Game 2 Recap: Mets 4, Diamondbacks 2

In the second game of Sunday’s doubleheader at Citi Field the Mets (22-27) defeated the Diamondbacks (20-32) by the score of 4-2 >> Read the full recap and box score at SNY.tv.

Need to Know: Daisuke Matsuzaka made the spot-start for the Mets and tossed six solid innings. He allowed two runs on three hits, walked one and struck out six.

The Diamondbacks took a 2-0 lead in the second. With a runner on first, Bobby Abreu misplayed a Martin Prado hit off the sidewall down the right field line, resulting in a run scoring and Prado winding up at third base. An RBI ground out with the infield back then brought in the second run.

In the bottom of the second, the Mets cut the lead to 2-1 when Daisuke Matsuzaka delivered a broken-bat RBI single with two outs.

Bobby Abreu delivered an RBI double to left to make it 2-2 in the fifth.

After Anthony Recker led off the sixth with a double, Ruben Tejada hit a pinch-hit RBI single to give the Mets a 3-2 lead.

The Mets added an insurance run in the eighth when Daniel Murhpy ripped an RBI single to center to make it 4-2.

Carlos Torres, Josh Edgin, and Jeurys Familia combined to toss two scoreless innings in relief.

Jenrry Mejia, who pitched an inning and took the hard-luck loss in the first game of the doubleheader, earned the save.

Anthony Recker had four hits for the first time in his career.

Eric Campbell started at first base and Curtis Granderson played left field to accommodate Bobby Abreu, who started in right field.

What’s Next: The Mets open a three-game series with the Pirates on Monday afternoon at Citi Field at 1:10 p.m. Jacob deGrom (0-2, 2.77 ERA) will make his third big league start for the Mets. He’ll be opposed by Brandon Cumpton (0-1, 4.26 ERA) for Pittsburgh.

If we can't beat AZ two of three at home, we need some serious changes, but a 40 yr old at 1B definitely is not one of them. We won't find answers to our offensive woes by just juggling the players we have. We need help from the outside.

Willie Mays played a little first base at the end of his career.  I like Bobby Abreu, but he is no Willie Mays.

$10 says CY Duda and Tejada play tomorrow

The good: This team has some solid young arms with upside who just need game time experience. The bad: Obviously Duda and Young. TD just needs more time imo. We've seen enough of Duda now, as he watches good pitches go by and when he get one to hit he misses. If you watch baseball long enough, youknow he isn't close to becoming anything special. May be wise to give Dykstra a shot to see what we have. If that fails then next year the team needs to go get a first baseman. They could of had Morneau for the cheap.... Alderson erred and gave Cy and Bartolo the little money the Wilpons have.

den dekker is nothing more than a AAAA player. People saying that he should start over Lagares are ridiculous.

This is a good exercise, lately we the fans have had very few things to talk about it with the results the Team is having, very different from April, However, lets be realistic Abreu cannot play First, Flores neither can't SS. But in looking for improve its ok to play Flores at short is a better bat than Tejada and is decent defensively. Abreu is not even adequate in outfield but we need a bat of influence with some consistency in line-up he can be the answer. CY should play he has maybe the better power of all Mets player. If the mgmt have kept Duda in first because he is a power hitter why not keep CY who is more atletic in the lineup waiting for a miracle that he starts hitting, He can also help defensively he is very good at it. Campbell should be given an opportunity in first he is showing some talent. Why not?

When Murphys going right and not tanking it, looks like we have at least one hitter that appears professional enough to want to watch hit.

So after reading some of these posts what I've taken from all this is:

Some people want to play Abreu at first where he has never played before.

Some people want den Dekker to take over center from Lagares.

Some people want to play CY, Abreu, Campbell, Lagares and Granderson in the outfield. Apparently all at the same time.

So I'm thinking the fans might be another problem for the Mets.

Antonino Plaud

It is curious some people in here defends a player of their like. Some abnegating defends Lagares arguing his defensive skills, On the other hand attacks Tejada for his lack of power, not hitting etc. negaring the fact he is an excellent defensive SS. Who understands people Sancho?

IMHO I wish to see Den Decker playing some CFr. cause in my book he has a superior ceiling than Laggy.

TC plans to play Duda at 1st and possibly Abreau in the OF. It makes sense, because playing Campbell and den Decker is too obvious.

Lucas Duda is the most worthless player in the major leagues......He is so pathetic........just because we pay him the minimum salary doesn't mean he should play.

this team is utterly garbage. there is just zero direction and its so numbing.

@sayhey24 You're right...like moving the deck chairs around on the Titanic

Leif Granlind

You know you have a bad first baseman when you want a 40 year old or a practically unseen minor leaguer to replace him.

He's miles better defensively. But i think Nieuwenhuis might be hurt, so it's a moot point.

11gilkey

He also can't catch. Trade him to an AL team. He's horrific in the field and and on the base paths

Abreu and CY stink...that's a given; Deckker should take over for CY and Campbell for DUD at first base.  The outfield should be improved offensively and defensively now that GRANDERSON is starting to hit a little.  Travis needs to hit his head against the wall so he can stay out longer...like RECKER's offense and he's adequate behind the plate.  Don't know if this kid will ever reach the potential we all assumed he had.  Kirk stinks and should remain in the minors as a life sentence...everytime they bring him up he has one good game then dissappears.  Tired of repeating myself on this blog...we have some serious managerial issues.

Seriously. I hope you are drunk. That is complete and utter drivel.

I read that too. That's nuts. Will never happen.

@Antonino Plaud He's lefty, and until a power hitter shows it can be done consistently here, might as well go for gap hitters, preferable with speed.

Jerry Colfer
Jerry Colfer

You are right that he has similar defensive skills, speed and has hit decent at every level. I am with you.

Is a lefty pitching or a righty?

George Komninakis
George Komninakis

@Kevin Connelly i don't agree.  our starting pitching is good and will be lights out when Harvey and Noah come.  Our pen looks to have been solidified with Mejia as our closer and possibly Famillia as our set up guy.  Wright, Granderson, Lagarese, Murphy  are a nice core.  Flores will be fine as well...  that leaves lf, 1st base and catcher.   Lets forget catcher for now and address 1st base and lf and we can be very good.

Actually just checked the Vegas box score today and Kirk played (had 4 ABs). He had played well for the Mets when he got called up earlier, so it's interesting that den dekker is getting the call now. Maybe it's a player options issue.

Richard Alicea
Richard Alicea

Again, Kirk has one good game and then disappears...he joins CY in the abysss; not a good option...he's a minor league player at best.  Dekker will take over for the stiff CY.

Richard Alicea

all likelihood they will miss their target...some of the players can't even hit a softball thrown at 10 miles an hour...sad!

That's when you miss the talent of a Jose Reyes in that park :/

Richard Alicea

Not really I believe he's over the hump, but he should go straight to LF and replace the stiff...LAGARES is our guy in CF and that shouldn't change!

@theglider Yes cause a career outfielder has no problem going to play firstbase. Just ask Beltran who was praying a groundball never came his way. If I remember correctly, some people on here were also asking for them to play Alou at firstbase too. Another career outfielder who never played an infield position in his life. It's amazing how some people think firstbase is so easy to play, just catch throws. SMH

@George Komninakis an average team wouldve swept this miserable arizona team coming across the country this weekend. mets almost got swept.

They both suck and neither guy can hit at the major league level.

@cbbruuno I'm not arguing. I said Lagares is better at his position, just like you did, before you did. Maybe you meant to direct that at Plaud.

Antonino Plaud
Antonino Plaud

@cmetsfan So now you are getting alittle technical. Can you allow me to say then that Tejadsa is a better (not better) much better hitter than Lagares is?

cbbruuno
cbbruuno

@cmetsfan Lagares is a much better CF than Tejada is a SS. Also, Lagares is hitting 100 points higher than Tejada. This is a strange argument on your part.

cmetsfan
cmetsfan

@Antonino Plaud No it's not like Don Quijote.

When Tejada stays within himself, he's okay, but he seems to get fatigued after a few days at the position.

Lagares is a better centerfielder  than Tejada is a shortstop.

Some players play beneath their ability level some games, but it's probably more of a business   thing than thematic.

C.K. Dexter Haven
C.K. Dexter Haven

@Steven Matregrano  That's not actually accurate.  Lagares had  the play of the week last week on MLB Network (HR rob).  People outside of Met nation know about Lagares.  But besides that...Lagares is no longer the future for the Mets at the position?  We certainly have become a fickle bunch...

@Kevin Connelly @George Komninakis They need a 1B, SS, LF...and don't expect payroll to increase next year. I don't care how good the starting pitching is, they can't hit. It didn't have to be this way. The team sux.
