Final Score: Mets 7 Braves 6

The Mets won in walk-off fashion on Thursday, beating the Braves 7-6.

Anthony Recker hit a walk-off three-run home run to win the game for the Mets.

Zack Wheeler got off to a rough start allowing two earned runs in the first inning, but that’s all he surrendered in his 5 1/3 innings. He allowed five hits, walked  one and struck out two.

Kyle Farnsworth was tagged for two earned runs in his inning of work.

Vic Black pitched a shutout inning, picking up one strikeout.

Ruben Tejada went 3-3 with a double, RBI and run scored.

David Wright, Chris Young and Juan Lagares, batting out of the ninth spot in the order, all drove in runs.

Ike Davis went 0-3 in his return to game action.

Back-ups didn't do well -- on both sides -- late here, except for Campbell ("SOUP"!) and Recker.  I like Recker as a back-up.

If Campbell starts at 1B, would that work?  Exposed to MLB pitching, sure, he might fall off, but what is the alternative now? I can see him having a good run at least in the short term & when that was over, you should be able to send him back down. Right now, given the options, I'll take Soup.

3-3, when pigs fly?  Tejada was doing that often enough not so long ago.  Lets stop freaking out about spring training games.

this was a spring training game.  meaningless.

let's see what happens by game 20.  i mean actual games.

90 wins with this team is ridiculous. 70 is more likely.

Lagares reminds me of Carlos Gomez with a little less pop

Young, Lagares and Grandy. EY gets a start to give "old man" Grandy a break from time to time. I'd even consider Matt DD coming North, but Brown provides another needed Righty bat off the bench.

I like what I have seen from the WRECKER (misspelled intentionally), this spring.

Chris Young is a sleeper. I really think he's gonna have a good year for us. Nobody realizes how well he has played this spring and i think his work with rod carew in the offseason will pay off. I believe he's playing with a chip on his shoulder and wants to prove he could still play

Really happy with Lagares this spring.

If d'Arnaud does not catch fire soon, like at least make some solid contact( I have attended 7 ST games in person), I'm just sayin'...Same thing with Duda, who went 0 for 6 today in a minor league game- and he did NOT even run the bases! Put the best team on the field in the present time frame. Do not go on reputation( d'Arnaud) --do not go on the past ( Ike), do not go on who lost the most weight up in the UP Boot Camp( Duda?!).

Go with the hot hand! And, btw, TC is losing my vote of confidence, trying to get Ruben Tejada going? He's 3 for 3 today & you take him out? WHY!? Shoulda left him in to go 4 for 4, etc!

Get tough, Mets, rub some dirt on it, lose the number of their agents and PLAY BALL!

No more 'made of glass' personnel on the field. LGM.

Am I the only guy out here who has every expectation that Farnsworth is going north with the club?

Sounds like Ike is in mid-season form!

I know it's only ST but I suspect that Recker will get a lot more playing time than people realize. I think he's a better defensive catcher than d'Arnaud for starters.

As for hitting, only time will tell.

abnormally exciting for ST. Wish it counted. Farnsworth and Davis suck so bad... both should be gone.

@doubleday I like that guy -- he seems to need to play regularly to do his best, which isn't great for a back-up player, but he is a nice little piece to have. Whenever I listen to him as well, he sounds like he knows his stuff, has baseball smarts.  And, doesn't hurt, has a cute wife.

Sorry, but Strawberry was never a "top notch defender". A one-man wrecking crew, yes, but an outfielder who always played back out of fear of a ball being hit over his head.

@Victor Triguero Yes and unfortunately it's the Mets manager Terry Collins who has an insatiable need to EY to be leading off for the Mets. So with Grandy getting $60M and CY promised 600ABs unless a spot opens up at 2B either due to injury or Murph starting at 1B Lagares will be the odd man out.

@Chris Lyons he does like pretty good out there. kind of envisioning a Marlon Byrd situation with him...maybe not the numbers Byrd put up last season, but with good production, he can be packaged and flipped at the deadline for some good prospects.

@ladymetfan  Great post . Totally agree with all your player analysis. One thing though, TC may only be losing your confidence now ? He shouldn't have anyone's confidence . It's actually amazing to me he has a job. All of our young position guys have gotten worse under him and we have done nothing but lose. He also makes horrible, horrible in game decisions. That's right . Double horrible. If we were good and games mattered, more people would be all over all the mistakes he makes. I know some people still like him and say look at what he's been giving and blah blah blah. Go say that to your own boss after 3 years and see if he just gives you a pass.  After Harvey went down, I knew TC was coming back. It's another way of this front office saying, wait another year. I don't believe TC will be the manager when Sandy believes it's time for them to actually win . ( and not just say 90 wins but be a 90 win team)

@Kendrick Melo  But Collins is an idiot for taking him out of a ST game after going 3-3 in a ST game.  Ahhh I love this place sometimes

@hankypanky Recker is hardly a better defensive catcher. That's what Travis is known for. Recker has some power, but remember he still hits for a low average and strikes out A LOT. d'Arnaud will come around, at least he's making contact. Tells me he's either wrapping or his timing is off a little.

nncyel

@hankypanky Agreed. But you should give him credit for his arm. Most RFs of course have a great arm but his was above average for the position.

@Brian Webster @Victor Triguero I am that guy! Lagares is a wonderful defensive player who reminds me of Beltran in the field.

However, on such an offensively-challenged team, the CF is going to need to produce more than Lagares has shown.

I was at the Harvey-Scherzer game last year where with the bases loaded and one out during the only Mets' rally, he took two fastballs down the middle and then swung at a ball over his head.

Needless to say, we are going to need more with the stick....hopefully, as a young player he will develop to ability to be a more complete player.

If you want to see the effects of this type of arrangement, look at Harvey's statistics versus his record last year.

@metsjetsdu @ladymetfan

I completely agree- Collins is just the luckiest guy in baseball right now- as soon as Harvey went under the knife, TC's job was solidified for another contract extension. They would have signed DREW also, IF it mattered, i.e. IF HARVEY was upright!

They(Wilpons) are finagling, conniving , procrastinators, who are more interested in presenting Jeter with the perfect 'going away' gift than they are with winning. Sick of them, sick of their business model, sick of the 'softness', perceived or real. I love my team, 52 Seasons worth of love....but, the brand is suffering, the next generation of Met Fans is NOT being infected with the Met-sickness like we were in 1962-1964, or even in 1986-ish. More choices via 500 TV channels, more sports to follow, more trash to consume. They are completely missing the boat when it comes to grooming new faithful fans. You gotta GRAB them. They got nothin', no personality, no oomph, no bravado. Yes, Harvey will be muzzled right now, but God help him when he comes back. They do not like larger than life personalities- see: Wally Backman! LGM.

@Dana Smith @hankypanky d'Arnaud is absolutely not known for his defense. Now he surprised people with how he performed defensively at the end of last season when he was finally able to play but he's always been touted first and foremost for his bat.

John Schod
John Schod

@hankincolo @John Schod There were many bad at bats last year....either too aggressive or not aggressive enough....maybe this will be a different year....we need players besides Wright, Murph and Byrd (from last year) to be rbi producers.

I am rooting for Lagares and all of the young players despite the lack of commitment by management.

How would this team look this year with Harvey and a $130m payroll? Answer: Rockin'

We deserve better!

hankincolo
hankincolo

@John Schod   Yes, I know it's only ST but he's batting .318 and his on base % is at .380. Let's not hold one bad AB against him.

Dana Smith

@Brian Webster @Dana Smith@hankypankyPitch framing and throwing out a runners are part of a catcher's defense. He's pretty good at those. He was definitely more touted for his bat, but he came up as a "solid all around catcher".
