Game Recap: Cubs 7, Mets 4

Result: The Mets lost to the Cubs, 7-4, on Thursday night in Chicago as the Cubs completed a three-game sweep.

Need to Know: Anthony Rizzo hit a long solo home run off Vic Black in the seventh to give the Cubs a 5-4 lead. The Mets had climbed out of a 4-0 hole to even things up, scoring two runs in the sixth on a pair of RBI singles and two more in the seventh when Andrew Brown hit a long two-run homer. Shoddy defense by the Mets and an overturned out call at home plate led to three runs for the Cubs in the second inning as they took a 3-0 lead. In the fourth, the Cubs extended their lead to 4-0 on a run-scoring ground out.

Game Ball: DeGrom, who pitched better than his line indicated. If the Mets played even adequate defense behind deGrom, the results would’ve been very different.

What’s Next: The Mets open a three-game series on Friday night in San Francisco. Jon Niese gets the start for the Mets, opposed by Matt Cain for the Giants. The game starts at 10:15 p.m.

Lets get real people. It doesn't take a brain surgeon to be a baseball manager. The difference between good managers and bad managers is good ones understand human nature. If you have a lot of talent you can be patient, calm and understanding. If you have mediocre talent, which is what the mets have, then you have to motivate them to overachieve .I am an old timer.Seen a lot of bad baseball seen a lot of life.As all old infantryman know , a good way to motivate people is through anger. What gets men through the last 5 miles of a 25 mile road march is anger.Thats why the sergeants are screaming at you.It is anger that gets you past your fatigue and focuses your mind on an objective. As we all know the modern ball player is usually someone who has been coddled most of his life. They live in the lap of luxury.Money will not motivate them. The best example is David Wright, Wright is a prototypical modern day player. He is a good player and a good person. But he is not motivated to go beyond himself.Money will not motivate him ,he already has enough..The only way to get him to become a great player is to put a boot up his ass.Get him so angry he spits nails. The same goes for this entire team. You must embarrass them.Beat them down then build them up.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     As for Collins he has to be more like Billy Martin.Get his Irish up.As we see coddling doesn't work.Billy Martin had no patience. He coddled no one  he made mediocre teams overachieve because he pissed them off.Collins can not accept stupid mistakes, ala Murphy. When they happen bench them.Pull a Gil Hodges and go out and pull them off the field, embarrass them to the point where they will never do it again. You can't accept the stupid mistakes, your team is not good enough to overcome them. If a relief pitcher walks the first batter he faces pull him.Broker no mistakes.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     As for us fans we have to boo them relentlessly . Make them so embarrassed that the other teams laugh at them. This will get them angry at the opposition. That is what makes winners they hate the other team. They hate to lose. This comaraderie between the opposing teams is fine for talented teams but not for this Mets team. They have got to hate to lose. That is one of the biggest reasons f r their mediocre play, they don't hate to lose.Watch Wright , no matter how bad the Mets are he is always smiling and joking with the other teams players,he is certainly a nice man but he is no winner, because he has no fire in the belly.Anger is a great motivator, Alderson should know this from his days in the Corp. Lets see some fireworks, lets see some water cooler busting ,let me see somebody cares.

Well, the season has hit a new low. Hate to go all Butterfly Effect on everyone but if we turn that easy DP  it's an entirely different game. Same with that one the other night. Bad teams find a way to do this. And so much for the Lamar Johnson Effect. Same crappy AB's we've been seeing all season. The last thing I want to do is come-off like one of those cretins who call the 'FAN on 'Met Suicide Hotline' but can't we all agree that something is broken and changes need to be made before yet another season fades to irrelevance?

Can anyone explain to me why the CURSE (TC) keeps playing CY...I need to understand the reasoning behind this as I can't figure this out.  All other major league managers would have benched him and some GM's would have outright given him his release...so why is this guy playing?

Never thought I'd say this, but the Backman scenario is starting to look more realistic, although I still think it's less than 50-50.  If the losing keeps up, the Wilpons will be staring at a long summer of many, many, many empty chairs at Citi.  Not good for a team fighting for its financial life.  Backman may the only option for bringing people back to the ballpark, and if Sandy doesn't like it, well, he's at the end of his deal and and Selig is retiring.  Throw in the team's record over the past few years, and you have the groundwork for regime change.

I love all the TC defenders... after a few wins in Philly-- see! see!

Admittedly-- during those games (and vs PITT), TC had his best stretch -- I realize just as much as any sane person that this team does not have hitters and everything cannot be blamed on Collins -- but he has made a boatload of managerial mistakes
but like these first two games in CHI -- they've squandered SO MANY opportunities and I've been around sports long enough to know that maybe, just maybe, this team is taking on the characteristics of its leader....  a loser who makes mental mistakes and squanders opportunities

Like Gary mused the other night after yet another base running error [Murphy] -- how many has this team made this year? how many games has it cost them...

the answer is .. a lot. We can blame hitting all we want and it certainly is the biggest part of the team's problems -- but the little things matter too and matter a lot. this team should easily be over .500

they should have won the firs two vs. the Cubs.. 8 of their last 10 .. and on to SF to scrap out a win or two .. not get swept, again

Wasn't it just the other day the question was do you go out and add a bat for a run at the playoffs. PLAYOFFS? PLAYOFFS? Now that is funny. Look ay your lineup from last night and be realistic. We need to be sellers.

We need to trade anyone we have to get talent around our pitching. It is our only strength. You need to move Murph. I love the guy, but he can help a contender and may return talent. It may not be popular, but DW is not excluded from a deal. He is another guy I like, but his power is gone and he has lost the ability to hit in the clutch.

We need new leadership. Whether his hands were tied or not, Sandy has done a very bad job at the major league level. Whoever replaces him will deal with Collins. Finally we need to pray that the Wilpons are forced to sell. They are bad owners and bad for baseball.

I have followed this team since '62. Watched them at Shea, old Yankee, the Polo Grounds, and will always bleed orange and blue, but this is just not a team you can believe in anymore.

Swept by the Cubs, soon to be swept by the Giants so on the way home stop by Las Vegas and pick up Wally to be the new manager

Despite all of the Mets' woes, they are only 4 games out of first place...Alderson...DO SOMETHING! Make a trade! Make a run THIS YEAR and get us excited about next year!

Mets screw up the draft and get swept by the worst team in baseball, summer is officially here!

Its not TC, its the batters leaving the runners stranded in scoring position.

Mark Phelan

It's as if Pete Rose has bets on the games and controls the strings.  It defies all logic and odds that our batters fail to drive in runs to this extent.

I read that our first round draft pick - an outfielder - was chosen for his ability to take balls.  Mama Mia, don't we have enough of this type of 'hitter' already?

They lose the cubs but beat the Phillies 4 out 5 tines. This team is a tragedy.

Could you possibly cut this "game ball" crap. No one is interested in Pyrric victories. It is just losers looking for some small positive and it is annoying.

Possible positive outcome from Cubs fiasco. TC may finally go. His undoing before was losing temper and clubhouse. Interviews have been tense for while and now he and Wright appear to be headed for tense times as well. Not saying at all that Wright hasn't been dreadful in big spots, but TC taking him out in a one run game wasn't just about needing a spot for the pitcher. Apparently DW was very curt in post game interview when asked about it. He also said he was tired of hearing about how tired everyone was and that all that talk was nothing more than excuses. TC is the one who has been talking about how tired they are so DW is basically telling everyone he wishes TC would zip it. TC also had said he and DW talked about and planned a day off for him. DW said they hadn't talked about it at all. Could it be true? Could TC's time really be coming to an end? Fingers crossed everyone!!

Peter Lescak

Face it. He is a bit overrated. I love the guy but he hasn't been coming through. He gets paid alot of money to play everyday. I don't want to hear he's tired or needs a day off. Also, all of the crying and bitching about the dimensions at citifield is nonsense. They scored 9 freaking runs in 3 days at Wrigley. That's just pathetic.

At least we saw a lot of encouraging signs from Travis d'Arnaud last night.

Bob Primosch

I have a feeling that the bad defense may be the trigger for firing TC.  The hitting is a personnel issue -- with no real improvement after Hudgens, it would be absurd to pin the offense on the staff..

Mets face Cain, Hudson and Linecum this weekend. I'll guess they score 2 runs this weekend...figure one day they'll be shut out, maybe a 2 hitter.

We're only 2 months in and Wright has 60 strikeouts and Granderson has 64.    Do they just swing at anything or can't they see the ball?  They should have their eyes examined.

bad ....

bad teams keep making bad decisions -- 6 years and counting...

what they're doing ain't working -- if you're approach in any sport is not working.. something needs to change...

@Not4Nutten  Nothing different than last year, and the year before, and the year before and the year before.  But hey, next year, we'll put out pretty much the same roster, with a few scrap heap pick ups and for sure it will be better this time.

nolrog

@Cheryl Ann  Collins won't go.  He is under contract for 2015 and you know how much the Wilpons hate eating money, plus his incompetence on the field provides great cover for Wilpon and Alderson.

Richard Alicea
Richard Alicea

@mustang66  they won't and the CURSE (TC) has to have his boy CY in left field...that's automatic.  You see he want's to prove the fans wrong as he's hoping that CY begins to rake...but the only raking CY is going to do are the leaves at the CURSE'S home in October.

Bad hitting could be the "philosophy" thought. Which would trace back Sandy

Richard Alicea

@suzyq  quite honestly they are trying to hit for the rest of the team as they are the money makers of the team...I believe they are pressing and thus their strikeouts are high.

monstah
monstah

@suzyq He does K a lot but Wright is also 1 hit away from leading the NL in hits- Murph and 2 others are tied for the lead with 73 and Wright has 72. The sad thing is with Lagares out, NOBODY else is hitting. There's nobody to drive them in. It's pathetic. NYM clutch hits are like unicorns - I think I saw one once!

I hope they do bring up Wally to manage. Than when the team plays exactly as poorly, people will realize we need players. This isn't a high school football team that needs a rah rah coach to get the kids to work harder. Nothing against Wally, loved him a player, but he's still going to be putting the same players on the field.

Zach Goeringer
Zach Goeringer

@metzsuc @Zach Goeringer They drafted a muted player who's biggest draw is that he is conducive to the front office's philosophy. He was also highly sought after because he was the best player on the best team in the country, but that doesn't always spell success. There were a handful of better players on the board.

I agree the Wilpons are cheap but if this team continues to lose when this was the year that they were expected to compete or at least improve then I can't see how the Wilpons will keep Terry when Citi Field is a ghost town in August and September.

Cheryl Ann
Cheryl Ann

Not so sure. NY press like sharks if they smell blood in the water. SNY crew has been criticizing not just in game decisions but also now talking about how TC should stop talking about the fans, booing, Citifield, and now being tired. DW is big bud of Jeff W and for better or worse, the Captain and franchise face. All pro athletes can be prima donnas and like Keith always says they have to be handled differently now. Still think there is hope TC self implodes.

Andrew Pasquale
Andrew Pasquale

@lindro88 The new age GMs (like Alderson) don't want a Wally type managing the team. They want managers who listen to the direction of the GM and their saber-metrics. Can't say I agree with it, but that's where the league has and will continue to go.

nolrog
nolrog

@lindro88  We absolutely need better players.  However, Collins has managed us into a few losses as well and he doesn't seem to get the most out of his players like other managers do (not saying Wally will do that, but Collins certainly does not.)

mi

You are right about that , people that say we need Blackman for rah rah are dumb ..but we do need someone who can actually manage instead of just never bunting, hit and running or ever making the right bullpen decesion ever

@oldrockingguy @Zach Goeringer @metzsuc

a big lug whose power declined, who strikes out a lot and can't play defense -- he'll fit right in

and there's this nonsense:
My approach at the plate is relaxed aggression,” he said. “It's a smart intensity.”

they've drafted enough hitters the last few years--all of whom we have to wait on -- this guy may be the most ready --COMING OUT OF THE DRAFT--doesn't mean we'll see him anytime soon

they should've gone pitching--added to the depth and traded arms for an established bat this summer, you know, maybe we'll want a hitter for NEXT YEAR, not 2018

and the experts-- you want to detail how many times the "experts" are wrong? all their supreme knowledge and they don't get it right more often than Jimmy, who just guesses

He's the best at getting on base in the draft, i'll give him that.
