Wilmer Flores, Dario Alvarez garner Player of the Week honors

Mets prospects Wilmer Flores, named the Pacific Coast League Player of the Week, and Dario Alvarez, named the South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week, both earned top honors in their respective leagues this week.

Flores has hit a home run in five straight games with Triple-A Las Vegas, during which he has 15 RBI.

After his postgame demotion on June 25, Flores has an 11-game hitting streak in Las Vegas. The only game he didn’t hit safely in was his first, on June 26.

In Single-A, Alvarez turned in two clean outings over the course of the week, giving up just five hits over 10 1/3 total innings for Savannah. On June 30, he pitched five shutout innings. His July 5 start yielded only one run, unearned.  He struck out eight batters in each outing, and walked only one in each start.

He has a 0.87 ERA this year with Single-A Savannah.

It doesn't matter. He came up to the majors and that idiot Collins didn't use him anyway. I have never seen a worse manager in MLB than Terry Collins.

Flores is still only 22 but Its highly unlikely he can be an everyday SS and i'm starting to get worried that he might be a AAAA player.

Kirk Nieuwenhuis better go 5 for 5 or General Alderson and his lap dog T Collins will bench him for another week. General Alderson knows its better to get players like Abreu playing time then to try and develop young talent. Fred Wilponzee needs to show everyone he really cares about winning. Keep the 22 year old Flores in the minors, why give this kid a real chance in the majors. General Alderson can tell based on Flores limited At bats that he will never be a quality player. General Alderson is the best GM in the history of the game, Thank you Fred Wilponzee!!

If we live in a world where Jose Reyes, our number one prospect at the time by far, can lose his job to Kaz Matsui, how in the world is it that Flores cannot dethrone RUBEN *%*#(&# Tejeda?!?  How Terry, HOW?!?

Ruben Tejada for President!

C.K. Dexter Haven
C.K. Dexter Haven

Just looked at Tejada's numbers.....vs. OTHER NL #8 hitters.  17 players with at least 70 ABs....Not really surprising...

5th in hits, 5th in RBI's, 5th in HRs, 7th in avg., 5th in runs (not an impressive stat to be honest) and of course tied for 1st in OBP.  17 guys.

Folks, #8 hitters are NOT what keeps your teams from the playoffs.  They are supposed to just keep the line moving and play good D.  Tejada plays above average defense.

They don't want Flores at short because he's error prone. So they stay with Tejada. And he has been getting on lately with a .350 OBP. So he plays.

Can we somehow find takers for Duda? American League Dh-1B guy? Then slide Murphy over to 1B and put Flores at 2B. I understand Duda is cheap but it's about winning (for the fans anyway)!

And all the trade Murphy talk. If the Mets don't have the money to sign Murphy, what was the point of signing Grandy?

Chapter 7

I watched most of Flores' starts this year. Must have missed all the bad defensive games. The only play that sticks out was when he and Murphy both covered 2b on a comebacker. The pitcher didn't know who to throw to.

Wilmer, Sandy said he will bring you up to stay when you hit 2 homers a game.  Tejada is our man right now.  That 230 avg is killing it and his long ball potential is off the charts.

Trade Murphy, (his value is very high with him being an all-star) Play Flores at 2nd, the rest of the season. if he fails, we still have Matt Reynolds waiting in the wings.

Bring up Wilmer.  Start him at SS.

Cut CY.  Start Soup.

Jesus, it's not rocket science.  Play the guys than can hit.  End of story.

Can Flores play LF?…Bingo we've got an opening!

haha.. i feel like we should send Wright, Murphy, Granderson, and our pitchers to Vegas & just really tear up that league....i feel like everyone plays well there & they get to the Mets and it's like they never played before...

Flores, Kirk, den Dekker, d'Arnaud, etc crush it in the minors, when are these guys gonna be traded for players that can actually play Major League Baseball?

chicagofan

Ok.  What more does Flores have to do at the triple A level to get a legitimate shot?  Time to bring him up, find a position, and stick with him there.  Let him know he has it for the rest of the year, no matter how he does.  We are not going anywhere this year.  And we have exhibited similar patience with the catcher (despite being sent down for a brief bit).  Lets give Flores a chance.  First base?  Duda has not set the world on fire.  Short stop?  Maybe.  No real solution there.  And let him grow into the position.  Second base?  Move Murphy to lf.  Something.  I have been to LV, and seen him play in person.  This boy can swing the bat.  He just needs the confidence.

Other opinions????

Flores yes .......Alvarez no ..what is Alvarez 25 yrs old and in SIngle a ball?

Frank Tangorra

Here we go with the Flores posts. He is a AAAA player. Cannot hit at the major league level. Guys like him den Dekker have to go. They tear up AAA and come up here and do nothing. And enough with the predictions on future rosters. It's getting old.

specialk

@Jordan Kopp Where would you like to play him? He's not a shortstop and if you saw him everyday you'd see that.  Anytime he had a shot to play he did nothing but don't let facts get in the way of a bs story.

zoddie
zoddie

@Kyle Fox  Because Tejada has been outplaying Flores both offensively and defensively this season and Terry wants to win.  Will Flores end up with the better career?  Probably.

theglider

What other #8 hitter has a .350 OBP?

zoddie
zoddie

@Mario Arduini Why would the Mets want to trade Duda?  He's leading or is #2 on the team in most offensive categories.

Besides, Murphy doesn't hit enough for first.

C.K. Dexter Haven
C.K. Dexter Haven

@Mario Arduini I don't mind this idea but i'd rather know for sure that Flores can hit at this level before they did it.  Murph is not going to hit for the power Duda can.  But if Flores can mimic Murph's numbers with a bit more power, then you're good.  But Duda's on pace for 25/85 or so...i'd hate to lose that to a ?

Duda has been good this year, but this move strengthens defense up the middle as well as improving the offense.

@Chapter 7  It is more the organization's faith in Wilmer Flores, Dilson Herrera, and Matt Reynolds.

@Chapter 7  Baseball Reference has him at -0.2 dWAR.  Take that for what its worth.

@legs3  Batting average?  What is this, 1982?

Max Denby

@hankincolo who exactly would you like to get for Murph?  I don't like trade talk unless you have an idea of how improve the club. And enough with the prospects.

hankincolo

@Max Denby  Cut Young and play Kirk and EY in LF. Soup can share first with Duda. Trade Murphy, install Flores at 2nd, if he flops, the Mets have Reynolds for next season, or perhaps even Herrera.

zoddie

@rico  Ha, I wish.  He's way too slow, evidently.

C.K. Dexter Haven
C.K. Dexter Haven

@chicagofan Well..3B, C, RF, and CF are all out.  I would say with the way Duda is hitting (especially since he's going the other way now with power) 1B is out too.  That leaves 2B, SS and LF.  I doubt highly he has the legs or the arm for an OF position.  PLUS learning it on the ML level?  AND trying to hit?  2B?  Until they trade him, I can't see Flores supplanting the best hitter on the team.  That leaves SS....and Tejada seems to be everyone's favorite whipping boy, so.....

@Frank Tangorra Ladies and gentlemen, introducing the new General Manager and Head of Scouting for the New York Mets....Frank Tangorra!

Genius observation, Frank!  I remember a few years back when you said that Jose Reyes would never hit Major League pitching and that Jeff Duncan "is for real".

Keep 'em coming, Frank!

helloboy

@Frank Tangorra Future roster predictions are this thing called fun.  If nobody brought up hypothetical trades or moves there would be a sharp drop in things to discuss and think about.

cj1786
cj1786

@Frank Tangorra The fact that you lumped Flores and Den Dekker together shows you really don't have a very good grasp on how baseball works.

First the AAA numbers.  Den Dekker has 782 PA's in AAA and has a line of .263/.316/.439 with 21 HRs.

Flores on the other hand in 643 PAs in AAA has a line of .323/.360/.548 with 26 HRs.

On top of that, Den Dekker has put up those numbers as a 25-26 year old.  Flores as a 21-22 year old.

Flores has not even had 200 PA's in the big leagues, most of them coming with irregular playing time.

Den Dekker is a AAAA player, but to write off Flores as a AAAA player already is ridiculous. He's 22 years old.

Max Denby
Max Denby

@zoddie @Kyle Fox Flores has a big offensive upside.  Ruben has... no upside.  The Mets needs hitting and power.  It makes no sense.  Let Flores have a go at it.

theglider

He dropped two balls against San Diego. They didn't go as errors because the Padre player stopped running, but they were dropped. Daniel Murphy had to tell him about the infield fly rule (think about that for a moment).

Errors require chances. If an outfielder misjudged a ball and doesn't touch it then it's a double. But we all know missed it.

Chapter 7
Chapter 7

It should be about keeping the solid pieces we have and adding to that. Not replacing what we have with the potential of similar production, at best.

Murphy is a legit mlb hitter.

C.K. Dexter Haven
C.K. Dexter Haven

@zoddie  but it's pretty amazing that they're going to try and sell teams on Murph's hitting prowess for the purposes of a trade, but don't really believe in that same prowess with regard to paying him....a home grown talent

Chapter 7
Chapter 7

And how exactly do you calculate dWAR?

Max Denby
Max Denby

@hankincolo that's a bit drastic.  I'd keep murphy and trot Flores out at short, he wasn't THAT bad.

zoddie
zoddie

@cj1786 @Frank Tangorra  This is spot on.  Even though it seems Flores has been around FOREVER (this is his 7th season and he's been talked about since 2008) he's still very, very young.

helloboy
helloboy

@cj1786 @Frank Tangorra The key is that he is 22 years old.  Maybe the organization pushed him too fast.  They had plenty of time to work on him to get him a position before putting him in no man's land.  Now they have no idea what to do with him. In the end, I bet he gets traded.

Chapter 7
Chapter 7

I hope its a non issue and they lock him up for 4 more years.

@C.K. Dexter Haven @zoddie I'd much prefer to pay Murphy and keep him, but have no confidence that the Wilpons' payroll can accommodate him.

C.K. Dexter Haven
C.K. Dexter Haven

@Dr. Jonathan Reefer 20 RBIs?  Besides the fact that they weren't pitching to him much, who was he driving in from the 8th hole?  d'Arnaud who's OBP has been around .300 for most of the season?  C Young who's OBP is .280 or Duda who is the slowest guy on the team?  And who's driving him in?  the pitcher?  EY?

zoddie
zoddie

@Dr. Jonathan Reefer  In a half season (and losing some playing time to Flores), his WAR is 1.  Over a full season, it'd be 2.  That means he is an average major league shortstop.  With the Mets young pitching, if ALL our guys were average, we'd have a team headed for the playoffs.

theglider
theglider

And Puig overran second. Murphy had to tell Flores to tag him. If Puig wasn't a terrible runner he'd have been back on second.
