Game Recap: Marlins 1, Mets 0

The Mets lost to the Marlins by the score of 1-0 in Miami on Wednesday afternoon >> Read a full AP recap and boxscore at SNY.TV

The game ended on a sac-fly to Juan Lagares, who made a weak and wide  throw to home. The throw stayed down, Anthony Recker did everything he could to make it work, but he couldn’t turn quick enough and the ball trickled behind him, as Giancarlo Stanton slide home for the winning run. Stanton made the play closer than it should’ve been by having to go back and tag up at third base.

This is Miami’s seventh walk-off win against the Mets in their last 22 games in Marlins Park.

Zack Wheeler pitched six scoreless innings, while striking out seven. He now has a 4.35 ERA. Wheeler pitched with two runners on and no outs in the sixth inning, but kept his cool and got Stanton to ground out in to a 6-4-3 double play.

Marlins RHP Tom Koehler lowered his ERA to 1.99 by throwing eight scoreless innings, during which the Mets got just two hits.

The Mets had only three at bats with runners in scoring position. They have not scored a run in 23 innings.

The Mets left Citi Field last week 16-12. They went 2-6 through Colorado and Miami and drop to one game below .500.

The Mets are off Thursday. They head home Friday to begin a three-game series against the Phillies. Jenrry Mejia (3-0, 5.23 ERA) opposes Roberto Hernandez (2-1, 4.50 ERA) at 7:10 pm ET.

Another tremendous offensive onslaught by the Mets. I've been following them since 1962 and nothing ever seems to change.

It was a great game and we came up short, it's going to happen! Chin Up, who have thought we would be 1 Game under 500, Despite Terry! Let's Go Mets!

The Mets have played 4,225 games since their last World Series, and what do they have to show for it?

- 2 division titles (that's one per 2,122.5 games played)
-1 World Series loss

And you wonder why some Met fans (me included) are furious, and sick of "wait till next year", "just hold on till all these great young arms mature"
Half the teams in the MLB have great young arms, including the Braves, the Nationals and the Marlins, don't kid yourself, the Mets are in the middle of the pack, regarding up-and-coming pitchers.

I just feel bad for David Wright, it's getting late for his chance to win a World Series.

The Mets were 14 and 11 heading on this roadtrip before leaving Citifield. 2 and 6 = 16 and 17 récord cmon you guys

Pretty sure when Sandy said he "expects the team to win 90 games" he was counting SPRING TRAINING wins!! Even he can't believe this Walmart bin lineup will win 90 regular season games!

If we cant afford to get a couple bats to help score runs, i will have a bon fire with everything METS on it. If the Owners dont care, I will throw 35+ years of being a Met fan out the window. How EMBARASSING to be swept by the Marlins, knowing the money we have. They dont care!

Met bats have been asleep for years. The team is duller than a Julian Gallo book.

Losing is bad enough but losing in walk off fashion so often in Miami just feels so much worse.

And another thing - these walk off celebrations by teams have become just plain obnoxious.

The throw from Lagares wasn't great but Recker has to at least catch that and make a tag.  I don't think it matters but seems like it'd have been really close if he catches the ball.

You can't even blame this one on Terry. I would have made pretty much the same moves. That Abreu AB may have been the worst I've seen this year--from anybody. And Satin did not look particularly good either. Either play the guy or call up Campbell. In the words of Jack Nicholson's Joker, this team needs an enema.

Every offensive player on this team needs to go out and a pound a fat girl. They're called slump busters. My buddy played in the Minors for the Cards for like 4 years, he always told me if guys were in a slump they went out and banged a fat girl. Just a thought.

They won 2-6? I can't remember them winning two games this road trip from Colorado to Miami... Am I missing something?

Had Recker handled the throw from Lagares the run would have never score.

Sandy has failed.  TC has failed.

With TC:  Whats his reasoning tweaking the lineup to where granderson is hitting fourth and duda and young below him?  I hate his old school attitude of catering to the guy with the biggest contract.  He did this with rally killing jason bay and it failed and is failing now.  Its sickening.  THis guy is largely incompetent with in game decisions and lineups.  If Chris young and duda are hitting the ball at 4 and 5, KEEP THEM THERE.  THis aint 2006-2010 Grandy just like it wasnt 2003-2005 Jason Bay.  Adjust dammit.

With Sandy:  When i see abreu smack line drive homers out in chitown, it sickens me that we dont cater to these cuban stars coming over here.  Yet we give a bunch of money to grandy.  Really?  And they wonder why they have to create PR schemes like that stupid letter that darling didnt even read.  Embarrassing.

It was nice to see Wheeler pitch a good game

It always looks like other teams are getting better, bringing up players that perform, while the Mets continue to spin their wheels and make no headway in the division.

@Will Keesee  Can you at least admit that the Marlins are as good as the Mets right now?

@kefhrny17  They won one game in Philadelphia and the second was rained out.

Don't forget about giving an overweight forty year old a two year contract.

@Steven Matregrano  I think the Colon signing is consistent with the Ankiel signing. They both are evidence of someone who has no clue on how to run a team.

Sandy was never mentioned to be on the hot seat, but it's his fault for bringing in a pathetic pen year after year and looking past potential big bats and not filling in the SS position.

@hashburry I have to admit they are a very unlucky club

That's on Sandy. He has failed

Actually, they have better hitting, better pitching and better fielding. In short, the Marlins are better than the Mets at this point in the season.

All which cost $$$.  Its nice for a team to have the luxury to spend $$$ on a Cuban player who has never played a major league game and give him $17M in his first year, however, the Mets don't have that luxury.  Sandy can only do what the Wilpons will let him do and that is build back up the farm system and make the major league team decent on a shoestring budget.  Not by going after the Abreu's and Drew's of the world. Why is this so friggin hard for everyone to comprehend? The Wilpons can't spend $$$.

@Will Keesee Does it really matter what some random "Victor Triguero" says about you? It's just an opinion, like all the others here...

mkjc

@Will Keesee @hashburry  Their road winning percentage is also not sustainable. The Marlins are better than you're giving them credit for. And they are the perfect barometer for the Mets right now. Because they are at a similar stage of development.

Those pitchers will go somewhere else unless the Mets get players that can hit.

Pete Brilvitch

@Will Keesee Believe it or not, this team has more talented players in the system than they've had in some time. I know no one wants to hear that because it hasn't translated to success at the major league level yet, but better days are ahead.

Pete Brilvitch

@mkjc @Will Keesee If these same Marlins were the Mets we wouldn't be impressed that it was done for $40 million less. We'd be bitching that the payroll was under $50 million.

dv92

@Will Keesee  I do, and it's nice to finally read a comment that makes perfect sense. I love the direction this team is going...Young starting pitching that could be nasty for years and years to come. That sounds like a recipe for success to me. It may not show now, but how can you be down on a team that will have Harvey, Wheeler and Thor as the 1-2-3 next year? PATIENCE.

mkjc
mkjc

@Will Keesee @mkjc  Ok good. Since the Marlins have a team that's no worse than the Mets but were able to get to this point in two fewer years and by spending about $40M less, what does it say about Sandy Alderson and his dream team?

Mets are one of the only franchises in baseball to punt a season due to an injury to one pitcher.

But an organization that refuses to add that player?

Losing Harvey and Parnell kinda threw a wrench in that plan, wouldn't you agree?

stemog

@Victor Triguero @nwmetsBottom line is they're going to have to deal from their young pitching to get any kind of impact bat(s) and that's gonna piss people off, too. But, you can't have it both ways. At this point they should sign Morales to play first for one bat and start trying to put a package together for another hitter. Who is available is the big question. If they could deal for Tulowitzki that would be great, but I don't see the Rockies trading him. They really need impact bats and now. Morales alone isn't enough. They need to do something big that's gonna help for a few years.

nwmets

@Victor Triguero Ah, OK. So you're way above all the rest of us, right? You don't even fit into either category! We are not worthy...

@Victor Triguero Yes.  Beyond stating the obvious, your categorizing all fans shows a particular level of lacking self awareness.

@Will Keesee @mkjc @hashburry  What did I say about the Mets? The Mets are doing fine with "The Plan". The Marlins are just doing it better.
