Game Recap: Angels 5 – Mets 4

Jeurys Familia, on pitch No. 51 — in his third inning of work — hit Hank Conger with the bases loaded to force in the winning run to help the Angels beat the Mets 5-4 in 11 innings on Friday night. >> For the full recap, visit SNY.TV.

Need to Know: Familia worked two innings of shutout baseball before coming out for a third inning, and gave up a leadoff hit. The Mets eventually walked the bases loaded before he plunked Conger to end the game.

Dillon Gee allowed four earned runs, battling through 5 2/3 innings. He allowed six hits, walked four and struck out five. He allowed two home runs, including a solo home run to Mike Trout in the first inning.

Every Mets starter had a hit, including Travis d’Arnaud, who hit his first home run of the season, a solo shot in the third inning. Josh Satin hit a two-run double in the fourth inning, but that was the last the Mets would get on the board.

Mets pitchers walked 10 batters.

What’s Next: The Mets and Angels play Saturday night, a 9 p.m. start.

David Wrigth's done nothing in 3 years. Not a number 3 hitter.Just pitch him low and away ,he misses ball by foot

I honestly can't get too upset about the loss (not what I was thinking at 2AM last night). We almost threw the game away several times before we did (I think I saw Scott Schowenweiss) do something eerily similar a few years back. Deja-vu all over again. Questionable but of strategy by TC. Familia was having control issues all night. You could practically SEE him choking the ball. The guy throws 97 but couldn't seem to strike anyone out. Also obvious that there is zero confidence in Lannan (who would have been the next guy out there). And if that's the case, why is he here? We should take solace in the fact that the team has been in every game (save one) this season.

ok so i've read all the posts here...

The loss is on TC.  ANYONE paying attention can see that Gee, on most starts, can't go past 85-90 pitches. That's before and since his surgery.  In this game alone Gee started losing it in the 5th, when he started to falter in the 6th it wasn't Warthen that was supposed to make the visit, it was TC.  If TC wants to say he needed to learn what Gee could do for the future.  Ok.  But that excuse only works once. It cost the Mets 1 game in April...it should not cost them any future games.

Familia was on a 3rd inning of relief.  He fought his control all night and STILL put up 2 SO innings.  Leave him alone.  TC sacrificed him because the team has 2 more games to play, jetlagged, fatigued, whatever.  I don't agree with it but i get why it happened.  My issue is, if you were trying to WIN the game by using Familia over Lannan, why didn't you pull Gee earlier, rather than later?  TC did you only want to fight to win the game, when you thought you were going to lose it?

Last thing:  I get walking Kendrick....but why walk Shuck with 1 out? The DP is in play already, and Ibanez is not Billy Hamilton.  You ostensibly painted Familia into a 6 x 6 box and then told him to escape without getting paint on him.

I'm not usually big on beating up managers, but this one is squarely on TC

I just keep hoping that Familia will learn to command his stuff but he never does, honestly I'm sick of waiting around for this guy he needs to get sent back to the minors, it's too much.

Terry Collins has worn out his welcome 4 times over for me, everyone and their mother knows Familia has control issues (hell, the entire staff does) so why make it a 4 pitch game instead of a potential 8 pitch game...poor managing again....is it Wally time yet ?

It's a great team. Makes you proud to be a Mets fan. Most of the team can't hit...ah, the lovely scent of another losing season. Hopefully no one shows up to Citi Field and the Wilpons find themselves forced to sell the team.

Why exactly were two guys walked? One walk sets up the dp if you play middle back, and he can still go for the k. That was a pretty odd call.

its a world of five inning pitchers now ... maybe result of counting pitches and innings from little league on, but its fact.

our bullpen was great last night, including Familia, but bullpen use has got to be restructured, either make it bigger or piggyback starters. these guys are going to burn out quickly.

O gotta help these guys out ... score some runs already!

I wouldn't let Familia pitch to a troupe of dyslexic 4 year old girl scouts; as they could singlehandedly out-perform him, if they were all blindfolded, with their hands tied behind their backs.
AND, Collins intentionally loading the bases with Familia ("Stevie Wonder Wannabe") pitching?
Get rid of Collins; as I have always suspected that his agenda is to destroy the Mets chances, as soon as possible, into each season - by making monitory bets against his team???? - WHY does he do that????

Peter Ramirez
Peter Ramirez

Can someone please tell me why Familia was called upon to pitch a third inning of work? Was our bullpen really THAT depleted by the 11th inning? This reeks of yet another Terry Collins managing blunder, which would not be surprising in the least.

I sincerely do hope that by the time this ballclub becomes competitive, we will have moved on to a more capable manager. Simply put, we cannot win a WS, let alone consecutive playoff series, with this man at the helm. These types of managerial mistakes are fine during the regular season as they can (for the most part) be easily overcome through talent and performance, but all of that changes once you reach the playoffs. I'm talking about mistakes in the general sense of course, as tonight's result may not fall directly on Terry's shoulders.

Infuriating way to lose, but as many posters stated, this offense is woeful.  Thanks, Sandy.  Thanks, Fred.

Terry Collins is no MLB manager......should be in the office looking at the forth coming baseball draft........if that!

10 walks. Surprised the game was even close. Aside from the wins and losses which will start to shine through soon, the numbers are abysmal for this team.

Brandon Hillman

3rd gee start in a row that gee looses it after 90 pitches. It's almost automatic. And again team is 0 and 3 when he pitches. That is on TC not recognizing to take him out. Era for gee 5.0. He is not that good. Should have been traded after strong second half. They want Montero to pitch out of bullpen when he should be given a chance to start. Look how many innings he has loged at AAA. It's time to see what he can do at mlb level.

please save the " oo familia looks promising" .. familia sucks ok throwin 97 means nothing... this sums up familia that he threw about 50 fastballs at about 97 mph.. threw 2 sliders and both were hits

In the seven games since being named "starter," Duda has been on the bench at first pitch in three of them, as the third guy started at 1B in three nights.

So he's on pace to start 92 games.

But, heck, he and Ike got in, anyway.  This may be the new solution: use all three guys every game.  Makes as much sense as what they're doing now, anyways.

Seriously? The guy is the consummate professional and faces the toughest pitches of the game. Every team knows he's THE guy. Get over it.

That's a great analysis there. Get on the one decent bat in the lineup cause he didn't get a hit when you wanted.

BringBackDaveTelghe

Such a clown, at least look at a box score before complaining. They were down to just Valverde in the pen and that's it.

If TC brings in Wheeler for an inning on his throw day he's probably fired the next morning.

@greekgod Collins should be selling cotton candy, in the stands; as that actually might be something that he couldn't actually mess up.

Jerry Colfer

It is hard to fault the pen. TC should have pulled him (bad move). Problem is the offense is just not clickingg TDA is showing flashes and grandy is struggling.

ericccb

@Chris Lyons  Agreed. Famailia also intentionally walked the 2 previous batters before the HBP. Being forced to throw 8 consecutive balls followed by trying to find the strike zone? I think a new pitcher shouldve been inserted in the game.

stemog

@mi Which means he's a one-inning reliever, that's all. P.S. To some of you guys, everyone on the team sucks as soon as they make a mistake. Guess what, it's gonna keep happening ... on every team.

He's still in a platoon, obviously. As well he should be.

Keep blaming managers. I guarantee whoever you bring in will find themselves in the same situations. If you can't get 6 innings out of a starter, and you can't scratch a few more runs against the mediocre Angels pitching, I don't care who the manager is. I have no attachment to Collins. I'm not a fan of his, but I'm not stupid enough to blame him every time they lose. Familia is a major league pitcher, or at least that's what he's pretending to be. If he walks Conger instead of hitting him, what happens next? John Lannan time? Or should they burn through Valverde too. Until Wright and Granderson start coming up with big hits it's going to be very hard to win games. I wish it was as easy as changing managers

Never wanted Upton. Way overrated. As far as I know, none of the Cuban or Japanese players had MLB experience before being signed. Sometimes you just gotta roll the dice.

maybe thats it ... does it matter why? this is situation, we have 6 inning starters. be proactive Mets, and change bullpen business as usual.

@BringBackDaveTelghe they still had good ol' John Lannan they should have put him in to blow it.... Still don't get why they walked two straight guys though.

@ericccb @Chris Lyons

I believe he was ORDERED to INTENTIONALLY walk BOTH of them, actually, UN-believably! Remember the last time the Mets were in Anaheim, the 3AM 'call to the managerial bullpen? (Willie Randolf-firing!)

@stemog Yep, you're absolutely right.

I'm so close to just giving up on comments.  The amount of irrational clowns on the site now doesn't even make it fun anymore.

@stemog  do you understand you cant get major league hitters out with just throwing a fastball that you cant locate with no other off speed pitches?? when you throw 50 fastballs ina row at almost 100 mph and than throw 1 slider and it gets roped back up the middle you arent fooling anyone

@lindro88

My friend, you are right on the money with this assessment. All gets down to the players that our genius GM puts on the field.

Faisal Hashmi
Faisal Hashmi

@lindro88 actually I agreed with you on leaving Gee earlier... I thought Gee really need to grow as a pitcher and get over the hump and TC was correct to leave him in there.. but I think 3rd inning was little too much for Familia there. He was out of his normal role and TC should have gone with Lennan... I mean I know he has sucked so far but he is on your roster he needs to pitch there. Whats the point of having a long relief guy if you aren't going use him

lindro88
lindro88

Wright will hit. My point is about people constantly blaming Collins.

Faisal Hashmi
Faisal Hashmi

@lindro88 I agree its a long season and it would be stupid to fire TC right now... I was making a joke about willie getting fired at 3am last time Mets were in Orange County... saying that I have no faith in TC to lead a better team to anywhere, I just dont think he is a very good in game manager.

lindro88
lindro88

Lannan shouldn't be on the roster. He's not a reliever. He's not tough on lefty's. Bring up another arm. If Lannan starts that inning the game ends quicker. Thats the only difference. Than you get posts asking "why would Collins put Lannan in that game...he sucks!" It's 10 games into the season. The pen is not a finished product, but clearly Collins has no faith in Lannan. Its up to his GM to get him another arm. The bigger issue is the offense. I'm encouraged by TDA starting to show something. Now the few big names have to get on track. I think they will. Curtis Granderson isn't intimidated by playing in NY. Wright hasn't lost his ability. It's just a loss. Tomorrow they face Weaver, who has been terrible. He tops out at 88 or so and should be very hittable.
