Game Recap: Braves 3, Mets 1

Result: The Mets’ bats went mostly silent on Thursday, as they lost to the Braves by the score of 3-1 at Citi Field.

Need to Know: Bartolo Colon‘s first inning struggles continued, as he gave up an RBI double to Freddie Freeman and a bloop RBI single to Jason Heyward as the Braves took an early 2-0 lead. In the third, the Braves extended their lead to 3-0 on a double play ground out, but the Mets got that run back in the bottom half of the inning when a David Wright RBI single drew them within 3-1. Colon shut the Braves down after his early trouble and pitched into the eighth, but the Mets couldn’t muster much against Braves starter Aaron Harang during his seven innings of work. The Mets threatened in the bottom of the eighth, but Craig Kimbrel was called on and recorded the final out with runners on first and second. Kimbrel then secured the victory for Atlanta in the ninth.

Game Ball: Harang of Atlanta, who kept the Mets off balance during seven innings of one-run ball.

Am I the only one that doesn't understand why it's so difficult to hit Aaron Harang???

Anyone else get tired of seeing journeyman pitchers look like Sandy Freaking Koufax against the Mets?

This offense is so frustrating. Harang is woeful.  1 run is a joke.

It doesn't matter what Bartolo didn't do right early on in the game. The offense was held at bay by Harang. No matter overall our guys did great in this series. Lets filet the Fish to start another winning series. . . . Lets Go Mets!

Mets go on a 4 game winning streak, take 3 of 4 from Atlanta and people are still complaining.  Nice, mets fans.

Wilmer Flores at it again. Last night he was 3-5 with another HR and 5 RBI

It's a shame if this team had a little more offense we would sustain longer winning streaks, such a poor job by sandy and so very difficult to watch

time to trade bartolo....ceiling starting to cave in on him.......

I knew we were gonna lose to once I saw colon was batting 8th. I couldn't believe that one when I saw it. What a buffoon.

It's gotten to the point where Colon's starts are games I don't look forward to.

Alvarez has pitched brilliant lately, especially against us.

But wheeler has also, but this marlins lineup has given us problems every now and again.

A sweep would be good but I'll be content with 2 out of 3

PS he can steal 2nd as a PR, if you want him playing everyday then trade Murphy for as much as you can get and let EY play 2B, I just don't see the love affair with a gut no other team wants hitting .230 with a obp of .313

semperfi
semperfi

I find it amusing when a .240 hitter continues to get starts over someone hitting .340, EY could not hit .340 in the minors, he has a .313 obp and has a .330 career slugging pct, enough with the EY man crush

theglider

I find it amusing when fans on here bash EY and wonder aloud why he was playing when, after all, he got on, stole second and scored our only run. So maybe, just maybe, he wasn't the issue in this game.

@Eddie_Dean Especially after the Mets had him. Never ceases to amaze me when pitchers especially leave the Mets and get better!

@Eddie_Dean  Yup,most pitchers are made to look like Koufax against us

ShawnP

@nashbo  Think it's just more of being disappointed cause we had ATL around the jugular. Also,Colon pitched another fine game, but this offense most nights can not come back from a 3 run deficit.

ShawnP

@Doubleday  Dang,he really is tearing it up down there.I know its Vegas, but half the games are away so cant completely say it's cause of the band-box in Vegas.

These guys in AAA still throw hard and can throw knee-buckling curve balls so,no real excuses as to why he's tearing it up other than the dude can obviously rake when he's getting regular playing time and not sitting on the pine at Citi.

@Carlos Rivera He totally misread the market.  He could have had Nelson Cruz for roughly the same $$ as CY but he didn't want to wait on it.

@cyjabeli  Why is the sky falling in on Bartolo??He pitched a great game by any "good"teams standards. He kept us right in the ballgame.

If anything,it was definitely the offense that lost this game for us,not Bart.

@cyjabeli Yes that 8 inning effort against one of the leading teams of the NL was so subpar.

ShawnP
ShawnP

@Dave D'Agnese  The real "buffoon"was the mental midget TC,he's the one that constructed that ridiculous conclusion of batting Bartolo 8th.

Joe Paulson

@Tormented Mets Fan winning teams manage to win when their starter gives them 8 innings of three run ball more chances than not but then the wicked Aaron Harang is a tough one.

@Tormented Mets Fan Huh? Colon has had a couple of bumps lately but he's been the most consistent Mets pitcher this year. It's actually a treat watching his resilience every game. He might give up a run or two early but then he stabilizes the ship.

@semperfi please no - during the first series of the year when Murphy wasn't available EY was a butcher at second.  If you think Murphy is bad at turning a double play EY is even worse.

@theglider or maybe just maybe cambell hits a homerun tonight

@theglider I find it amusing you keep defending a 4th outfielder/pinch runner.  Speed is over rated - name me one World Series winner over the past 10 years that relied on speed much.

@Chris Kujawa One of the most baffling managerial moves EVER!!!.

Bases empty---- if EY is Anything,  he's a table setter. The fact is that the game could have been tied that inning,  and you'd have depleted the bench for a meaningless pinch hitter(CY),

The "move" cannot be explained.

@Chris Kujawa TC was going with his gut like Willie Randolph:(  Hey, he almost hit it out.  They'd be better off hitting him out of town.

It would have been oh so sweet for us to sweep the Br*ves and it was important.  Even though Atl lost those first 3 games, they won the one that really counted, as they nearly always do, at least against us.  The Mets showed some life in this series - probably just a big tease.  Winning or losing 2 out of 3 against the Marlins won't mean so much either way, but if either team sweeps, going into the break will either show a tiny bit of promise or leave a real bad taste in our mouths.  If memory serves me correctly, we totally fell apart before the last All Star Break.  We actually did this year too, except for this series and if we got swept by the Marlins, it would be pretty much a repeat of the end of the first half from last season, albeit with a slightly different twist.  As TC said, this homestand is really huge, well as huge as things can be for us, considering how much we have to improve to get to contention.

@Chris Kujawa 2-3 against the best closer in baseball. and on top of that 0 ks. plus he waited one second and that ball would have been in the accela club

@ShawnP @Eddie_Dean While that's true, sometimes it just feels like they do better against good pitchers, but guys like Harang who you'd think they could score some runs against just rise up and dominate them. I mean, they knocked out Julio Teheran in the 4th inning the other night, but Aaron Harang they might as well be wearing blindfolds against?

mrgee
mrgee

@ShawnP @Doubleday  Sure, it is just Vegas, but then again, TDA tore it up down there, came back up, and he has been doing nothing but raking ever since.  So who knows, maybe Flores really has turned it back on. Too bad we may never find out...

mrgee
mrgee

@Steve Finelli @Carlos Rivera  Cruz was never signing here. Cruz was going to sign in a bandbox for one year to boost his numbers.  That is not Citi Field, as I'm sure you are aware.

Tormented Mets Fan

Yes, last night he only gave up 3 runs, and we had chances to bail him out, but he's had better starts.

And for whatever reason Aaron Harang is Sandy Koufax to us.

Loose the Youngs and TC, replace with Wally and whoever he wants to bring with him from Vegas, TC manages like a Little League Coach

@kingman76 Well, the World Series winner last year had the league leader in steals on their team.....

Except tonight is not the night to focus on him. He did his job.

@Eric Raffle He makes no sense if CY has such good numbers wait till someone is on or he should have used him in the 8th. If we were down by 1 I would understand the move. Terry just manages poorly. Sometimes it costs a game sometimes it has no effect. But he never wins a game.

ShawnP

@Eddie_Dean @ShawnP  That's no lie.

Look how we roughed up the A's and Kazmir recently.

Its mind boggling.

Carlos Rivera

agreed but you have to admit he would hit 20-25 at Citi Field and certainly give us more than CY and would have added some more protection for Dwright and grandy

ShawnP

@mrgee @Steve Finelli @Carlos Rivera  How many HR's does Cruz have now?Havent checked in on him in a minute.

I agree though. There was no possible way Cruz was coming here.I know we all wish this had happened, but it just never was going to happen.

Bryd is a different story,he wanted to come back with the Mets and AldyFraud could have for sure made it happen.Guess he didn't think the "lightning in the bottle"thing could happen twice.

He definitely missed the bus on that one IMO.

tom25

@theglider Yes, but people are tired of watching a bad baseball player get even semi-regular playing time.

ShawnP
ShawnP

@Carlos Rivera  Absolutely,Carlos.

Don't get me wrong,I would LOVE to see Cruz in this line up.No doubt he still would of hit a respectable amount of HR's.

But,Sandy's love affair with CY is undeniable and ever lasting.
