Game Recap: Cubs 5, Mets 4

Result: The Mets fell to the Cubs, 5-4, on Wednesday night at Wrigley Field

Need to Know: After suffering a heartbreaking defeat on Tuesday, Wednesday’s loss via a wild pitch wasn’t much better. The Mets jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Daniel Murphy scored on an error, while Lucas Duda drove in two runs with a double. The Cubs responded with two runs in the bottom of the first off of starting pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka. Ruben Tejada added a solo home run in the fourth, pushing the Mets’ lead to 4-2. It was Tejada’s second home run in a week, and marked the first time in his career that Tejada hit more than one home run in a season. The Cubs knocked Matsuzaka out of the game after 4 2/3 innings, turning the ball over to reliever Dana Eveland. The lefty would allow the tying runs to score, though they were charged to Matsuzaka. Later in the inning, after coming into the game to replace Eveland with the bases loaded, Jeurys Familia uncorked a wild pitch that rolled the backstop and allowed the go-ahead run to score. The Mets loaded the bases in the fifth and sixth innings but failed to produce a run.

Game Ball: Murphy led the Mets on Wednesday with three hits and scored the game’s first run.

What’s Next: The Mets will try to avoid being swept by the Cubs on Thursday night in the series finale. Rookie Jacob deGrom looks to pick up his first win, while lefty Travis Wood gets the start for the Cubs.

With JUST squeaking  by the  Phillies  ,  then dropping  2  to the  poorest team in baseball...  here  does  that  place  the  Mets ???  .....

At least they didn't string us along by getting to or beyond .500 against the last place Cubs.

This team is missing what it has been missing for years now, that one hitter who late in the game will get that big hit or home run to win a game.

I don't think hardly anyone really believed the Mets could win 90 prior to this week (and for those who believe in Unicorn s, that's ok). But, all we ask now is that the team win enough and play well enough to keep us hopeful and interested throughout the summer. Its fun arguing Flores Vs Tejada, how to use the youth to make up for Duda and Young, who to pitch, and  the role of the manager, but by offering a lousy bullpen , no offense at first and a long shot in CY, we are destined for obscurity.

As far as the future, the fact that our owners were pals and invested much of their riches on Bernie Madoff, is all you need to know about their wisdom. Until they lose more and more money fielding a mediocre team, they likely wont invest  or sell.

Definition of insanity: doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.  Granderson hitting clean-up, CY hitting at all.  Murphy and Wright are dead men walking they are so exhausted.  Try Duda clean-up, what else have we got? Otherwise, The Muts are the most depressing team to watch in pro sports.  Cubs- Mets?  There aren't enough pills in the medicine cabinet.

During the game, the Cub announcers were commenting on how many "hittable fastballs" the Mets took with runners on base.  Our philosophy at work.  I guess we we're just waiting for something we could drive.   Maybe a hanging slider on a tee?  Apparently not fastballs down the middle with the bases loaded.

That wild pitch from Familia in the 5th inning was not so bad that it couldn't have been stopped. Anthony Recker is barely a major league ballplayer. I'm sure the Mets would have lost anyway -- they left too many runners on base to deserve to win --  but things like this should be kept in mind when everyone's screaming for Travis d'Arnaud's head.

Sandy i would never of blame you to get Ruggiano or Nate Shulholtz types vs going for Chris Young. lot less money higher upside.

I just want to commend TC for seeing the opportunity to pinch hit CY in the 6th. His ability to sense that Campbell must be exhausted sitting on the bench and CY is in mid season form is just another subtle reminder of why TC is the manager.

One good note is that the Angels and Astros both went to the post season the year after firing Collins. In both cases they did it with the same players. So the sooner he is fired, the sooner we start winning.

Josh Lewin called this ' a root canal of a game'. Sums it up nicely.

One step forward, two steps back is the hallmark of mediocrity (and I'm being kind).  Those of us who love this team are in for a roller-coaster of a season.

6 years of lousy baseball is enough.

Let's face it--this team is good at only one thing: giving false hope

-Good April: "hey maybe they'll be alright"

-Miserable May

-Win 6 of 7: "hey maybe they'll be alright"

-lose two to the team with the worst record in baseball when the wins were handed to them on a silver platter

they stink

The New York Cubs beat the Philadelphia Cubs and then lost to the Chicago Cubs. Cub fans are incredibly forgiving (in Chicago). No sense rehashing the obvious. As games progress, what little offense they have disappears. Same old Mets...thanks for the power bat Sandy

Game ball?? The game ball goes to the Cubs for taking advantage of a terrible team.

Now, that is the mets we know and love.

As bad as we need offense, the Met's need another left handed starter.  Teams are now just stacking their lineups with lefties. If the met's are buyers this year, than this should be addressed.  I had a funny feeling about these games against the Cubs being a trap series.

decent teams don't lose to abysmal teams,  we have just gift-wrapped the last two nights. Like someone said last week, when will Collins show some fire? Every post-game conference is marked by how 'tired' guys are, how they 'battle' etc.

Like all you guys, I am frustrated. Just when you think the team is turning a corner, they regress. Bottom line, this is not a good team. Bad teams lose games that make you crazy. But the Mets are a BAD TEAM. Period. We all want them to be better...but they just ain't. Managers don't win or lose more than 5 games a year. So, blaming TC is fun. I have done it too. The fact is that Sandy Alderson has, once again, given him a bad team to work with. 90 Wins? Seriously?

Bill Parcells had a very astute comment some years ago..."You are what your record is". No truer words. Sandy Alderson is a below mediocre General Manager. The Mets are a below mediocre team. No more complicated than that. We were just sold another bill of goods by the Mets. Sad.

Excellent job getting swept by the worst team in professional sports..no wait, the Mets would then have to beat themselves...no wait, they beat themselves EVERY GAME!!!

I hate this fking team and their ignorant, lying, thieving owners.

Just a waste watching this team right now. Just one big tease, only thing to look forward for me the rest of the year is Syndegaard coming up.

can the people who never question anything the mets do and call people who ever do such a thing "not real fans" finally stop insisting this is a good team or is "really close?"  good teams do not lose two of three (or get swept) by the worst team in baseball...PERIOD.  just stop.

Why are we leaving the rookies on the bench against a team like this? Im so tired of watching leads turn into losses. Sickening. Im not watching any more, waste of time.

Watching the Mets lately is the biggest waste of time...it's painful.  I really feel for the TV and radio announcers.  The offense is so bad it's sad to call them professional ballplayers.  We could do better with a high school team.  David Wright ...Mr. "unclutch" is just as horrible as everyone else.  I seriously hope they don't vote this guy into the All Star Game to embarrass himself.  They intentionally walked Wright tonight to load the bases with 2 outs because they know Granderson would strike out or fly out and how right they were.  He should feel humiliated.   Not only do they need to cut Chris Young loose but Granderson needs to stub his toe, pull a hamstring or whatever else they pull and get himself on the DL.  I can't stand looking at him anymore.  The biggest waste of 15 mil a year EVER!!!   We aren't going anywhere this year, next year or the year after that until the Wilpons sell the team but of course they won't because they're too selfish and Bud Selig thinks the sun rises and shines with them....and we're not going anywhere with Sandy Alderson who Selig pushed for.  Every new signing  in the off-season was awful except maybe Colon who was terrible but had 3 good last starts. To think we're stuck with Grandy 3 more years is a nightmare.  I thought we were turning the corner with those 4 wins in Philly...guess not :(

THE WORST TEAM IN BASEBALL BEAT US. They had a better bullpen & we had a pen that let us down, Dice-k also struggled. We let too many on base & had bases loaded twice.

Richard Davis

So, another disastrous trip to Wrigley.  Let's see; Campbell and Flores on the bench, check.  Bullpen exhausted again by Mr. Baseball, Terry Collins, check.   Since this is clearly a lost season, is it too much to ask for Bachman to come up and replace Collins?  At least he'll probably bring Kirk up with him and play the young guys so we can actually see what they can do instead of the 'play one game and sit the rest of the week' mantra that is Collins' staple.  And please cut the 7 million dollar waste of space; he's worse than Bay was.

Jerry Colfer

They probably don't match up well with Sandy's hitting philosophy. Sure they cost less, hit more and produce, but are they a philosophical fit?

Jerry Colfer
Jerry Colfer

Great point! I have never heard of a game ball for anyone on a losing team. This is like giving everyone trophys in youth sports. Murph got 3 hits and we lost...game ball to the Cubs

@Ed Renner Managers make the lineups, deciding who plays and who doesn't.  They determine in game stategy (sacrifices, steals, pinch hitters, pitching changes, etc. etc. so they have a hand in EVERY game and situation.

metsbb76
metsbb76

@matt greco It's not a good team, but the team isn't too far away from being a good team. We have good pitching and bad offense. The team is 3 games under 500, and has lost a ton of 1 run games this season. If you improve the offense just slightly, some of those 1 run losses turn into wins and you have an above 500 team. I'd say if you add 2 good bats to this offense, you have a contender. The pitching is VERY good and you don't need a great offense when you have very good pitching. Just an average offense would be enough. The team is not far away.

Tejada hit a homer tonight so the Flores discussion isn't worth it. And it's Backman. At least know the name of the person you're supporting.

We do have very good starting pitching.  Without that, we could lose 100.

Anthony Giammattei
Anthony Giammattei

@oldrockingguy @Anthony Giammattei At least that lineup could hit.  That's what I meant.  Read it again.  That was their lineup 7 years ago.  That was the lineup Omar gave to Willie.  Not the Minor League lineup they now have under Alderson.

Ed Renner
Ed Renner

@Robert Hess @Ed Renner This isn't just my theory. A Manager doesn't affect the outcome of more than 5 wins or 5 losses. As Yogi said...you could look it up.

matt greco
matt greco

@metsbb76 you are out of your mind if you think they're only two good bats away...two good bats makes the lineup better, but the bench would still suck.  the bullpen would still suck.

the only way two bats make them a contender is if those two bats are guys like car-go and tulo.  you'd have to add two all-star bats, not just two "good" bats...and even two all-stars don't necessarily make them contenders, because you're probably looking at trading murphy to get those guys (since our cheap owners can't afford anything).

metsbb76
metsbb76

@theglider Don't know how anyone can complain about Tejada playing. He's actually the hottest hitter on the team right now. He's even hit 2 home runs in his last 3 games, so he's showing some pop as well. He looks like the Tejada of 2012 when he was a 290 hitter. Maybe the rough patch is behind him, but we'll have to see if he can keep this up.

@metsbb76 @theglider flores had a 6 rbi game when u needed that game in philly to make things rolling in the right way..this team stinks, it hurts to watch yet we're all still here watching with some hope...I just hope to God something good happens with this team.
