Game 1 Recap: Diamondbacks 2, Mets 1

In the first game of Sunday’s doubleheader at Citi Field, the Mets (21-27) lost to the Diamondbacks (20-31) by the score of 2-1 >> Read the full recap and box score at SNY.tv.

Need to Know: Rafael Montero made his third career start and turned in his best performance as a major leaguer. Montero allowed one run on two hits in six innings of work. He walked three and struck out 10. During the start, Montero at times flashed the pinpoint command he was known for during his minor league career. Montero started the sixth inning at 102 pitches, and retired the side in order to end his outing.

Chris Owings delivered a solo home run to give Arizona a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Mets came back to score a run of their own on a David Wright RBI single in the bottom half to tie things up.

The game remained tied until the top of the ninth, when the Mets gifted Arizona what turned out to be the winning run. After a leadoff double that was hit past Bobby Abreu in right field, it appeared that Jenrry Mejia had escaped a jam when he induced a grounder to David Wright with runners on first and third and two outs. However, Daniel Murphy dropped the would-be inning ending force at second base as the Diamondbacks took a 2-1 lead.

The Mets got consecutive singles with one out in the ninth to put runners on first and second, but Juan Lagares struck out looking and Daniel Murphy flew out to shallow left to end the game.

Chris Young continues to struggle at the plate. He went 0-for-3 and is now 7 for his last 53. He was lifted for pinch-hitter Bobby Abreu late in the game.

The Mets wasted lots of scoring chances, hitting into double plays in the second, third, fourth, sixth, and eighth inning. Overall, the Mets went 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position.

What’s Next: The Mets play the second game of today’s doubleheader later on Sunday afternoon. Daisuke Matsuzaka (1-0, 2.14 ERA) makes a spot-start for the Mets. He’ll be opposed by Zeke Spruill, who was called up from Triple-A to make his 2014 debut for Arizona.

Daniel Murphy makes Ken Boswell look like Orlando Hudson.

Dice K  is a true pro..has done everything the Mets have asked with no complaints at a low salary...and he has done it well

Nice game (Finally).  Nice performance by Dice-K.  If Bartolo ever comes down with oh, maybe a gastric issue, I have no qualms about putting Matsuzaka in the rotation.

C'mon Mejia--strike this guy out. Please keep the pitches low. No dingers!

I want Mejia to be their closer, but I do worry about pitching him twice in one day after being a reliever for 2 weeks. Not too worried about today, it's to week or two from now.

Mejia the new closing machine

Wow Duda 0-13 and has left FIFTEEN men on base in the last three games. And I know sooner or later he'll hit another mammoth homer but I would start Campbell at first.

2 on 1 out for the Mets is the surest way to an end of an inning.

Meija should be fine with a 2 run cushion

For Eric and other Wright haters some stats.

He's batting .292 with runners in scoring position. .314 with men on base.

With men on first and second .545 and .538 with a man on third and less than two out.

And he's hitting .359 in tie games and .321 when it's a one run game.

Typical wright walking in the 8th, never does anything from the 7th on lol

I tried to catch a few innings of the twin bill and just got bored. Like watching grinding wheels in the mud. No juice.

Well Eric, since you either missed the question or ran off again I'll ask about David Wright...

What's he hitting with men on? Runners in scoring position? A tie game or a one run game? Please tell us.Edit (in 5 minutes)

I would start a 85 year old senior at a nursing home over Duda

All that info is meaningless to my post. If you recall I said , Wright is a good hitter except with 2 out and runners in scoring position. All you did is support my assertion with your stats. Thank you.

.054, 2 out, runners in scoring position, you know, clutch situations.

@Tormented Mets Fan Good question. I think TC is desperate for a win and wants to go with what he knows (which isn't much). I'd be shocked if Valverde pitches the 9th, but then again, this is Terry, so who knows?

Last game he drove in their only run. Or do those runs not matter?

theglider
theglider

He's had 18 at bats in those situations and 176 at bats in tied or one run games. Which sample size actuallyeans something?

@Victor Triguero @Steven Matregrano I agree I don't trust them either.  Now we are going to face 3 teams we are suppose to beat but we will lose 2 out of 3 to them.  Guaranteed!  This team is bad Sandy should be fired for putting this team together.  I will not be watching the boring Mets team this week.  They are not worth it

But you don't have the answers to what I asked? It's not very difficult. I'll ask one. What is he hitting in tied games? That's pretty simple.

eric88

Shut your pie hole, the guy sucks late when it's clutch time. Get over it.

I asked you for stats. You were quick to tell us one but left out the others.
