Game recap: Mets 4, Giants 2

Result: The Mets’ bats were quiet early, but exploded in a four-run seventh inning to even their series with the Giants in a 4-2 win.

MLB: San Francisco Giants at New York Mets

Need to Know: Jacob deGrom was perfect through 4 2/3 innings and didn’t allow a hit until there were two outs in the seventh, while Giants starter Jake Peavy didn’t allow a baserunner over the first 6 1/3 innings. After Mike Morse misplayed a Daniel Murphy fly ball for the Mets’ first hit of the game in the seventh, four of the next five batters reached base with the only out coming on a Travis d’Arnaud sacrifice fly. The Mets plated four in the inning before giving two back in the top of the eighth, but Jeurys Familia and Jenrry Mejia closed out the win.

Game Ball: deGrom, who won his fifth consecutive start and recorded an out in the eighth inning for the first time in his career.

What’s Next: The Mets will send Bartolo Colon (10-8, 3.88) to the mound on Sunday at 1:10 p.m., facing off against Giants ace Madison Bumgarner (12-8, 3.41). Colon has allowed just three runs over 15 innings in his past two starts, while Bumgarner is coming off his worst start of the season (4 innings, 5 runs).

deGrom is a keeper ! Any body read in the NY Post that Terry Collins believes In Chris Young and likes the way he's swinging the bat . Are you freaking kidding me ?

That was probably one of the most exciting games I've watched in a long time.  The pitching duel was just great.  I'm very impressed with deGrom.  He is certainly making a case for earning a spot in the rotation next year.

If The Dodgers claim Colon they will work out a deal with NY. IF THE Giants claim Colon they probably will not offer up a player as it's unlikely the Mets would pull back the waiver

Can the Dodgers be looking at Colon in a waiver deal?

Degrom is De Bomb! Wow he has electric stuff.........Mets have a great young pitching staff. Familla and Mejia have been lights out. We are one manager (Wally) and one big bat in LF away from being an elite team.

Regarding SS - have Flores start and Tejada play the 8th & 9th.

LGM!

You folks on the Tejada Jihada bandwagon are absolutely batsh!t. You want to ignore Flores' fielding % (tied w Tejada) based on small sample size, but then cite another small sample size about his offense and conclude he can't hit. ~Durrrrrrrrr~

Superlag to the rescue, what a play man seriously. deGrom, the apple of my eye right about now. Imagine him Harv, Wheeler, Montero and Thor. Brrrr, I just shuddered at the thought, i mean thats all studs right there, all pitching studs. Harv and deGrom are damn near interchangeable, and throw in Wheeler too. Boy oh boy, our squad has some pitching for some yrs to come. The Mets need to go with a 6 man rotation to keep him in for the entire yr. Just get us a heavy hitting left fielder and a .300 hitting shortstop with a .350 obp, and we're off to the races man.

Future looks real bright with these young power arms.

Now don't get stupid. With young power arms, playing in this ball park, throw Lagares out there every day to chase down balls in the gaps. The pitchers would probably pony up to pay his salary.

Worst case he's your 8 hitter. Who cares, you can live with that in this ballpark the way he plays CF.

Hey, you know what's funny? The three pitchers that pitched tonight? Yeah, all drafted/signed by San--OMAR!

I'm half serious here. But, hey -- Omar's bright spots and Sandy's cautious management have done us VERY well.

Play Flores Sunday and the rest of the season at SS Terry, tell him he is your starting short stop from this point on....no reason to keep starting Tejada (let tejada take over as the backup SS/2b where he will be at best next year).

deGrom is untouchable.

Another Homer for Matt Kemp tonight...3 in his last 5 games

Hitting .320 in June and July

I'm starting to be a  believer in Kemp again

the young pitching makes this team watchable again.  While they may not end up with a much better record than the last few years, at least now its fun to see the guys like wheeler and degrom pitching instead of the pelfreys of the world

This team could win a World Series, and half of you would complain they did it in six games instead of five. If you don't see the improvement, you're blind.

Did you all see Wilmer turn on that pitch?!?  Fast hands on the kid.  Great hitting instinct.  deGrom is marvelous.  Lagares amazing D.

cleonsvan

@Chad Michael  I agree. Great and suspenseful game. After deGrom, Flores was the hero. That pick up of Mejia's throw was key. Once again, Wilmer shows smooth hands. He might never be a good SS, but he has shown to be reliable in making all the necessary plays and can easily be a back-up.

matmil

@elcondor I would think thats a no brainer but what are they willing to give up. Sandy is gonna want some serious payback for him and I don't blame him. They have L.A. over a barrel

matmil

@bigslick I don't know about being an elite team but that would make them a playoff contender. to get to being an elite team they would need a new shortstop, leftfielder and leadoff hitter. Sounds like Reyes would fit perfectly. Letting him go is now gonna haunt them.

matmil

@Muhammad Qureshi You've got to have a least one lefty starter and 2 is what the better teams always have.

illnagas

I think his batting is fine. He's hitting what .270-.280? On this team, that's fine.

matmil

@borsh13 TC nd Alderson keep saying that they are trying to win but they are not putting the best lineup out there. They keep playing CY and running Flores out there at short looks to me like they are showcasing them as trade bait. I don't like Tejada but he certainly has a better glove than Flores and Flores isn't exactly hitting the cover off the ball.

illnagas

But why would sandy and terry, in their infinite wisdom, not see what you see, oh master?

Tarheel11
Tarheel11

@borsh13 I agree with you about all of the Flores talk. And I was on record as saying Flores is not a SS. However, haven't we seen enough of Ruben Tejada to know he's not the answer either?

grillruben
grillruben

@Robert Marcoux

You don't get it. No one is saying Flores is a sure thing star. He can very easily turn out to never be a good player. We have simply seen enough of Tejada to know he is 100000000% NOT the answer. So why trot out a guy that is destined to be gone, who offers little value, when we can use this rebuilding season to see if Flores playing every day can be a long term thing.

@Michael Portanova ok, I got halfway thru that ridiculous article abd I had to stop reading it. Abd I'm a Wilmer supporter! He's been five years younger than the competition? Come on now, is someone in charge of chicking this out it are we all just supposed to accept this "fact"?. Then there was the "over the last 162 games played" crap...ugggh. Those games were interrupted by major league games...The ones that count! And he's been so-so so far...so to speak. I didn't even read the part about his fielding because I can see for myself how he fields and he's been ok as a fielder. Nothing great but nothing special either.

So should he start at SS the rest of the year? I say yes...as in he should've started yesterday, today, and tomorrow as far as I'm concerned. But let's not proclaim him anything more than he is right now. And what he is is so far is...OK (by me)

Michael Portanova
Michael Portanova

Also not to take attention from deGrom. Unbelievable again, please do not trade him... please..

nym68
nym68

@Eric Koeller Have you ever heard of a player playing like wild fire in order to prove his worth to another team? If not, then meet Mr. Kemp. His goal is to force a trade out of L.A. as fast as possible because he knows the organization had lost faith in him. I would not put a lot of stock in his play the rest if the year. Right now he's motivated, but he doesn't always play this way

Robert Marcoux
Robert Marcoux

@Eric Koeller I'm happy for him.  He is guarunteed 21 million a year til 2019.  He's got some work ahead of him.

wingo43

@JC I think there's a good chance we can finish at or slightly above .500.   81-83 wins?

@Kelly Jean Or they would complain that they were drinking Budweiser in the post game celebration rather than Heinken (or insert good beer)

Doubleday

Terry will sit Wilmer tomorrow and say, "He only had one hit, and it wasn't like he got a hit off Drysdale.  Meanwhile, I have this other kid who is really hitting the ball good lately.  Got to keep him in there."

elcondor

Wonder if the Giants would block by putting a claim in right in front of L.A.?

matmil

@grillruben @Robert Marcoux I think if Tejada would learn to choke up, shorten the swing and make more contact he might turn into a decent number 2 hitter. But he shows no evidence of trying to do it and doesn;t really have good baseball instincts.i

Robert Marcoux
Robert Marcoux

@grillruben @Robert Marcoux It was joke… I really don't care who plays ss. just as long as they punish the nats the rest of the way.  ok???

Michael Portanova
Michael Portanova

Alright so if he plays ok defense and you give him time to develop into the hitter scouts think he can be then we have a cheap option at short instead of overpaying for tulo or hanley

cleonsvan
cleonsvan

@nym68 @Michael Portanova  You don't think holding your own as a 17 year old in a 22 year old league means something? He is now 22 the same age as those kids but he is in the majors. He needs time to develop. He will become a good hitter.

@matmil @grillruben @Robert Marcoux Huh??? What you described is exactly what Ruben Tejada is. A punch and judy contact hitter with little power and with an OBP almost good enough to be a #2 hitter.

grillruben
grillruben

@Robert Marcoux

I didn't think you seriously meant trade him for Trout. But ultimately you seem to think Tejada should be playing and you are wrong.

Robert Marcoux
Robert Marcoux

@grillruben @Robert Marcoux I don't care enough about either one of them to be honest.  Rafael Santana was the starting ss for the mets in '86 and he was a total scrub.  Harrelson, Ordonez and Reyes are the only ss in 40 some years that are worth mentioning

@mets2death

He had what turned out to be the biggest hit of the night...and the winning RBI

I've followed Flores for entire career as many of you probably have and he is a hitter...and a very good one at that...CLUTCH
