The least you should know…
This was Niese’s first complete game since 2010 and second shutout of his career.
Niese also helped his own cause with a bases-clearing, three-run double. He also scored a run on a Daniel Murphy RBI single in the third.
Travis d’Arnaud added an RBI sac fly in the sixth inning.
The Mets snapped their five-game losing streak.

Andrew Vazzano, SNY.tvNiese’s start was breath of fresh air for this Mets team and their fans. It was great to see some stellar pitching out of him, as he is likely the de facto ace with Matt Harvey on the shelf. Just a terrific game against a weak Phillies lineup and an encouraging sign that his shoulder is no long an issue.
And I just love it when pitchers help their own cause with RBI. It’s fun to watch.
If I had a game ball to give, it would obviously go to Niese. Actually, I’d give him two… He single-handedly won the game tonight.
The Mets only had five hits all game, but got runs in when they could, mostly thanks to Niese’s double. But still, the way he pitched on the mound, just one run would have been enough.
