Terry Collins told reporters Frank Francisco has begun throwing off a mound again, and hopes he can begin pitching in rehab games next week.
Collins did not offer a timetable for Francisco’s return.
Francisco had surgery to remove bone chips in his elbow last December. However, as Martino reports, he arrived to Spring Training this year with more elbow discomfort, although there does not seem to be any structural damage.
In 2012, Francisco had 23 saves with a 5.53 ERA over 42 1/3 innings pitched — he will earn $6 million in the final year of a two-year, $12 million contract he signed before the 2012 season.
