I've followed Mets since '66. I've loved them since the first game and have been a plan holder many years since. I reserve the right to call it as I see it and what I've seen in recent years is mostly incompetence and choking nickle-and-dime administration from ownership to Front office. Silence equals consent.  Met fans must continue to voice displeasure lest the FO think we're all happy as the days are long --and they will be VERY long without any meaningful player transactions to upgrade SS and 1st base. Sandy, this team is most decidedly NOT winning 90 games and I feel like an idiot for even typing that. You insult me for even saying that.  I will not attend Citi because I can't afford it anymore and, even if I could, I'm not buying what you're selling. It's a bad to mediocre product. Give me a good product and I will find a way to buy.  Don't blame empty seats on me. I am parched. I am thirsty for a competetive team again. But, I will not drink your kool-aid.

Let's try to be a little bit more Positive. Personally, I save my criticism for the "Evil Empire" The constant harping on ownership, management, players makes you guys seem like spoiled children. Enjoy your Team, dare I say love your Team. Trust me, I've been a Met fan for a long time, I remember Eddie Kranepool playing basketball (yes, basketball) at Monroe! This will be an interesting season as the team transitions into a contender, enjoy it. I'm looking to finish a game or two above .500, so be it. YOU are a Met fan, that is a great thing to be!

Many people on here, maybe even more than 50%, I think are probably dumb. Everyone wants to see "the kids the kids the kids" play. So we actually have kids here in D'Arnaud and Wheeler, and because they aren't all-stars after 5 minutes, they suck and are busts. Meanwhile, these same people are clamoring for more kids like Flores and Montero, who probably will be just as mediocre or worse out of the gate.

People are stupid.

nym68

People who base their opinions on the stats they read about the game they didn't watch either need to watch more baseball or comment less about it....because there are so many uninformed "fans" telling everyone just how stupid they truly are

If you think about it, the Mets didn't spend money this offseason. With the contracts coming off the books, they just signed a couple players to make it seem like they spent money but the payroll is the same as last years.

Kenneth Meltsner
Kenneth Meltsner

Not one comment about Wheeler's pitch count. Odd. And while we're on the subject of boased 'homer' announcers, has anyone ever spent more than three innings with John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman? Sterling is quirky in a lovable, Phil Rizzuto kinda way but any pretext of objectivity has long-since left the building. The team itself has been nothing to write home about (especially these past seven years) but Met broadcasters have generally been among the best in the business.

alphaomega

National announcers are such homers I just watch the Darnaud HR on mets.com and I'm guessing since it was Strasburg pitching trying to protect him all they said was how the wind carried it and it's a fly ball every other day STOP!!!! I understand Strasburg is good but he is human he makes mistakes their have been better pitchers and will be better that have given up HR's

I really hope other fanbases whine as much as mets fans do. These comment sections are hilarious.

Best market in the country and they've been to three playoffs in the past 25 years.  Are you OK with that?  When you're older and have a family, let's say of 4, and you think about the cost to go to a game - tickets, parking, concessions, you'll think twice about spending disposable income on a product that isn't worth it...and that is why it is unacceptable to blame the fans for not coming to games as to why they can't field a winning team.

@Victor Triguero  "I would never abandon this franchise...as much as I despise the Wilpons/Sandy...I don't root for them...I root for the orange and blue..The Mets logo...always have and always will"

Just as the Wilpons want you. Nice and loyal.

@Jimmy BX  "This is not how you create a playoff team. Most prospects flop. Wheeler is most likely going to be an average pitcher than a dominant one. You don't traded established stars for an average player who is a product of draft hype."

Actually, it's exactly how you build a winning franchise.

nncyel
nncyel

@Jimmy BX Really? Don't trade players who are about to become free agents and clearly not re-signing with your team for prospects? Even if he is average, and, I think you're wrong about that, they obtained a major league pitcher for Beltran. If you had been the GM they would have nothing - Beltran was walking.

lindro88
lindro88

You don't trade a player you had no intent or chance of resigning for a top pitching prospect? Still fawning over Carlos Beltran.

@Jimmy BX I disagree about wheeler im going off top of my head but his last 8? or so starts he had a 2 era and he is the type of guy that is going to be helped by Harvey and noah soaking up the spotlight...travis I think we have to wait and see even tho I haven't seen any glimmer of hope yet

@dannym28  Lol - Mets fans already calling him a bust.  He only has 90+ at bats in the majors.  Little hard to call him a bust yet, especially based on SP numbers.  Hopefully, he stays healthy and produces this year.

Macacawitz
Macacawitz

@dannym28 What's your point?  He hit a wind blown homerun today at the end of another lousy AB.  He took strike three on the pitch before but got a break.  He's still hitting about .160 in spring training. A little too early to be asking people to eat their words.

stemog
stemog

@Mets0987 At least the guys they spent money on will actually be on the team this year.

nym68
nym68

@alphaomega  it was a wind aided HR. I don't think opposing announcers get all that worked up to dismiss HRs in a spring training game as you think they do. In the opening of the broadcast they talked about the wind and how it was blowing out in that direction. So when TD hits a routine flyball that clears the fence what were they supposed to say, nothing?

Macacawitz
Macacawitz

@Max Blay The Yankees have 7 World Series appearances in the last 17 years.  The Mets have made the playoffs 7 times in 51.  Be grateful it's just whining and not the full vitriol the stooges who run this mess clearly deserve.

John Paul Cullinane
John Paul Cullinane

@Max Blay How many have only made the playoffs 3 times in the past 25 years and are in the best market in the world?

Frank Gerber
Frank Gerber

@John Paul Cullinane  Fact... NY is the best market in the world... Fact only The Giants and Yankees have won championships in the last 15 years. The Nets (now an NY team), Rangers, Jets, Islanders and Knicks have won nothing (Devils have, but they aren't a New York Team). So it may be the best market, but besides the Yanks and G-Men, we don't have a long history of winning. Think about it, the Mets last won a world series in 86, but the Jets 69, kicks 73, Islanders 83, NJ/Brooklyn never, and rangers 94... we don't have a ton of winners in NYC despite having the reputation for being a win now type of town, outside of the Yanks and to a lesser degree the Giants, there hasn't been a lot of winning.

John Paul Cullinane
John Paul Cullinane

As a comparison; according to CNNMoney at the Arizona Diamondbacks' ballpark, a 14-ounce beer and a hot dog costs just $5.50 whereas a hotdog alone at Citi Field last year was $6.25.  Another 72-76 win team is not worth what they charge which is why fans won't come and this team will continue to blame the fans.

stemog

@Olerud42 @Victor Triguero I'm not from New York and have been a Met fan since 1968. Never, ever considered switching allegiances, especially considering I'm in the heart of Phillies country. Suffered through some dreadful years in the 1970s and worse owners than the Wilpons. Today, there are so many fickle fans who think nothing of switching allegiances.

Bo Beck

@Olerud42 @Jimmy BX Are you out of your mind, quick question would the Mets be better today if they traded Reyes instead of letting him walk. The answer is yes!, and for this reason it gives them prospects. Prospects they could trade to bring in a star player. Not an aging one who wanted out of N.Y badly. And about Wheeler if you never played baseball in Florida please just shut up and stop complaining about pitching.

stemog
stemog

@Joseph DeFazio @dannym28 Honestly. You guys call the Mets your favorite team, yet rag on everything and anything ... and before the season even starts. Why bother rooting?

Frank Gerber

@John Paul CullinanI'd rather go and see the Mets lose with a terrible team then go to any other sporting event, its a love affair with your favorite team... they go through ups and downs, we are down right now.... but on the rise

nncyel
nncyel

@John Paul Cullinane On the other hand JP you seem to be having just a great old time complaining about the team, so there's that. What would you have to do with your time if they were more successful?

I've been to ballparks all across the country - not to cheer for my team to win and being angry with players, management or owners when they don't - my team wasn't even playing in the game. But just to go to the park and enjoy the greatest sport in the world being played by some of the best athletes in the world. I agree it's expensive and that has cut into the number of games I go to in person, but I don't find it really that much of a challenge to not eat a hotdog or drink a beer.

We have the power within ourselves to be miserable or to be happy just based on our perspective on life. Life is short - there's no reason to be as miserable as so many of the posters on this blog seem to be over things like the price of a hot dog, whether Ruben Tejada is playing SS for the Mets or whether the team is winning or losing.

Reading what all you whiners have to say though has helped me improve my perspective on life - I'm trying to be more consistently optimistic not only for my sports teams but for other things I'm engaged in. So thanks, sort of - it's still exasperating seeing how relentlessly negative some of you are over something that's supposed to be entertainment and enjoyable.

Nym68 1) it's a spring training game sorry I can't watch every pitch and at bat must mean I'm not a met fan 2) the game wasn't on the radio or tv except for mlb network which were I was during the game wasn't able to watch the gAme but I guess your supposed to be a bigger fan? @Mario Caraballo Only 2 teams in MLB have not had a winning season in the last 5 years.  The Mets and Astros.

Couple the losing with the Madoff fiasco, the treatment by the front office of Beltran and Harvey or the opening of Citifield an ode to Fred Wilpon's love affair with the Dodgers...is it any wonder Mets fans are a bit cynical?
