese's start.

@Dana Smith @Ed Renner Totally agree. Mid level guy. The frustrating part is that he has the talent...if he could control his temper.

Koo but you fail to realize he was at 90 pitches thru 5. That's alarming when its against this free swinging cubs lineup
