Fitting Four Outfielders into Three Spots

“Actually, it’s unclear how comfortable [Jerry Manuel], the Mets’ manager, will be trying to fit four outfielders into three spots now that [Carlos Beltran] has returned. Angel Pagan, who was filling in for Beltran in center field this season, has been a revelation. So on Thursday night, at least, Pagan will stay in the lineup and move to right field and Jeff Francoeur, who has been the regular right fielder, will go to the bench.”

…actually, i think the problem is quite simple…i love frenchy, but the fact of the matter is Pagan has out-performed him, sits fifth in the National League in hitting, and if Jose Reyes can get healthy, the Mets have a dynamic 1-2 punch at the top of the lineup…and so, as difficult as it is to disappoint Frenchy, he has to be the odd man out until Pagan proves he isn’t capable of doing the job…i think early on, Frenchy will get plenty of at bats because Beltran might not be an everyday player right off the bat, and so he will get an opportunity to be more consistent and make the decision even more difficult for Manuel

In 298 at bats, Pagan is hitting .315 with a .372 on base percentage, with six home runs and 40 RBI, whereas Francoeur is hitting .253 with a .302 on base percentage, with eight home runs and 42 RBI in 293 at bats.
