Eric Young 2 (Baron)

Flores, EY Jr. could play second if Murphy traded

Eric Young Jr. and Wilmer Flores will be considered for second base, in the event Daniel Murphy is traded, Sandy Alderson told reporters Monday in Orlando.

That said, Alderson said he would prefer to go to spring training with other candidates as well, again assuming Murphy is not on the team.

“I think we’d be comfortable if we had a number of candidates we could sort through during spring training,” Alderson said.

Flores played the majority of his 106 minor-league games at second base during 2013.

Young came up through the Rockies organization at second base, logging over 500 games. He’s played just 52 games at second since getting to the big leagues.

Philip Kossoy here...looks like Murphy is safe for now.  He's just so valuable to this team I think it would be a big mistake to let him go at this point!

Philip Kossoy here...Young would work as your leadoff man and second baseman.  Flores looks fine over at third and like a slow footed Dan Uggla over at second.  Not going to work!  I still think Murphy is too important to this club to move him unless you get the right player back in return.  AKA a shortstop who can hit or a big Outfield bat!

Mets get someone to root for in Murphy and he's gone? Better be good return.

Wilmer looks like a winner at the plate, but with the glove?  Not so much.

Monitoring tweets from the Baseball meetings and it appears not to many execs interested in Murphy. I don't know what to make of that.

I saw nothing in Flores last year that would make think even for one second that he should be our starting second baseman.

I'll say it again - unless there is a significant haul that justifies it, it would be insane to trade either Murphy or Montero.  What other candidates is he referring to - Brad Emaus?  If the idea of trading Murphy is only about saving money, every single damned reporter and fan should refuse to discuss anything with the Wilpons or Alderson but why they won't spend and why they are cutting payroll?  Everywhere they go, until they leave baseball!  That said, it's wait and see time.  Hopefully, somebody around here knows what they are doing and they keep Murphy and as far as I'm concerned, they can get rid of both Duda and Davis and start from scratch at 1B.  There still are some players left to get.

Sorry, but I'm not impressed with Flores on the field. Sometimes he looked like he was sleep-walking.

I hope I'm wrong on this. I wish him all the success in the world regardless of what team he's on.

This new comment system is terrible. It takes forever to load, often not saving the comments I post. Also, I can't even log in on MetsMinors to post something about Grandy, and it's really annoying. Help please!

Seems like Murph and Davis are goners. Go get Stephen Drew.

What do you think the Mets will get for murph?

Looks like a Murph trade is brewing. I think EY and Flores will b solid at 2nd.

Murph to EY is a MAJOR DOWNGRADE

I'll be very surprised if Murphy doesn't get traded. It makes sense to move him now.

Ok...now I am begining to suspect something intriguing is brewing. Murphy, Ike, and pitching could get something real useful.

I also noticed that Sandy has finally brought up Mejia as a possibility for the rotation. I was surprised that his name hasnt come up before. He was very good during hsi stint in the rotation and he has gotten those chips out of his elbow, Mejia should be a competitior out of sprong training for the fifth spot or another viable trade chip

I honestly have had it with this Livefyre. It's been a pleasure with all my fellow Mets fans. I'd be in Mets Merized.!

If indeed Murphy is traded, I really hope we put Flores at 2B and put the money towards signing Kendry Morales. Get a pen arm and minor leaguers for Murphy. I could see trading Murphy to Royals for Tim Collins and an OF prospect such as Bubba Starling. Could trade a low prospect to Yanks and get Ichiro to play RF and leadoff.

Of course i don't know in what context it was said, but that sounds like Murphy is a goner, why else even discuss his replacements?

helloboy

It would clearly by EYJ, as they need someone who can lead off.  Of course, if they get a leadoff guy for SS than they can use Flores, though i doubt him at 2B.  Really, if i got a SS that can lead off, i would rather use Tovar at 2B (D FENCE, D FENCE)  and use EYJ as a super sub.

I really hope that unless Murphy is part of something really

big for the offense (ie Kemp) that he remains a Met.  Murphy was one of the only bats we had last year in an otherwise dismal offense.  Now with no Byrd, and a couple

of high strike out / low average hitters in Granderson and Chris Young, I think keeping Murphy would be worthwhile.

These comments make him sound like he is a goner.

Well I really hope it's Flores. EY Jr. would be such a weapon off the bench. Flores' upside with the bat should not be ignored. He's still really young and has had a nice last two seasons. The glove is a little scary, but if Murphy can get better, so can he. And if worse comes to comes, Uggla "played" second for years; he doesn't have the power of Uggla obviously, but the kid can hit.

Sounds like the Sale for Murph/Ike/Montero trade is coming along nicely.

Flores has a much better bat than Murphy and is also better defensively. I would love to see Flores get a shot to start regularly.

A quick, aggressive defensive 2B that sprays line drives all over the field. That's a 2B in the Dustin Pedroia mold.

And yes, Pedroia is a bald guy with an ugly face and it doesn't look smooth and pretty, but  it's better performance.

@Zach Ripple if it ain't broke don't; fix it. of the many things that could have been improved with metsblog, the comments section was not it. not metsblog's fault though if their owners mandated it.

@caliboy i'd hope he would be part of something  big. if you put flores or EYJ at 2B, you have lost offense for 2013, no if and or buts about it.

this team struggles to score runs. murphy somehow scored over 90 last year. he also hit well with RISP. you replace that with Flores or EYJ and now the mets offense is considerably worse. they already lost obp with the byrd to granderson downgrade.

@bigdirty just curious. why NOW are you suspecting something? i mean i expect them to be traded too, at least one of them if not both. but hasn't murphy and ike been on the block almost all offseason? what new piece of information made things more intriguing regarding ike and murphy today as opposed to a week ago for example?

@metsstrong it's been weird. i couldn't comment for a while on the alderson post. then when i refresh my comments don;t appear. then minutes later they do.

@Freddie Morales If you say any yankee games last year, you would not want any part of Ichiro.

Starling is one of my favorite prospects to watch. The guy has so much raw talent and is such an amazing athlete, I would love to see him enter the mets system. Sure he is a little ways away and has some bust potential but Bubba Starling could end up being a huge impact bat.

They already made a mistake sending away Wil Myers, why not ask Bubba Starling?

@helloboy I can't believe you actually just advocated for Tovar to start everyday at second base...

oleosmirf
oleosmirf

@helloboy Tovar at 2B? That's lunacy. Look I get it defense is important, but Tovar would be the worst offensive starting 2B in baseball by a long shot.

He would have to be the best defensive 2B to ever live in order for it be worth giving up that much offense...

@texasmetsfan 100% agreed. Murph is more than just his stats - which themselves are pretty good - the guy's got heart and passion, and he's clutch too. I want him on my team.

Former MetBlogger
Former MetBlogger

@texasmetsfan Murphy had a sub-700 OPS through August 25 (or thereabouts), so for most of the year, he really wasn't a good hitter.  His terrible sub-6% walk rates in '11 and '12 got worse and dropped below 5%.  That's awful, especially when you consider that walk rates/pitch selection was something Murphy openly admitted that he had to improve upon last year.  Throw in the below average (not awful, just below average) glove/range, and you're talking about a very average baseball player.  He just looked good, because the rest of the Mets were so damned crappy.

A strong September saved Murphy's season last year, but overall, he regressed and was disappointing.  There is a reason the Mets are shopping him and trying to take advantage of some teams' need for an average second baseman.

@Marcus Jensen Flores hasn't proven anything yet at the big league level, and realistically his ceiling isn't much higher than what Murphy gave you last year. He'll be a 15 HR /75 RBI guy who hits .280 doesn't walk much, very much like Murphy. The difference is he's 22 and cheap.

texasmetsfan
texasmetsfan

@Marcus Jensen I would like to agree with you but in the games I watched Flores play, (other than his first week filling in for Wright) he looked

really overmatched at the plate, and he regressed as the season concluded.

@Marcus Jensen saying flores has a much better bat than murphy is odd. you can use words like "potential", or "upside", but right now, murphy has a better bat,.

Zach Ripple
Zach Ripple

But Murphy hurts you so much with his defense that a guy like EY, with better speed and athleticism and natural instincts at the position, would make up the difference, plus he fits the lineup better because he can lead off. Oh, and for you to actually believe Byrd to Granderson is a downgrade is ignorant. FORGET what they did last year. The important thing is how they will perform the next couple of seasons. Byrd will likely not put up the same numbers, while Granderson is young enough to rebound as a 30-homer player.

Marcus Jensen

@md92468 @Marcus Jensen Flores was 21 last year. He always struggles initially at a level and then eventually figures it out. He's done that consistently at almost every minor league level.

bubbadubbs

After that first week he had a bad wheel hard to get in a groove with a serious high ankle sprain

Marcus Jensen
Marcus Jensen

@texasmetsfan @Marcus Jensen He was 21 and new to the league. The thing about Flores is that he makes adjustments well and eventually figures it out. He always struggles initially at new levels.

Marcus Jensen
Marcus Jensen

@ton @Marcus Jensen I can't disagree with that but Flores has always hit, and always while young at an advanced level. One look at his minor league #'s proves he can flat out rake. Nothing suggests he won't eventually become an above average major league hitter as well.

Murphy is a quality hitter, but Flores has much more power and a lot more electricity in the bat.
