Why was Parnell closing at 89-92 on his fastball. Why is he not on the DL?

the mets scored more than enough to win.clearly they have a really bad pen.  period.  lost of late game losses are in the offing.

Listen we can point fingers at the hitting but we had the lead in the 9th and guess what the bullpen blew it. enough is enough

Wish we had gotten Norichika Aoki so I would never have to hear EYJ's name again from TC...If we had gotten him this team would probably look different at 3 other positions and a domino effect of a couple trades would have happened, but instead...Sandy was stagnant...All holes we knew we had going into the offseason were never addressed...

Im ok with Grandy he will give this team 100 runs, Yes he strikes out alot but lets face it this is a team that hasnt had another 100 run guy in years only Wright has been the only player

Lay off Granderson. He's something we don't have to worry about right now. The same scared mentality is the problem. It looked like the same Nats vs. Mets game from last year. A better Nats team just putting the Mets in a tough spot late in the game and forcing the Mets into a "here comes a strike" corner. Ball game.

Changing the loser mentality of this team is going to be the hardest challenge. And in some way it starts with the fans...

Granderson? Really? Let's not help him turn into Bay. Maybe there's a reason guys suck when they come here. Maybe it's because of the S storm that flies up from everywhere constantly and makes normal bad times prolonged and generally worse.

Also bring up Socolovich and Correno  they were good in Spring training for us, stick them in the Pen with Degrom, Familia, Valvarde, and Parnell.

Add Black if he shapes up in AAA and now you have a much better Bullpen

Parnell isn't ready. He's building arm strength. Torres and Rice generally don't throw 8 straight balls. The D was bad, they really needed Gee to get through the 7th.

Yes, it's just one game, but here were our question marks going into the off-season and here are today's results:

Our SS's are horrible: Went 1/5 with 3 strikeouts

Who's our 1B?: Davis/Duda combo went 0/4

Bullpen needs a lot of help: Today, they sucked

Replace Byrd's production: Granderson had a terrible day - 0/5 with 3 K's

We don't have a leadoff hitter: EYJ goes 0/4 with 4K's...

Bring up DeGrom stick him in the Pen, Ill be happy with Degrom, Familia, Valvarde hoprfully Black can get back on track down in the minors

The Nats know that the Mets (mainly the bullpen) will crumble when the chips are down, and/or nibble when they have the advantage in an inning. They just know and wait. Eventually we come to them. The min Parnell had the advantage he started throwning change-ups and breaking stuff out of the zone. The guy knew it was coming. He put the bat on his shoulders and waited until Parnell had to come to him. Bam. That's why Papa Grande did well...he went right after them...un-Mets like...

If the Mets don't have to come right at ya, they won't. They'll nibble. Sad...they know our bullpen lives in fear at the end of a game and digs their own grave.

That was a tough loss.  Everybody could do the old "coulda shoulda woulda" game, but I just think it was mostly a case of sh-- happens.  Go get em on Weds.  Bullpen, besides Valvede looked bad and all those K's for our offense belies both maybe not too bright to bring back Hudgins plus probably should have picked up another bat.  Still, it's Opening Day, so it was nice to see them play again and sure, it would have been nice to win.

What an awful performance by the bullpen. Only Valverde and Familia pitched well. Familia was just unlucky on a pair of bloop hits and a sac fly, but Lannan imploded, and Torres and Rice both flat out stunk. Back-to-back 4 pitch walks? What a joke. What a waste of some great games from Wright, Gee, Lagares, Brown and Valverde.

This bullpen is all Sandy. Don't blame Terry.

Maybe replace the bullpen coach.  They seem to come out mot mentally ready.

For this team to win games they need to be up by 4 runs our bullpen is alot worst then SS and 1b

Is it me or does Wright always hit HR's in blowouts when it doesn't matter?

I HATE the negative Mets fans on this blog. You shouldn't even be called fans. Its ONE game. There are 161 more to go. Opening day wins and losses mean nothing. Spew your rhetoric after the allstargame and then we'll see if your comments have an merit. We scored 7 runs, Gee pitched well despite the runs scored. and i saw Wright, Lagares and Brown homer. Good signs if you ask me. We will get them on Wednesday. Lets Go Mets. Lets Go 90 wins.

Honestly, if murphy was in it could of been a different game.. I never thought id say this but I bet he makes the play on harpers hard shot to 2nd to start that inning against gee

They really missed Murphy today. Amazingly for his defense. It's one game, not gonna turn it into a disaster.

ponzies86

Come on stop crying about the hitting yea they stink but lets face it this team shouldve had this game won when we was up 4-3 in the 7th with 2 outs and 5-4 in the 9th

crafalko17
crafalko17

They scored 7 runs. I don't really care about the K's. Few things cleared up though. Our bullpen is a big weakness, Familia and Valverde looked fine, but my god how about throw some strikes. E.Y does not deserve playing time over Lagares, had issues at 2B and in the OF and struggled big time at the plate.

Hey we usually win our opener. Maybe this is a good sign?

I said it the Bullpen is alot worst then any position on this team.

@John Paul Cullinane EYJ can be speed off the bench...nothing more. I don't wanna dig too deep into the bullpen after 1 game. Though if Parnell isn't okay, we will be in trouble. Torres doesn't walk much so felt like an aberration.

Gee/Lagares/Wright all looked really good though. Not giving up after one game.

crafalko17
crafalko17

@John Paul Cullinane Tejada was okay honestly. Q is pretty worthless though. Davis looked solid at the plate i thought, didn't chase pitches in the dirt, took a walk. Duda looked bad. EYJ looked bad at 2nd and in the OF while puttin up those 4 K's. Not overly concerned about Granderson as he has a track record to go off of. We expect the K's from him. Familia looked okay in the bullpen, victimized by bad def and lucky hits, was throwing gas though. Valverde looked fine. Rice/Torres really killed us though, and the umpires K-zone was all over the place. It's one game, I think we can still have a solid season, but somethings need to happen.

Lets just have Lagares hit leadoff with Murph in the 2-hole.

Lagares

Murphy

Wright

Granderson

CY

Ike

TdA

Tejada

honestly looks okay to me.
EYJ is speed off the bench. Nothing more. He was overmatched by every pitcher. Was sad to watch.

lindro88
lindro88

All of that and we just needed Parnell to get 3 outs.

@Shawn R. Babcock  What's so crazy about it is how well Dillon Gee pounded the strike zone with fastballs, very Bartolo Colon-like. You wonder if Valverde, also being a veteran, probably hung around Colon a lot and picked up on it, and Colon also spent a lot of time with the starting pitchers. However, maybe he should have a chat with the bullpen. Don't get cute- be aggressive and attack. Also, for those who didn't watch closely, Familia pitched very well. Don't let his line fool you- both singles he let up were very weak hits- the first was a high pop-up that neither EY nor Lagares could get to because they were stupidly told to basically set up shop on the warning track. Awful move- you want to play deeper, but that is far too deep. You should not expect a well-hit ball- well-struck baseballs usually are hits, regardless of outfield positioning. The second hit was a broken-bat soft liner through the right side of the infield, and then it was a sac fly that did him in after a passed ball that was kind of wild pitch-ish. That pop fly gets caught and no runs score- simple as that. The second run was because Lannan is so terrible. Seriously, how is he on the MLB roster but Dice-K goes to AAA?

Valverde is going to end up the closer.

@crafalko17 @John Paul Cullinane  I've already given up this season and that doesn't mean I'm not a fan.  The issues were never addressed.  If they were going to pay Chris Young $7 mil, then he's your starting CF along with Granderson as a corner and you get a cleanup hitter for the other corner spot.

EYJ is a 4th as is Lagares...face it,,,they are both 4th's and EYJ for speed off bench and Lagares as a defensive replacement...that is, if you're on a good team.

You then sign Drew and keep Ike at 1b........

OR....Ike was gone in a trade where you get Akoi as a leadoff hitter.  You then trade Duda and one of Lagares/EYJ to an American League team for a relief pitcher and sign K. Morales at the same time as Drew as a Boras package discount...

Either situation, Mets would be a much better team and Sandy instead sat there with his thumb up his backside...

John Paul Cullinane
John Paul Cullinane

@lindro88  I like Parnell, but I have no confidence in ANYONE in our bullpen.  Out of all the questions above, the only thing I am confident will change is that Granderson will produce.  He may only have a .230 avg and a lot of K's, but he WILL produce...however what he will produce is only what Byrd gave us.  I'm not saying I'd rather have Byrd - just Granderson's numbers replace production from last year and do not ADD to the WIN total

...the other issues...never looked at by Sandy.

NO SS

NO CLEANUP HITTER

WHO'S ON FIRST

BULLPEN SUCKS

NO LEADOFF HITTER (Which, for some reason TC thinks he MUST get EYJ in the lineup)

I'm really wondering how many other moves would have happened if the Mets traded for Akoi and how good this team would be...I think the signing of C Young (though I think he's OK, but a terrible contract) really put this team on a course/path downhill.  They didn't need the player that Young is and the Value for him isn't there as a corner, so it is a terrible contract on a player we can't value...

John Paul Cullinane
John Paul Cullinane

@crafalko17 @John Paul Cullinane  It's not that I have an issue with Lagares...If you have granderson and a cleanup hitting corner as your other, then you can have Lagares.....but when your lineup is filled with sub .230 hitters with few runs/rbi's, you can't have Lagares out there...sure, he hit a home run today, but I don't expect that often.

crafalko17
crafalko17

@John Paul Cullinane @crafalko17Why is Lagares a 4th? Possible the best OF defense in the league and he hit today. What more do you want from the kid? Or do you base judgement solely on his first exposure to the bigs after the jump from AA.

Drew is garbage, he wouldn't of done anything more than Tejada did today. The issue was with the bullpen and EY being all around crappy. If Murph's wife waited a day I'd bet we win today.

crafalko17
crafalko17

@John Paul Cullinane @lindro88Truthfully though if CY and Murph are in the lineup...pretty sure the Mets win just because of the defensive upgrades they are. Though Brown really came through in the first

lindro88
lindro88

You know it's one game. I wouldn't worry about these posts. The pen was a mess today, but we wouldn't have even seen Lannan if our closer does his job. EY was showed why he's not a 2nd baseman.
