Game Recap: Giants 9, Mets 0

Result: The Mets’ pitching staff and offense struggled in Sunday afternoon’s shutout loss against the Giants, 9-0.

MLB: San Francisco Giants at New York Mets

Need to know: Bartolo Colon was playing for his 200th career win, and fell short with a very rocky performance on the mound. The starting pitcher allowed six runs and eight hits over 4 2/3 innings. The Mets only managed to record two hits over the course of the game, including a double by Wilmer Flores. Neither Daniel Murphy nor Lucas Duda started against the Giants’ starting pitcher, Madison Bumgarner. The left-hander earned the win for San Francisco, only allowing two hits over nine innings.

What’s next: The Mets will send Dillon Gee (4-4, 3.77) to the mound to conclude their four-game series against the Giants at Citi Field on Monday afternoon at 12:10 p.m. Gee will face Tim Hudson (8-8, 2.71) in New York’s effort to split the series against San Francisco.

Typical DWright day:  1-3, K, GIDP, 0 RBI.  Put this rich, married man on the DL or on the bench!

Did anyone get a good look at the lineup yesterday? It's a miracle we managed TWO hits. Tejada, Young, Recker and Colon. Not a prayer. That also makes three of the last five where the team seems to have quit early and sleepwalked through most of the game. Not a good sign. Plus, you are down seven runs late. Give Wright a few innings off.

Just play Flores everyday.See what this kid can do until end of year.2nd, 3rd,and ss.We really need David to figure it out or next year won't mater. If he does not hit what should they do?

If we are trying to stay in contention what is resting both Murphy and Duda all about ...c'mon Terry lets ramp it up and lose the melba toast lineup....Chris Young needs to find a seat somewhere

There are 390 hitters currently on a major league roster. If Chris Young is one of the top 390 hitters in the world, the game of baseball faces a serious problem.

Sandy may have been to Cute with what he has been asking for Colon. It may end up he owes 11 million next year to a finally washed up 42 year old Colon.

on Auguat 1, 1973, the Mets were in last place and had a LOWER winning percentage than they have today - and they went on to win the pennant, win the NL crown, and on to the 7th game of the World Series.  Never say it is impossible ... because this is the team that made "miracle" a sports term.

For all the Flores supporters, here's something to augment your argument to give him a sustained chance:

May 17 to May 26 = Started 7 of 9 games and went 7 for 27 which is .259; still better than Tejada.

May 29 to June 5 = Started 6 of 9 games and went 6 for 20 which is .300; again better than Tejada

June 6 to June 26 = Started 4 of 18 games and went 3 for 21 which is .143; poor yes, but playing in less than one quarter the games.

July 24 to Aug 3 = Started 5 of 10 games and went 4 for 16 which is .250; again better than Tejada.

My point and others who want to see him given a sustained chance is, that given a string of games together to get in a grove, he'll still do better than the alternative.  Many want to point to the June stats and say that is what to expect.  That is foolish and ignoring the fact that when one doesn't play, a player cannot get into a hitting groove.  Others will point to last season when instead of being placed on the DL with a bad wheel, he was kept around to play on basically one good wheel.  And for those who want to say he doesn't walk, I'd say that if you are in the doghouse the way he is, he cannot wait for a walk, hence the free-swinging.  When started, its clear he has a better chance for extra base hits and hits the ball with more authority than Tejada ever will.

The season is done despite the Kool-Aid that Sandy and Terry are trying to pass along to the fans.  We have a sub-par hitting SS in Tejada and no LF; Young is an albatross to this team.  Its time to see if Flores has a true spot on the team.  If he can hit .275 or above with sustained starts the rest of the way with extra-base hits and clutch hits, I'd say that unless we are going to acquire Tulo or some other world-beater for SS, he deserves the job.  I don't think he is the second coming of Strawberry, but I feel he is definitely better than what we have currently.

I just wish someone in the media had the balls to say to Terry at the post game press conference, "Terry, Chris Young is currently one of the worst hitters in baseball. Why do you feel he deserves to bat 5th in the lineup every night? This isn't a subjective statement. Every statistic right now is pointing to him being in the bottom of the bottom tier of hitters. His defense has also been a notable liability."

Terry would just bust an eyeball.

Colon did not eat enough donuts.  This team is so inconsistent they look good one day look bad the other.  Sandy needs to fix this next year with more consistent ball players

Darnaud C

Flores SS

Harvey

DeGrom

Wheeler

So, the only guy to have an extra base hit in both of the last two games, who had to get both hits at the bottom of the order, will probably have to sit tomorrow, in favor of today's #2 batter, who took the collar, Sunday. Why won't Terry let the Flores, with 145 - yes 145 - RBI in 162 AAA games, bat in the heart of the order, everyday, where he belongs?

Kenneth Meltsner

@nymetsrule He is in the lineup because Sandy has so ordered. Whatever happened to the 'meritocracy' that Keith and Gary are always talking about? Face is. there is NO ONE to play LF. They will bring up den Dekker and probably release Abreu, who has just been brutal. But CY is here for the duration--out of spite, if nothing else.

matmil
matmil

@nymetsrule That is certainly the key question. Why do they continue to play this guy. The proof that his hitting days are over is clear, some say it is because of some promise made by Sandy to him when he signed to give him a certain number of at bats this year , but I don't buy it. I thought before the deadline it was to showcase him in hopes some team would want him so they would be off the hook on his salary. Now I don't know ,I can't imagine why they keep playing him. I'd like somebody to explain it to me.

matmil

@alphaq We are gonna know in a few more days whether we are going to have meaningful games or not. This week is crucial to this team going forward, that's why yesterdays lineup and the continued playing of Chris Young are so hard to figure out.

ken1010
ken1010

@alphaq

Sure, we're moving forwards towards being a .500 team, and given that one-third of teams make the playoffs, even being .500 means you're in the race.

No meaningful games in September this year, but I expect them next year, assuming off-season trades of pitching for hitting work.

We are now in the longest current stretch without a playoff appearance of any team except Houston.  I do expect that to end within a few years.  We're not that much worse off than every other team except Houston.

matmil

@John Kranzley Wright has to be dropped in the lineup. Not enough production ,maybe to 5 behind Duda. Murph to the 3 spot.

matmil

@Sean Garcia Sean your right about most things however I was not down on Collins until the last few weeks. I think this is a crucial time for this team and his continued playing of CYoung and his inability to change the lineup even in the face of really poor offense has made me think he can't manage a pennant race. No urgency, no thinking out of the box except for the stupid move of batting the pitcher in the 8 spot. He has to coax some more production out of these hitters because they are wasting some great pitching.

@Doubleday

Great Post...why not?

He's proved to be able to get the big hit when needed...wow, 145 rbi's in 162 games...impressive

hubie_wc
hubie_wc

@Doubleday And how many rbi's does he have in the major leagues over two years?  He is 4 for 21 since returning, which is below .200 and he hasn't even drawn a walk.  He has started 5 out of 10 games.  Not exactly rotting on the bench.

@Michael Portanova @Doubleday i don't think it's that people love flores, it's that for some reason there are people who think being a "real fan" means the team can do no wrong...everything they do must always be correct, so they must defend it vigorously.  it's really annoying.

hubie_wc
hubie_wc

@Wayno Not comparing him to Tejada but I wish people would stop making Flores out to be the next Darryl Strawberry.  He has nearly 200 ML at bats and he is hitting .218 with a .249 obp and a .298 slugging %.  I am glad he is getting some playing time so we can see what he's got, but playing time needs to be earned and Flores really hasn't earned it.

I much rather see Campbell in LF than Flores at SS right now.

matt greco
matt greco

@hubie_wc @Wayno who the hell is making flores out to be the next darryl strawberry?  oh, that's right...nobody is.  nice try, though.

he is a better option than tejada...that's all we're saying.

Doubleday
Doubleday

I would counter that with 145 RBI in 162 AAA games, Flores has earned an opportunity to play every day for the remainder of the season, to see how it translates to the ML level.

jrb74
jrb74

@hubie_wc @Wayno Let him play everyday for the remainder of the season and then comment on his abilities.  His 200 MLB at bats have been sporadic and when Terry does play him, he's typically placed in a spot with the least chance for success.  Look at Duda.  Many criticized him the same way that you're criticizing Flores.  Once Davis left and Duda finally got regular playing time in the middle of the line-up, he began to flourish.  I don't begin to rate Flores as the next Strawberry (or even Duda), but the guy has been grossly mishandled to date at the ML level.

stemog
stemog

@hubie_wc @Wayno Flores needs to play everyday for an extended period. Not every other day.

nncyel
nncyel

@matt greco @hubie_wc @Wayno eric88 thinks he will be the Mets best hitter if he would only get enough playing time.

better option than Tejada? that's the problem people - why don't you get it - he hasn't been better than Tejada. And given the fact that a significant portion of this blog thinks that Tejada is the worst player in all of baseball that's saying something. If you can't hit better than Tejada than you sure as hell shouldn't be playing every day. And then there's the fact that offense is only one part of the equation. Tejada is a better defensive player than Flores at SS. Tejada has an 0.9 WAR, Flores is at -0.3. That's right negative WAR - not good. A significant portion of that difference is due to Tejada's better defensive play at SS.

Everyone on this blog is euphoric when the Mets win a game. Tejada actually gives the team a better chance of winning right now than Flores. Perhaps that will change; the Mets are giving Flores some chances to prove his worth. Flores has not seized those chances. End of story.

nncyel
nncyel

@Doubleday Let Flores start hitting like he has in AAA and he'll play. So far he hasn't so he won't play every day. Pretty simple really. And please, enough of the "he has to play every day" nonsense. So if the team has a day off in their schedule they're less likely to hit than if they played the day before. Nonsense.

I'd love to see Flores hit .320, get enough walks that he has a high .300 OBP and drive in a run every other game. He hasn't. No one "hates" Flores - he's a very good prospect. But enough with the "he'll become our best hitter if he just gets enough at bats" nonsense. Let's see it, let's not justify playing time based on projections from AAA stats.

Tarheel11
Tarheel11

@nncyel This whole WAR thing confuses me to be honest. But if I look at fangraphs;

Tejada

2010 -.4

2011 1.6

2012 1.7

2013 -.4

2014 .4

Scrub 0-1

Role Player 1-2

Solid Starter 2-3

Good Player 3-4

All Star 4-5

Superstar 5-6

MVP 6+

So in Tejada's two BEST years he's a role player. So why are we defending him?

jrb74
jrb74

@nncyel I wouldn't compare a day off in their schedule to a player riding the bench for extended periods.  How many days of his ML stints has Flores played compared to sitting in favor of a weak hitting Tejada?  Tell me what everyday player on any team wouldn't be negatively impacted if they were all of a sudden penciled in like Terry pencils in Flores.  He played every day in AAA and he raked.  Again, he may not ever be a star, or even a regular; but it's ridiculous to have him at the ML level if Terry will only grudgingly play him here and there.  This, while he plays others who we know have no future with this team.

nncyel
nncyel

@Tarheel11 @nncyel Because Flores hasn't been playing better. If the Mets had signed Peralta one would have to be insane to argue that Tejada should be splitting time with him. They didn't. The options are Tejada, who is indeed in the bottom third of starting SS in the league or Flores who is playing worse than Tejada. Until Alderson gets a better alternative to Tejada, he gets playing time.

This is not a global discussion - on a global scale Tejada is not a great player. On a local scale - the Mets current roster - he gets to play because no one is better at SS. I'd love to see Flores seize his chance and displace Tejada. If he can hit like he has in the minors it would give the Mets a better chance of winning. He hasn't.

matt greco
matt greco

@nncyel @Tarheel11 how is he supposed to "seize" his "chance"?  what chance is he seizing when terry plays him once a week?

they had FOUR hits in the past three games, if you take out the 7th inning saturday.  flores had two of those four, and he's sitting today.  how the hell is he ever supposed to "seize" anything if the manager won't play him consistently?

Tarheel11
Tarheel11

@nncyel @Tarheel11 I hear what you are saying. But I guess my point is don't we already know what Tejada is? Can Flores really be worse? Would it really hurt this team to throw Flores out there every day for a month?
