I have such an issue with this blog sometimes. We're all Mets fans. Can we stop calling each other names. Like, I know we have questions at short and first, but can we please refrain from calling each other idiots because of it.

Let's put a package together for Stanton, sign Drew, and print playoff tix.

This means. Capt.k and Q-tip makes the club I guess.

Flores is not the answer at SS. It is a defensive minded position that requires better fielding. Flores is a 3B that is blocked by David Wright. It would be best for him and the team if he was traded. Playing him at SS only weakens his trade value.

What a terrible job of the announcers this game. They suck. And they don't announce all the met hitters while there batting. To busy worshiping Rosenthal the closer of the cards to  announce all the Mets hitters that come to the plate in the 9th. Well haha your boy got lit by Lutz.

Matt den Dekker is one of the young Mets that I am pulling for this season. Another very good game with another clutch hit.

I cannot tell you how many time that the Mets had runners in scoring position last year and I knew that we were only going to score if something unusual occurred.

An outfielder with some pop that can catch a ball -- a revelation!

I only heard one inning of the game on my car radio --Was the game played in an Eastern Bloc country? The reception sounded like it.

No more WFAN! Another dagger!

This blog is a joke. Montero goes 2 innings and Matt writes "his inning of work." Worst blog of all time

Niese looked terrible to me. 79 mph fastball, curve was hanging all day, and he was all over the place with his location. I hope he is Not the opening day starter. I know it was the first star of spring but its hard not to be pessimistic with what i saw today

Most importantly, how did Flores look at SS? I managed to catch a few innings on the radio while at work, but I did not get to watch. I know he bobbled his first attempt and got the force instead of turning two, but I will chalk that up to nerves. Does anyone who watched have an evaluation?

I hope to see more of him there.

No, you can't put Murphy at 1st at the expense of Ike's power potential. Just let Flores play SS, if he hits another team will want him and play him at 3rd.

I've said this a number of times now, Jon Niese cannot start opening day. He's not our best pitcher. He's not our second best pitcher. I mean this team sells on winning, yet on the 1st day of the year, we are going to start a pitcher because what? He's earned it? He's the longest tenured pitcher? Who cares!!! Can we at least start the season on a good note, before we collapse by June? I know in the grand scheme of things it's not a big deal, but c'mon. I'm going to opening day as I have for 13 years straight, and I'd be much more excited to see Wheeler vs Strasburg.

@Angelo Castelli All it would take to get Stanton is something like Harvey, Dom Smith, Wilmer, and Montero.  Maybe more.

Still in?

@RockMarz  Because Q had one good game? He's batting .188 .188 .250 this spring.  He's been awful.

Well, neither was Ripken but they stuck him there. (yes he's not Ripkin) They are not going to trade for Franklin they are not going to sign Drew. At least not till June. Its Flores, Tejada, or that Quintonilla guy. Your choice, but I have scene enough of tejada to say he is a good back middle infielder, plays some second play some short, but thats it. Give Flores a shot. If he hits like today it will make up for what you loose in defense. If he is not the future there and you want  to trade him fine. Playing him at short will not hurt his trade value because nobody really thinks his future is there. Which is what scouts said about Murphy at 2b. Judging by the shape Flores came in, i think he will put in the effort to make him self expectable defensively. Not great not average, but expectable with his bat carrying the load.

Package Flores to the Marlins for Stanton. Flores has no position on the Mets.

Richard Alicea

disagree...just because he's a bit lanky doesn't mean he can't play an average SS.  As long as he hits I can deal with the occasional ball getting through, however, anything hit to him is going to get caught and his throwing arm will get better with repetitions.  So if the Mets don't plan on signing DREW or going after FRANKLIN, then I'm all for FLORES getting the nod...QUINTANILLA will give you one game of 3-4, but most days he's going to go 0-4 and TEJADA, well he's a mess and can't hit.

I thought he was decent...a couple of balls hit near SS were difficult at best to get to, but he held his own.  It's his first game there so I suspect he had some butterflies...he's decent enough to start at SS.

hankypanky

He was lousy. He has no business playing ss.

@ac0814  Adam Rubin did a write-up of the game. He quoted a scout that said about Flores,"The game is too fast for him."

Brandon Hillman

@adam Ahh remember opening day in Cincy with Peter Harnisch. If he was on the staff TC would start him cause he's senior. Wheeler wants the nod, pitched just as good as the other guys. ST should be his audition. If he looks good, he gives you your best shot to win.

Seamus Oatis
Seamus Oatis

I totally agree with you, but Flores is a MAJOR liability at short. He had an error in the first and has grave range deficiencies, which were apparent throught the game.

I want to give Flores a shot, but I cringe at every ball hit up the middle.

Evil_MrM
Evil_MrM

@Richard Alicea I disagree that he'd even be an average shortstop, but I agree we shouldn't dismiss him after one game.  He'll have limited range, but he settled down a bit as the game wore on.  Considering our options, I'd give him a few more games there to see if he can improve a bit.

Tejada belongs on another team as a reclamation project...

Richard- I respect your opinion and would love to agree with it, but I watched Flores at SS today and it was uncomfortable. He was like Frankenstein out there. Like the kid, but Geez.

@ajshin27 @ac0814 Game one at SS in two years and he says the game is too fast for him. That is why rubin is beat writer and not a mlb coach.

Sam Mack
Sam Mack

I agree...his arm isn't strong enough either.

72tilltc

@ajshin27 @ac0814  Rubin knows nothing. Why not give an opinion. Does Terry know more he said Duda was doing a great job in the outfield. I think Terry is higher up on the chain than a scout so i take no stock. With Flores arm he can play deeper and get to more balls.

Zach Goeringer
Zach Goeringer

@ajshin27 @ac0814 It really is his range that's the problem. His transition and throw from the hole in short was better than I expected, but it took him a year to get to the ball. Tejeda's range isn't that great either in my opinion so it really still has to do with If Flores's offensive pros outweigh the defensive cons.

nymess

@Seamus Oatis  @Richard Alicea  reports out of Mariners camp about Franklin are sounding similar to complaints here about Flores. There are doubts about his ability to play short.

I'm with you, Rich. If another player isn't brought in here to play SS, which is looking more and more to be the case, then I say Flores continues to get a look there...which hopefully leads to him playing an adequate short and doing what he can do with the bat.

@Brandon Hillman @ajshin27 @ac0814 Why get on Rubin?  It wasn't his opinion, it was a scout.  And frankly, who cares whether it was Rubin or some nameless scout?  Its just an opinion- its on Flores to show the people who said he can't play SS they were wrong.
