Wilmer Flores takes a cut 2

Flores and Nieuwenhuis to start, emphasis turns to younger players

In an effort to start playing his younger players more, and after talking with Sandy Alderson, Terry Collins said Friday that Kirk Nieuwenhuis and Wilmer Flores will begin seeing more time in the starting lineup.

Nieuwenhuis will hit sixth and start in left field Friday against the Phillies, while Flores will bat eighth and start at shortstop.

Similarly, Lucas Duda will start this weekend against LHP Cole Hamels, according to Collins, who for a long while had been benching Duda against left-handed starting pitchers.

Flores is hitting just .238 in the eight games since his most recent promotion. Ruben Tejada is batting .158 during the same time frame.

Well, it’s about time. Pennant race or not, this probably should have happened a while ago. I’d also like to see Matt den Dekker get himself in the mix, but I’ll take what they’re willing to give us. I suspect that will happen sooner than later, probably at Chris Young’s expense. I’d also expect to see Noah Syndergaard get up here at some point as well, since they’re going to want to add him to the 40-man roster before this winter anyway… and, it would be nice to know what he’s about before the start of the silly season.

I remember in spring training when I asked Cerrone on Twitter about Flores playing SS being that he came up as a SS and he said "Flores has outgrown the position".....its just funny now that a few months later Flores is playing SS...:)

Can we get a legitimate leadoff hitter please....

glad that they are finally giving Flores a true chance and giving MDD some time.  I do  not agree about bringing up Noah.  Everything I have read, qoutes from coaches and scouts, is that he needs more time, he is not ready.  He is only 21.  no need to rush him.  If they recall a pitcher, Montero should be the guy.  He seems to have gotten over his early season issues and is back to attacking hitters with his assortment of pitches and great control.  He also has more innings available since he spent time on the DL.  Bring him up and give him a serious look.  This way you know going into the winter if he is a canidate to make the rotation, needs to become a part of the pen like Mejia and Familia, or becomes a viable trade chip for a power bat.

Flores is only one year younger then Tejada.

How does playing  Flores over Tejada getting younger :) but I agree we need to see what he can do everyday.... before we trade a bunch of young talent for a big name SS who might not be able to produce at Cite field

Well it took them long enough. I guess they finally got tired of seeing Tejada lift week fly balls behind second base. Now we get to see who the real Flores is. The one in the minors or the one that wasn't getting enough playing time to show if he could actually hit major league pitching

About freaking time.  I hope it really happens especially in regards to Flores.

Please keep in mind that Kirk Nieuwenhuis is 27 and Lucas Duda is 28.  Not exactly a youth movement.  Flores is 23 but only 1 year younger than Tejada.  Juan Lagares is 25,  Eric Campbell is 27 and Travis D'arnault is 25.  Even the young guys are not exactly kids.

Curious---Who do you value more--Wheeler or Thor? Why?

If they really and truly play Flores regularly, he will not only hit, but drive in runs, too.

About time, TC puts the youth in the games. Glad to see Flores and Neiwenhuis can finally show what they can or can not do with more starts.

I mean, I'm tired of Tejada just as much as anyone, but preach to these guys you want them to get on base. Well, Tejada is 3rd on the team in OBP with .344, but only hits .225. Then you look at Granderson with a .330 OBP and hits .224. The only difference between these two is that Granderson's OPS is 100 points higher. Also, Granderson has a 1.5 WAR compared to Tejada's 1.0, but you never hear the boos for Granderson. Why? Because he's in love with the long ball.

In no way am I defending the guy, because I've been calling for Flores to play shortstop for months, but it's worth pointing out.

Mets are always a day late and a dollar short in EVERYTHING they do. What a disgrace.

Collins said that, huh?  Which means, of course, that we'll get 2 more weeks of Tejada/C. Young...

Starting to think more and more that with Harvey coming back next year, wheeler basically declared an untouchable, the emergence of Degroom and with Gee and Neise not being great, starting to think Syndergard and Montero along with say a Nimmo will be used to make a deal for Carlos Gonzalez. As far as a SS, I would rather have Jimmy Rollins over Jed Lowrie in free agency. At least Rollins can leadoff and switch hit.

After costing us the game yesterday I think EY should go. Den Decker can play the field better, hit with some power, and is just about as fast. You saw the plays Kurt made yesterday to keep us in the game. The young kids are hungry. Can't believe EY lolly popped the throw to the SS instead of throwing home. If he throws home either they don't send the runner or he is out by 10 feet. As it was they almost got him. Either way the Nats only score 2 in regulation and we win 3 to 2 and are 7 games back instead of 9. The manager needs to get in a players face for a play like that. Like Darling said you learn that in LLeague. You always throw home and if it needs to be cut it gets cut.

Closer to 2 years. His bday was 2 days ago

@Matthew Drago  Kirk and Duda are at their peak and are both cost controlled for years. Flores is almost two years older than Tejada and turned 23 two days ago.  Most guys aren't A-Rod or Mike Trout.  Duda is 28, but this is also his fifth year in the majors.

If it makes you happier, Wheeler and Mejia are 24, as is Familia. Harvey is 25.

@Matthew Drago Of course they all should have been promoted years ago, but these are the Mets, they take their pulse with a calendar.

@Frank Accardi  Bad timing to trade Niese right now.  Don't sell low.  Hopefully he'll get back on track for a bunch of starts.

@oddmanrush The Mets have Curtis on waivers and no takers. Mets would be willing to give him away for NADA just to get rid of remaining $5 million over the next 3 years.

zoddie

@oddmanrush  There's something to this but keep in mind a few things.  Tejada hasn't been terrible, but his OBP has been helped a bit by intentional walks.  He also has NO power.  He has one of the lowest SLG percentages in all of baseball.

He plays a solid shortstop defensively and is still very young but it is time to give Wilmer some consistent playing time to see if he can be a really good hitter and bad (but not terrible) SS.

@thjopr6986  Yeah, BOO because they are doing what we have been asking them to do!  How dare they because it is a few weeks too late!  THE HORROR

@Anthony Gaetano DeCesare  I'd give Jimmy Rollins 1 year and see if Matt Reynolds continues to develop. My first choice is to trade Wheeler or Thor to CUBS for Baez or Addison Russell.

@Mushroombarleysoup  I'm with you.  I'll bet my last buck that we see Tejada AND CY in the lineup on Saturday and Sunday, especially if Flores and Nieuwenhuis don't hit tonight.

zoddie

@dansince62  Agree that we need to see den Dekker soon.  A shame that he's another lefty on a team with Kirk and Grandy already in the outfield but he still needs to be promoted.

He clearly isn't "just about as fast" as EY, though.  He had 9 SB last year and 9 SB this year.  EY is one of the fastest guys in baseball.  MdD has good speed.  Big difference.

zoddie

@Macacawitz @Matthew Drago  Not that you ever have anything useful to add, but when would you have liked to promote Campbell, d'Arnaud, Lagares, Flores, and Duda?  What should have been the plan, with the correct dates/years?

2ndhalffun
2ndhalffun

@Macacawitz @2ndhalffun  You take that into consideration. If you said it would cost you today WHEELER or THOR for any player. Which one do you value more?

oddmanrush

@zoddie @oddmanrush I absolutely agree with the switch. The Mets need a jolt offensively. If Flores gives a spark, you'd be crazy not to sacrifice the defense at the SS position to put them in a better position to score more runs. We've seen Tejada. Give Flores a look and determine whether or not he is part of the solution.

Anthony Gaetano DeCesare

I think it takes 2 years to get rollins, but probably do it because he's better then Jed lowrie and anything else we have at ss on the team.

Anthony Gaetano DeCesare

Cargo's contract is right in line with what alderson would do, 3 yrs 53 million. Their not trading for Tulo, their not taking on that contract at that much money. No way. Their not trading Wheeler, he was declared untouchable the other day by the team, gee and neise have went way down in trade value, harvey will be back next year and with degroom coming on the scene, Thor is the most likely with Montero to go, their is no free agebt OF's worth talking about and Mike Stanton is not going anywhere so move on mets fans from that.

Nick Squatrito
Nick Squatrito

Depends on the player. If it came down to one or the other in a trade for Giancarlo I'll give them whichever they asked for. If you're talking we had to pick one going forward with its too early to tell. Syndergaard needs to get some experience in the majors first. As for Wheeler, I see him being a right handed Gio Gonzalez. He could go out on any given day and be ace-like but also could go out and have no control over his fast ball and walk 5 guys in 4 innings. If that's the case he's still a great #3 moving forward

If you have to trade thor and montero and hope they don't pitch well....colorado is the place to do it with the thin air.

Rollins $11m option just vested for the Phillies and he'll be 36 next year. It makes no sense to trade for him. Our partner should be the cubs.
