Game Recap: Brewers 5, Mets 1

Result: In 13 innings, the Mets fell to the Brewers by the score of 5-1 on Thursday night at Citi Field in the finale of their three-game set.

Need to Know: After the Mets stranded the potential winning run in scoring position in the 9th, 10th, and 11th innings, the Brewers scored four runs off Carlos Torres in the 13th to take a 5-1 lead. Carlos Gomez committed a two-base error on Daniel Murphy’s single in the fourth that allowed the Mets tie the game 1-1 when Bobby Abreu drove a sacrifice fly to left field. Aramis Ramirez hit a solo homer in the second inning to give the Brewers a 1-0 lead. Jon Niese and Kyle Lohse pitched gems for the Mets and Brewers respectively.

Game Ball: Niese, who was brilliant over 7 2/3 innings pitched. He allowed one run on six hits while walking one and striking out a season high eight.

Stop giving out the game ball to our players when we lose!!!!!!! They didn't even do that crap in little league and we give professional men gold stars for trying. This is the kind of thing that makes mediocrity acceptable. Give out a game ball when we win. When we lose everyone can go home go to bed and think about what they've done.

Last night Ron Darling, who I like to listen to, said it's ok to throw an 85 MPH fastball at a batters ribs but if a batter retaliates by whirlybirding a bat at the pitcher he should be hung by the neck.  I never understood the logic that it is acceptable to bean a defenseless batter.  I don't agree with what Juan Marichal did but there has to be harsher penalties for pitchers.

We have now reached the point where the team is not only unwatchable but EMBARRASSING. Would it kill Terry to let Edgin face more than one batter? Brewers did everything in their power to give this one away. Torres had NOTHING that second inning. It would be easy to blame Flores for the weak ground ball but the guy sits on the bench four games out of five. You can almost hear the exasperation in the voices of the Met announcers.

WOWE! Who is going to be the first to say "Trade Me". I'm betting Neise. And I can't blame him if he does.

Why pinch hit for Abreu in a close game???  He does not have large platoon splits in his career, his defense is adequate, his arm is the best on the active roster (Granderson has a second baseman's arm and does not belong in RF ever; EVER), and burning a versatile bat like Campbell there for a righty/lefty is idiotic.  As is burning the crap out of Torres who will pitch until his arm falls off and then use the other arm to pitch some more.  He's a gamer's gamer, and Collins is using that to his and the team's DISadvantage, which is hard to do!

I don't generally blame the manager when a team struggles, and they continue to play hard for him, but Collins is a pretty awful game tactician.

Bottom line - the team that can get hits can win the game. The team that hits home runs can win the game. Walking and working the pitcher is great, if the players can also hit the ball and get on base. This is the big problem with the Mets - their philosophy is solid, but getting hits has to factor into the equation. And I always supported Terry, but it's gotten ridiculous. At the ballpark last night, when Niese came out everyone was saying that Terry was going to burn through the bullpen, and that's what happened. Poor strategy, poorly constructed line-up...Ugh, we're all saying the same thing, and no one's listening.

The Mets had a contest where a fan guessed when a homerun would be hit in what inning. They should have a contest where the fan has to guess what game The Mets would get a hit.

If TC would suicide squeeze every 100 years he would have another 9 wins.   Last night was the perfect time.  He is so awful in game situations and fundamentals that it is sickening.  the game is 50 years past him.

How can you give the game ball to Niese if the METS didn't win?

Highlight of The Week:

When the camera turned to Neise when Collins came out of the dugout in the 8th and said:

"What the Eff is going on?"

T.C. is burning out Carlos Torres.  He's such a good reliever but he lets him pitch every night.  Total mis-management of the bullpen.  Sandy is to blame for putting together these unwatchable bunch of loser!!  The Wilpons need to get there head out of there ass and realize this.  IDIOTS!

Aaaaaannnd this team hasn't been watchable for the last month and a half.

George Komninakis

If Alderson and the Wilpons are this dumb to understand that Collins is setting back the team from rebuilding they need to find new professions.   Collins has destroyed Flores by not playing him every day.  He received a hot Campbell and Captain Kirk from triple a and never played them either.. Campbell lost his rhythm, Kirk was sent back down, Den Dekker who was not nearly as hot as the other 2 in triple a was called up, and he is playing every day despite the fact he can't hit.  He has lost Wheeler and now Niese. He has completely abused Torres.  He is in the process of abusing Mejia and Familliia.   He has no clue how to use Edgin or his bench.  He is a very dark black cloud on this team and he needs to be fired before tonights game!!

It is like watching a cat play with a mouse it caught. There is a little attempt to escape, there is some batting around by the predator (in this case every other MLB team). It is mean spirited playfulness, but everyone knows the final outcome.

It was clear that the Brewers knew the best way to beat us was to playfully let us load the bases, knowing full well that bases full is Met's kryptonite. They even let us struggle one last time getting out of a 1st & 3rd, one out, knowing full well we were weak and unable to sustain another assault.

I am getting real tired of these professional team toying with my Mets! We really don't have the capability or capacity to compete. Isn't it time the Wilpons were given a pass? They are business men and don't invest in losing propositions. The faux commissioner thinks they are great.

We are so screwed!!

Ps: great pitching by Jon and the pen. Torres got overused and lit up, but he is solid.

Please stop running Lucas Duda and Chris Young out there everyday. They stink. They cannot play. Play Campbell and Brown, they cannot possibly do any worse.  Release those other 2 clowns. Enough is enough already with those two.

a lot of the usual Mets bashing but the Brewers with all their talent was also held to one run until an overworked Torres in his second inning of work gave up a couple of hits and the end came ... it's games like this where there is hope if they get a couple bats.

Like the gambler who says "I'm almost there ...."

Collins needs to be fired this morning!   He lost all respect this week from Wheeler, Niese. He also doesn't understand how to use his bench and bullpen.

This team is just a sad a tragic par of the saga of the Wilpons. I hope the stadium is empty all year. maybe that will send he only message they will understand. Sandy Alderson has done a horrible job. Frank Francisco,Chris Young and a non existant offense. No letter of loyalty is needed for this team. Wins and a good team will bring the fans back

I don't watch complete games anymore, and soon I'll be watching none of them. Reading about the prior nights loss every morning and subsequently these comments is all I got left. When TC goes,...I'll be back full time for awhile,.... but not until then,...

Steven Desai

This offense is horrible. The base running blunders are ridiculously laughable and sad ... And the infield defense is worse than garbage. And what exactly does Terry Collins have against Torre's arm? He's about to Feliciano him.

I said this when they stupidly gave Chris Young that $7 mil. that was dumb for a team that was tight budgeted. But of course, making 7mil gets you to automatically become the middle of the order guy. I'm not as old as the ones that have seen the 86 Mets, which I'm sure was amazing. I'd take the 06' Mets. At least their middle of the order actually were real MLB hitters that drove in runs.

This team should already be preparing to make the transition from awful to at least a decent team. This is NOT a decent team, it's a team that has shown no fundamentals and a lack of mental toughness.

But Alderson and the rest of Ownership can keep continuing to put the blame on US for not bowing down to their feet and heaping praises on the team that have brought us the last couple of years of mediocrity and a bunch of players that enjoy making excuses and playing losing baseball.

@jonbench Possibly because (statistically speaking) a whirling, spinning, flying bat can cause more damage than a baseball following a more or less linear trajectory.

@Kenneth Meltsner "We have now reached"?? That's funny -- but I agree with you; I'm hearing a lot more passive/aggressiveness in Gary, Keith, and Ron's voices these days.

D

@Steve Musicant I don't see them continuing to play hard for Terry... if anything, they play hard for themselves and for their own livelihood....

I DO see them continue to play poor fundamental baseball and make the same poor base running mistakes over and over.  I DO see some ridiculuos in-game decisions, I DO see major bullpen mismanagement, and I certainly DO see him super glue young players to the bench over and over for days on end.  THAT is on the manager

@Kevin John Because he pitched really well and we feel really, really good about him going forward. Next question?

@Steven Desai Steve I not only remember 86 I can remember 69 . I have been watching this team since 1964. I cannot remember any of those teams, as bad as some of them were, that was as bad as this one is with clutch hitting. These guys are the least motivated set of losers I have ever seen in orange and blue. Some of the other teams had less talent but none less heart.
