Game Recap: Mets 11 – Phillies 2

Result: The Mets defeated the Philadelphia Phillies, 11-2, on Wednesday afternoon at Citi Field.

Need to Know: Zack Wheeler worked deep into counts, throwing 112 pitches in 6 2/3 innings but only allowing two runs in his sixth win of the season. Wheeler got the run support he needed when Daniel Murphy hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning to give the Mets the lead. They batted around in a five-run seventh to blow the game open. Even Jeurys Familia had an RBI single. Lucas Duda added a long two-run homer into the Pepsi Porch in the eighth inning. Duda now has five homers in his last eight games.

Game Ball: Murphy, who went 3-for-5 with a three-run homer that put the Mets ahead for good.

What’s Next: After a day off, the Mets will send Jon Niese (5-6, 3.23) to the mound for the first of a four-game series against San Francisco. The Giants will counter with Ryan Vogelsong (5-8, 3.94).

Look forward to listening to WIP over the Internet tonight -- I'm sure callers will have lots of interesting things to say about losing two of three to a sub-.500 team by a combined score of 18-4, with nothing really cooking at the trade deadline for Hamels, Lee, Howard etc.

That's great. I'll get excited when the Mets put together a real win streak and move at least a few games above .500.  Until then, its that perpetual, all important game to "get the Mets within 3 games of .500".

Nice win today. I'd have traded that win if I could have seen Flores play. Who cares that Tejada had 3 hits. Who cares they are 14-7 over the last 21 games. Only thing that matters is watching our non SS play.

Tejada isn't great but I still don't think anyone on here (including Matt) has noticed that his OBP is .358....17 points better than Daniel Murphy

With Father Dooley as a fellow Met's fan we may have a shot at another miracle. Lol

Debating for a month if I should pick up Duda for my fantasy team, finally pulled the trigger 18 pts

When was the last time anyone made a three-team deal?

If Duda continues the season hitting well (not scorching; but decent)  maybe ends up with 24 and 86.

Would you sign him to a 3yr  18 million deal?  ($4 + $6 + $8)

Dear Lucas Duda,  I may have been wrong about you.  Keep it up.

Big two week stretch coming for the mets.  4 game sets vs the Giants and the Phils, and two three game sets vs the Nats.  Take 3/4 from both the Giants and Phils and then 4/6 from Washington, then you may be onto something...would put us two games over .500 and within striking distance of likely both the division and WC.  That's asking an awful lot though....LGM!

Makes my day to see the smelly Phils get crushed.  LGM!

@wackymets3 Way less than a half now. If they get tanked in this upcoming series, it's game over.

Yea, if Tejada keeps getting on base and they keep winning, he may never play!

Better than having paid $10M for Stephen Drew, which so many posters here wanted to do.

Here's a funny stat the guys on SNY were talking about. Only one other person in the league has more intentional walks than Tejada...Stanton. How funny is that they walk Ruben almost as much as Stanton....now I know it's to get to the pitcher ....but still.

Duda has more fantasy points this week than Cargo has had in any week since week 6. Oh, and he's sitting out again tonight. That guy is softer than any player in the league

@Doubleday The Trumbo deal last year with D-Backs, Angels White Sox

@fourwedges Not right away, if he backs up this year with a solid next year....I would think about it.

@uga_met I hate the nationals. So many heartbreaking losses against them in the last two years. Parnell featured in a lot of them too. I hope we clobber them.

@uga_met Agree this a super important stretch.  It would go a LONG way if Sandy pulled off a trade for a bat. Show a faith in the ball club.

It is asking a lot but that's the position the mets put themselves in....but while it may be a lot to ask for it is not unrealistic....if they really want it they will have a chance

@TheDuke189 If Tejada sucked as badly as people say he does around here, then the opposing pitcher would just pitch to him and then go after the pitcher.

@kefhrny17 His OBP is his OBP....don't blame his placement in order, that's not in his control

@Jim Steele @Doubleday I have no problem admitting I was wrong, if it benefits the Mets.

@imjimmybx I knew Wright was going to be on the decline at a point when we will be ready to win.  Bad signing.   The only reason the Wilponzis did it was because they thought that Captain America was going to put fannies in the seats.

Ooops.

@sjm25   You just don't get it.  Maybe it's because the mets pitching staff is historically bad at hitting baseballs?   Colon, Niese and Wheeler are a combined 5 for 102 at the plate this year.  They are AUTOMATIC outs.  That's why he's walked more often than the "typical" #8 hitter.  Who's the idiot now?

smanj
smanj

@kefhrny17 Its not "blame", its a fact....many managers intentionally walk the 8th place hitter no matter what kind of hitter he is when there are two outs, baserunners and 1st base is open..fact, plan and simple...if you think would have 10 IBBs this year batting 6th, your crazy

illnagas

You can't give him too much credit for an intentional walk

@fourwedges   Gotcha..it's funny i was thinking about the contract thing too.  And then I remembered that he's 29 and the Mets have Dominic Smith working his way through the farm.  If Sandy's going to do it, do it now.   Arbitration this year Duda's got a good chance of winning

TheDuke189
TheDuke189

@matmil The only thing that would make me happier is if the Phils traded Rollins, Utley and Hamels to some West Coast American League team.....

dtc942
dtc942

@smanj You know what's a fact?  His OBP is .358 - that's a fact.  You thinking that he should have less IBB is not a fact.  I'll concede he has more than he'd have elsewhere in the order, but guess what, if he was batting elsewhere, he'd see better pitches to hit as well.

the point is that, while he's not good, he's not as bad as you make him seem.   batting average is a not a particularly yardstick, the smart people on here will realize that.   yet that's all everyone keeps saying.

Do we need an upgrade at SS?  yes.  Is he the only problem in the mets' lineup?  No.   Wright is having the worst year of his career, Lagares' OPS is only 48 points better than Tejada's (and he's a CF), and granderson has been beyond streaky.   The mets offensive problems are greater than ruben tejada.

wingo43
wingo43

@smanj Tejada would have better pitches to hit if he hit elsewhere in the lineup.

Yep, you right.
