Game Recap: Giants 4, Mets 3

Result: Defensive heroics from Juan Lagares and a two-run homer from Daniel Murphy weren’t enough for the Mets, who fell, 4-3, to the Giants after Jenrry Mejia gave up a go-ahead double to Pablo Sandoval in the ninth inning.

MLB: San Francisco Giants at New York Mets

MLB: San Francisco Giants at New York Mets

Need to know: Murphy went 2-for-5 with a two-run homer and a run scored. David Wright beat out an infield single that plated Murphy with two outs in the fifth inning, but the Mets would not score again.  Lagares went 3-for-4 and threw out what would have been the go-ahead run at the plate in the seventh inning. Dillon Gee allowed two runs on five hits, striking out six and walking three.  Jeurys Familia‘s wild pitch allowed the Giants to tie the game before Mejia took the loss in the ninth. Manager Terry Collins was ejected in the seventh inning after arguing balls and strikes with umpire Ben May.

I think this is as frustrating of a loss that we've had in a while. Poor management of the bullpen and pinch hitters. And if you're Mejia, how could you possibly throw an 0-2 pitch in the strike zone?

By passing on trading for a hitter last week, SA at Wilpons behest elected to let us spend more time on other things the rest of the summer. Maybe he is right, but its another year without fun in August and September for big baseball fans. Thanks guys.

Everyone yelling about Tejada and I don't disagree, but his BA is now .228 and Curtis is .225 and TDA is .219.  Getting tired of Curtis weak ass swing.  Someone needs to kick some butt - TC, u hear me? (probably not).

Don't understand people who say Alderson is ok and it's Terry's fault. Who gave Terry the players? Do you think Terry makes any major decision on this team? I highly doubt EY continues to be in the line-up because Terry wants him there. SA pinky swore 500 at bats to CY and is sticking with it. SA is probably protecting Tejada too.

Umm, Wilmer doubles in two games in a row, and we're still subjected to Tejada and his .223 batting average?  Typically, when you need offense, you bring up a kid who provides offense, and you play him, hoping he'll produce in the bigs the same way he produced in AAA.  Not here.

once again, this teams favorite number of runs to score (3) Yet Sandy is content with this offense.I guess he expects us to be all pumped up about Abreu being DFAd,and Kirk coming up,his version of our big trade deadline splash OF bat (not that I don't like Newie).

Can't really kill Mejia and Familia here today, they have been stellar for us,but for the love of God,TDA needs to work on his skills behind the plate, we talk about Murph killing us on defense, well Travis has also killed us with some of those balls he cannot get in front of.I know some are impossible for any catcher but,he needs to stop the ones that are routine for guys like Posey,I know he's still fairly green back there so I'm hoping he gets better in time other then just being good at framing pitches.

With this horrible series,we now have to hope we can do something in Washington, not holding my breath, but I think especially tomorrow if Gio is off his game we can tear him up a bit and score some runs for Wheeler. We also have degrom last game of the series, once again,if we can score runs we might have a chance to win this series.Big MIGHT though.

Hate to pick on TDA but his airmail throw in the ninth hurt big time. Also, when you are 0 and 2 on Sandoval in the ninth, you make sure your pitcher bounces one in the dirt, not lay one down the middle. His offense, well not much there either......he is a rookie, but certainly not a young one.

Sadly, 3 out of 4 to the Giants was not a shock. Gotta get those bats into this lineup. The bullpen has been excellent of late, so an occasional loss from them is to be expected. It's the bats, pure and simple. They just don't have them and do not seem inclined to add them, which will waste a bunch of good years from our pitchers.

Terry Collins or anyone on this coaching staff is not the future of this team. Im sorry but its time. I ll always root for the Mets but its hard. I d rather see them lose the next 30 than to tease you thinking they stand a chance against anyone. Close games are won usually by the better coached team. Boche blows away the entire Mets coaching staff.

1. I heard many years ago that you never put your closer in in a tie game unless you are desperate.

2. I thought Familia was the 8th inning guy in case i missed a few games.

3. A team with 3 Met killers is hard to beat.

4. When you know Met killer #1 is coming up and his name is Sandoval and lefty, why put the lefty up just as he comes to bat.

5. Yes, i hate Collins, proly Warthen just as much. They are not the future, let them go sooner than later please.

dropping 3 out of 4 at home to the team you're chasing for the wild card, thats also 3 out of 4 nails in the coffin.

Someone have to remind these guys they are allow to score in every inning beside the first.

I noticed every time you believe in this team they always either laugh at you for believing by getting blown up or losing in an unlucky game because some guy flung his bat at a good pitch and got lucky.

Did you know the first 3 games of this series, the Mets were 8 for 89? In the first 6 innings of all 3 of those games combined, they were 2 - 56. That means besides this game, this series we've gone 2 for 56 in the first 6 innings of each game.

And we're worried about giving up a stinking pitcher?

Some logic I just don't get.

5 years of losing baseball....matched ONLY by the Astros.

To address this half decade of losing, the Mets went out and REDUCED payroll.

Well boys and girls....welcome to the 6th season in a row!

Cut Chris Young.  Just do it.  I understand this team has a number of problems that go beyond him, but this is an issue that has a simple solution and I don't see the purpose in dragging this out any longer.

@thwacker What else does Tejada do besides .228? Granderson is a veteran leader with HR pop (tho I think he'll hit more next year). Tejada's .228 is the best part about his game.

@Steven Molello If you are going to blame the lineup decisions on Sandy, then Terry is bulletproof, yes.

@Doubleday he's also looked pretty good in the field.I'm sure many of us saw that awesome diving play he made the other day.

Michael Mee

@gold ....? How is it d'Arnaud's fault? Yeah he made an error on the throw, but the runner did not advance. Mejia's control was poor the entire inning. He kept trying to locate his breaking ball and it kept hanging over the middle, over and over again. It was not intentional on the catcher or pitcher's part.

They have no margin for error with this offense as a whole. It's been their biggest problem all year.

You always put your closer in a tie game at home. Unless he's unavailable that day. No save opportunity at home, so you use him in a tied game. Every manager in baseball does it

6 under .500. We are officially not chasing them for a WC right now. We are now back to the edge of the season falling apart. They go and get swept in DC, and that's that.

@rowjamie dude....we spend .50 cents for every dollar the Giants spend.....winning 1 out of 4 in that light is an accomplishment.

@shea Welcome to the late 70s and early 80s, we'll all have all the fun over again as we have for the last 5 years.

Am I the only one that would compare the late 70s and early 80s to this bad stretch?

Many in here will yell at you over your comment, but it is 100% spot on.  I think people have become complacent with losing in here, and buy all this crap about how great Sandy is with "building a farm system."

@Straw18 @mi withn 2 weeks the mets will probably release Chris Young and Campbell will spilt more time (platoon) @ 1st base and LF, when the Mets face Lefty Pitchers.

@lindro88 To break it down, 1 hit in the first 6 innings of the first game, 0 hits in the first 6 innings of the Peavy - deGrom no-hitter, and 1 hit in the first 6 innings vs Bumgardner yesterday making the team 2 for 56.

Also 2 hits the first game total, 4 hits 2nd game total, 2 hits 3rd game total, making the team 8 for 89.

lindro88

Well if you compare them to the early 80's hopefully the mid 80's are next

lindro88

Oakland is an anamaly. They get the most out of average players in the history of baseball. They platoon all over the field. They can spend big money on a guy like Jim Johnson, he's terrible and they don't miss a beat. Beane is a special talent as a GM, along with whoever is helping him find players. He just traded his cleanup hitter, and odds are someone else will step up.

lindro88

You should send an email with those numbers to one of the Mets beat writers, I bet they use that. Those are bizarre numbers. All time bad

@lindro88 Yeah, hopefully...

I'd compare this year to 1983, the year before the 1984 season, the year of this potential breakout team.

@lindro88 Have any Mets writers emails? I know some twitters but no emails.

lindro88

I'd look on nypost.com. A friend of mine once came up with something similar, emailed the Yankees beat writer, and he mentioned it, and him in his next column. I bet Phil Mushnick in the Post, although he covers sports media, would use that nugget.
