Game Recap: Mets 4 – Cardinals 1

The Mets (12-10) defeated the Cardinals (12-11) by the score of 4-1 at Citi Field on Thursday >> Read a full AP recap and boxscore at SNY.TV.

Need to Know: Daisuke Matsuzaka locked down his first career save pitching a perfect ninth inning. … Bartolo Colon pitched seven innings, let up one run, four hits, walked no one and struck out eight. … Chris Young hit his first home run with the Mets, a second-decker to left field. … Curtis Granderson singled in a run as a pinch hitter … Daniel Murphy had two hits, including a double and two RBI. … The Mets took three of four games from the Cardinals during the series.

Reaction from Matthew Cerrone: Hey, it’s easy to be negative, it’s more difficult to believe. But, the fact is, for whatever reason, the Mets played really, really good baseball this series. They fielded well, they pitched well, they got timely hitting, tack on runs and the bullpen looked outstanding. These are the Cardinals. Are they damaged right now? Sure. But, wins are wins, and the Mets shouldn’t apologize for winning three of four from the defending National League Champions. … Now, what happens against the Marlins? Miami has looked better of late, as well. It would be terrible to let up against the division rival. This is going to be an important, tone-setting series. The Mets fought through a really difficult beginning to April. This sets up for a much more interesting May and June than I expected…

What’s Next: The Mets welcome the Marlins to Citi Field on Friday for the start of a three-game series, when Zack Wheeler (1-2, 4.63 ERA) takes on RHP Henderson Alvarez (1-2, 2.66 ERA) at 7:10 pm ET.

Pitching only going to get better with mid-season call-ups. The current group of relievers only needs to hold on half a season before relief is on the way.

Please no more Drew talk, the guy is terrible and overpriced. Rather stick with Tejada any day.

I thought only mistake this offseason was not getting in on Abreu (the young one), otherwise I like our team. Relying on young guys out of our system something we've been lacking for years. Guys like lagares, tda, tejada, Duda, Kirk etc are going to have to grow and progress if we ever have a chance with these debtor owners.

Excited about the season, looking forward to seeing these guys gel and build some great chemistry.

LGM

P.S. Love to see Wright playing on a competitive team, even If only April. The guy deserves to win and def. doesn't get enough credit for what he's done for the mets over the years. One of the greatest, if not THE best Met of all time.

I feel like the mets are 1 reliever away from being a division champ...and a joel hanrahan and they would be good....i would have EY or CY 1, Murphy 2, Wright 3, Duda 4, Granderson 5, Lagares 6, TDA 7, Tejada 8....if grandy duda and wright produce like they are supposed to and murphy plays like he did last year we should be in good shape...plus lagares looks good early

Is Alan Dykstra a candidate to be up in bigs this year? He seems like he can hit.

we have familia who hasnt thrown in how long? and then torres who terry is going to feliciano

Abreu looks like a plus, but only in small doses. I suspect if Kirk doesn't start hitting he'll be sent down and Brown will return because they'll need a righty pinch hitter.

Nice win. Nice series. If Wright and Brandy get going we could put together a nice stretch here with the Marlins and Phils on deck. This bullpen is a ticking time though. TC goes to the pen way too early, and way to often.

A good win today it looks like things are looking up in many ways and hope it continues to end of month; good pitching, good relief and timely hitting.....what could be better?

I hope Terry gives Torres a break. He's pitched 4 of the last 5 games. Terry's going to blow Torres' arm off...Geezz

Really nice win. Again, the pitching has beeb phenomenal. Although they got 4 runs, the hittig was still lacking. They had runners on with no outs and they couldnt brimg em in. Hopefully, they can build on the hitting from this game. Power from CY was great! If grandy can be somewhat like he's been in recent years, you'd think maybe him, Murph, Wright, legares, Duda and CY should be able to score a decent amount of runs. Lets hope this happens.

There appears to be two totally different groups of people that post when the Mets win vs. when they lose. Interesting..............

The team plays with spirit and grit. Hats off to TC for the positive vibes coming out of the clubhouse.

"Reaction from Matthew Cerrone" lol this guy sites himself in his own articles. Priceless!

Today is just a reminder that our Metsies tend to play better against the top tier teams and not so much against the bottom rung. I like what I am seeing lately, could be an interesting season. Lets Go Mets!

Doubleday

The HR CY hit was a bomb; The way Abreu turned on that ball he doubled down the line should alleviate any fears about his ability to still hit at this level (Though he was huffing when he landed at second base!); Bartolo and Dice-K were outstanding; Attaboy, Curtis.  TODAY, this team was interesting.

For a guy batting .214, EY seems to be part of every play.  I don't think traditional stats account for his impact on this ballclub.

@Chris O'Neill  Agree with a lot what you say, but Tom Seaver is the greatest Metropolitan of all time - not even close. Wright is a border line hall-of-famer. Seaver was a first-ballot hall-of-famer, elected with the highest percentage of voter ballots ever. Perhaps you're thinking greatest position player of all time - there you could be correct.

@philj  that's very optimistic. We may be 1 reliever away from 80 wins. EYJ stinks don't be fooled. I'm not a Tejada basher like 99% of fans, but we don't have a major league caliber starting SS. Duda is a major question mark. TDA is a question mark.

@David Marcus  wouldnt mind sending down kirk for him, but lagares will be back next week

Familia can't throw strikes you can't bring him in a close game

Anthony Giammattei

@hankincolo I agree, but not with small doses.  If he hit's, why not use him like we did with Byrd last year.  It just doesn't make sense watching the Met's hitters strike out over and over again, with Bobby Abreu sitting on the bench.

When is te 8th inning too early? News flash, it aint the 70s anymore

@dreamer3kx  this is pretty much the design. score 4 and win. They are built to win low scoring games with pitching and defense. they are not gifted hitters, which is why they must rely on walks and make the most of chances.

@openmind6  157 comments after a nice 3/4 game victory to take the series against the cards. It really is pathetic that when we lose there are 300+ comments all about negative crap. But when they win, you can hear a mouse fart in here. Im proud of this team so far... Didn't expect much this season but I hope they keep rolling.

@openmind6 Yup when the Mets win the real fans are here.  When the Mets lose the Ones that live in their moms basement post here for the rest of the day.  LOL

No doubt. The haters come out of the woodwork when it's safe and enjoy a feeding frenzy, usually revealing their lack of knowledge about baseball in the process. There's a big difference between them and the rest of us. We share a fan's frustration with how the team has declined. They just simply vent their personal issues.

@doubleday  He didn't turn on it!! It was opposite field!! Having said that, he's better then Kirk, Brown, and probably EYJ so I'm fine with him on roster.

Eric Notkin
Eric Notkin

@doubleday He may be someone like prime Michael Vick in that his numbers aren't great, but his style of play throws off defenses. Either that or it's a combination of luck and secondary skill.

Chris O'Neill

Way overrated for the amount of press and comments he gets. Played in hitters park in AZ and great lineup/green monster in BOS. He would be absolutely horrid in Citi. Same numbers as Tejada, for 10x the cost.

Agreed...I correct that to best position player.

@adam @philj  Agree with everything you said but TDA deserves a pass lets see what he brings as the months go by but Duda is no way in hell the long term solution on this team

hankincolo
hankincolo

He's 40. He's not an every day player. 2 to 3 days in a row. However, if he's hitting he's first man up in a pinch.

hankincolo

Yup, I stand corrected. Forgot about the young Juan.

adam

@Merrill Needham  I'm not talking about today genius. I'm talking overall. TC goes to the pen too quick. This is a fact. Theyve been in the bottom 5 in complete games 3 years in a row(Dead last actually), and in the Top 5 in both relief appearances and Innings pitched the last 3 years. If you think this pen is going to hold up you're delusional.

Ed Yano
Ed Yano

In the 10 Met loses the pitching has given up 5 or more runs 6 times, that makes 4 loses when the pitchers pitch like we hope they can.If the pitching is what we hope it is this team could surprise.
