Game Recap: Mets 5 – Pirates 0

Result: The Mets beat the Pirates 5-0 on Wednesday afternoon to win the game and the series.

Need to Know: Bartolo Colon notched career strikeout No. 2000, striking out nine Pirates over 7 1/3 innings. He allowed five hits and walked just one. Jeurys Familia needed one pitch to induce a double play from Ike Davis in the 8th inning and stayed in to complete the five-out save. David Wright and Lucas Duda both homered, Duda’s a two-run shot in the eighth inning and Wright’s a solo shot in the sixth. Wright also hit an RBI single to drive in Daniel Murphy in the third. Duda also scored on a wild pitch in the second inning. The Pirates and Mets combined for four errors.

Game Ball: Colon, who was locked in all game. He threw 121 pitches and looked like he was on cruise control for the majority of his time on the mound.

Chris Young has gotta go. Let den Dekker and Campbell split LF with EY on the shelf, cut ties with CY. He just looks so lost at the plate right now, and is a liability in the order.

I realize the Dodgers have money but they just shelled out a hefty contract to Kershaw,  they are going to be stuck with a large portion of Kemp's contract even if they get someone to trade for him,  so my point is this-- If the Dodgers know they are not going to open the bank for Hanley Ramirez this winter when he becomes a free agent, i would think they would rather trade him and get a return on him than let him go for nothing.  He is the type of player the Yankees would outbid everyone in the free agent market, and so the Dodgers may not want to get in a costly bidding duel.
I would take Hanley in a heart beat IF(and again its a big IF) the Dodgers will be looking to move him..  not sure what the price would be but i gather it can't be that high being he is a fa in the winter.  Of course the Mets would want to do a sign and trade before they traded for him.

Thoughts?????

I wish the Mets would pay me $7.2 mill to strike out. I can guarantee I will do it every time, so everyone knows what to expect.

I loved watching Lolich 2.0 pitch today.  He was fantastic.  Such movement on his pitches, with great control.  And a hat-tip to Ike for helping us out.

The stink of that weasel Hudgens is going away  Had balls to criticize Keith and Darling who only reported what they saw    Club is better off without him He is a whining loser

Honestly what is the point of keeping CY around anymore? The dude is awful, and is going to be paid 7.25 mil weather he plays or ride the bench. Just release him and move on.

I know we won 2 in a row and all and i don't want to sound like a jerk, but if Alderson is serious about wanting this team to win 90 games this year, he needs to get us at minimum a left fielder who can hit and do so like tonight!

Two solid bats would probably keep them in the race in this weak division, but that ain't happening. If there was one bat you think would be available, who would it be, and who would you give up?

Happy with the win but please for the love of god stop batting granderson young and duda in succession, I have trained myself to go run errands that inning because its a guaranteed hitless one. I'm starting to think we need to separate murphy and wright so this way they aren't always on first and second with one out and we don't get a run scored. But then again unfortunately we have no alternative lol

NEED TO KNOW: Ike Davis Sucked a Big Fat Goose Egg. 0-4.

If colon can pitch like this or close to it in 3 of his next 4 or 5 starts then we may have a trade chip on our hands

The game today was fun to watch. Congratulations to Colon for reaching 2,000 strike outs with very good overall pitching, The guys actually looked like they had fun out there too. I would like to see more of the swagger seen today continue. . .Lets Go Mets!

personally, i love that Colon pitched on Dinosaur Appreciation Day. very very good job on having that happen.

How bad is Young, talk about making a balls up constantly, get him the hell away from the starting line-up.......after a big of a nightmare May they are still only 4.5 games out of first, O if we only had one more player who could hit .280 and for HRs, this team could win this division if the front office would just spend some cash and make a trade

David wright, batting 300, 29 rbis, gold glove caliber defense. Guys horrible

Bitch all you want, the Mets pitching is looking pretty nasty lately and now even pen, now that Meija, Familia and Black are locked in.

Today and yesterday Duda came through and Ike did not. I'd like a star 1st baseman and Yasiel Puig in the outfield too but maybe later, or next year.  I'm guessing Neise or Gee will be packaged for a 1st baseman or a hitting SS.

Mets are in the cellar but you can see the light,

Here we go.  The little 2 game win streak.  They like to throw these in every once in a while to give us some false hope.

wright is our problem?  please stop that stuff.  we know our problem is the WILPONS and the ridiculous 80 million dollar budget.

you need to spend money to make money.  this team should be 120-140 and then fans would come out because we would have a everyday shortstop and left fielder.  we could of won the cuban sweepstakes for first as well.

the Wilpons are the problem.  that won't be changing obvioulsy.

I'm going with the 7 line on saturday to the game and I'm actually excited now (Degrom is pitching, hopefully he'll get his first win).. let the lamar era begin!

So since Wright's HR came in the 6th and the Mets were already up 2-0, it wasn't considered clutch, right?

@George Komninakis You think the Mets fans booing Granderson is a big deal, imagine if Hanley comes here? He is known for not give 100% every time out. He is a good player, but with someone like him, he's already peaked and his career will only trend downward. Don't we have enough of those types of players? We need a young, controllable shortstop. He doesnt need to be an allstar, just someone who is strong defensively and isnt a liability with the bat, with a winning, tough mental attitude. I wouldnt complain if we got Hanley, but only if it fell into our laps. Not going to happen then. Would prefer to go after a Jed Lowrie? Chris Owings?

George Komninakis
George Komninakis

@Angelo Castelli Kemp or Ethier can be had.  Melky Cabrera can be had..  If the Dodgers do not want to pay Hanley Ramirez next yr, they would trade him instead of just sit back and lose him for nothing in the winter.

Who would i give up?  Not much for any of them except Hanley.

Dana Smith
Dana Smith

@Dave D'Agnese Thats funny, Duda had a pretty nice hit today. Wright And Murphy are not moving from those spots in the order. They just hit Duda behind Granderson instead of being worried about the L/R split in the lineup.

cmetsfan
cmetsfan

@Dave D'Agnese When they actually try they should be fine. At this rate, Duda could be tradeable(as in other teams want him) by a week or two, and the mets can decide if they prefer Flores at first.

...You might have to fire somebody every week though

Chris Young's swing looks interesting. Maybe if he starts letting go with one hand he could take the ball the other way sometimes.

Dana Smith
Dana Smith

@Victor Triguero Perfect? What? I mean, yeah they won, but the Pirates have their own issues right now, and Id hardly say things have taken a 180. Chris Young looks terrible. Granderson is streaky. The bottom of the order is still extremely weak. Plus, what was with all the low throws and bad scoops today? Still a lot of work to do...

cmetsfan
cmetsfan

@Mike DeRosa You'll never convince his fans he wasn't the franchise. Just a waste of energy.

@Alec Wilson They have the trade chips and maybe, hopefully d Arnaud, Tejada, Duda, Youngs will find their stroke

Eric Carlos Torres

@rico I don't see why you guys keep bringing up Niese as a potential trade piece. He's probably the only untouchable pitcher in my opinion. Only lefty in our staff and we have none coming up from the Minors.

@rico pen will be better by the subtraction. love the young power arms and Mejia's nasty stuff.  this will work much better.

Mets need a SS above all. Duda may be fine afterall.

jenkins
jenkins

@rico Mets will have one of the top pitching staffs in the league by next year. They'll be great top to bottom.

But yes, they'll need a SS and RBI OF and maybe a catcher. I also wouldn't be surprised to see them trade Murphy-who would be a great DH. Or see if Alderson has some intel on if the NL goes to a DH (spits.)

@nagel100 where does Sandy keep getting his payroll numbers from? I he counting every single employee that works for the Mets organization in that?

zoddie
zoddie

@C.K. Dexter Haven  Exactly.  We should continue to hate on one of the best hitters in franchise history.  We all know that a 2-0 lead for this team is a done deal, anyway.

rico
rico

@jenkins @rico yep, and Murphy's stock is rising so it may be a good time to see what we can get for him. I know Sandy entertained offers for Murph over the summer but didn't care for the offers.

We'll see. Murphy is one of the legit baseball players on the team with Wright, Grandy and maybe Legares.  We need more of those

Marc Singleton
Marc Singleton

@Steven Matregrano @Marc Singleton Based on history, I don't see Sandy making a trade for an impact bat.   Hey! I hope I'm wrong though!

That said, a Mike Pizza like trade would be awesome.  I don't know who that player would be, but its what this team and fan base desperately needs!

@Steven Matregrano @Marc Singleton

I thought we'd start winning when we played that terrible Arizona team last week. But that didn't happen.  Maybe the next few days will be good, maybe not.  The life of a close to .500 team.

hankincolo

@zoddie @C.K. Dexter Haven "Hate on"? oh you wacky young kids. Just because the talking heads on ESPN use that slang phrase to make them sound hip or cool, doesn't make the word "hate" any more meaningful.

Alec Wilson
Alec Wilson

@Marc Singleton @rico @Alec Wilson  I honestly think you could accept Duda if you had a big consistant bat in front of him as for the SS it's been a mess for ages and the Mets have been like Nero and fiddled while Rome burns

Dana Smith
Dana Smith

@jenkins @rico You guys whine way too much about Murphy's defense. If they dont keep him, you guys will be begging for Murphy back.

jenkins
jenkins

@rico @jenkins He's an excellent hitter, so if the NL went to a DH I would never trade him. But the only place he can play defensively is 1B.

If we're going to be a pitching team, we can't have Murphy at 2B or Flores at SS. They give up too many extra outs.

jenkins
jenkins

@Steven Matregrano no, that is not clutch hitting. It's not even timely hitting.

It's good hitting. Most HRs not in the Bronx usually are.
