Who was right about Dice?  One man.  One spot. One Dice!

Who's your Daddy?  Oh, yeah!

And the Cards are a bunch of hitters!  He didn't walk through a bunch of ladies out there.....

What if Dice K has figured it out again? The guy knows how to pitch and earned that rotation spot. It's gonna take 8 or 9 SP's to get through a season unless we are incredibly lucky and everyone pitches well. Mejia will get his shot if he stays healthy. As for the outfield, all I know is we have 4 solid major league athletes. Last yr we trotted out Cowgill, Baxter and Byrd on opening day. Between injuries and slumps, the right 3 guys will wind up playing. It's a new season, this is a better team going in to the season then last year and I'm looking forward to it.

Mets face the Nationals in Viera on Tuesday ... nice fact-checking ...

Nice job by Matsuzaka. I don't understand the wailing and hair-pulling by the whiners. Mejia injured himself once again and may need a break. The timing for Matsuzaka starting is perfect.

While I totally agree with those who aren't too concerned with ST offensive numbers, we also have to admit that we aren't a good offensive team to begin with. There will be MANY games where we struggle to score more than 2 runs. We have 2 guys who will hit for a respectable average....and that's it. D'arnaud might but he's still iffy; the rest of the guys will not....its already a done deal.

Well, so much for Mejia as fifth starter. Hey, if Dice-K can help the team win then fine. He's a low-cost place-holder until the kids are brought up. But all things considered I would still rather see Mejia in the fifth spot.--as would roughly 90% of the fan base.

it appears that the Cardinals scored 3 runs yet Met pitchers allowed 1.

Wright also set up Granderson SF today with ground ball to right side. Practicing some fundamentals. Looks to me like his timing is a little off- very few swings and misses.

I know spring training "doesn't count" but, wow...are we in trouble or what?

Shortstops:

Tejada - .216 avg with a .275 OBP

Quintanilla - .182 avg with a .270 OBP

Seratelli - .195 avg with a .214 OBP

Others besides Murphy and Chris Young:

Wright - .182 avg

Duda - .200 avg

EYJ - .244 avg

Granderson - .195 avg

d'A - .154

I don't think the 'ol pitcher to the 8th spot switch-a-roo is going to generate the run support this staff will need...

Another 0-3 for David today.... his spring line is now .182/ 0 hr / 3 rbi.... is no one concerned?   I have a bad feeling that he's hiding another injury perhaps...    Can someone who watched the game describe how he looked at the plate, in the field, etc?   Thanks.

Give Black a break the guy was good when he was called up last season, he is still young with good stuff, Hopefully he turns it around start the season

What was Tejada's line?  Also, how does Dice-K go 6 innings giving up 1 and then 3 guys pitch a scoreless inning each?  Were there unearned runs?

"Daisuke Matsuzaka pitched six innings, let up one run and three hits, while striking out five batters."

"Let up" one run?  I thought it was "allowed" or "gave up" but I'm no blogger.

Black has to go to AAA, sorry, total hot mess right now.  Outside of that good game.  Pretty much the way the Mets need to win games was the way the won today.  Good starting pitching, fundies to get in runs with less than 2 outs.

Outside of Black looking lost, overall good game, good fundies.

@Evander Smart  Your happy for a guy who has an ERA of over 4 in Spring Training over one ( Mejia ) of only 2.89

@Evander Smart  It's the only thing to do, at least until May. If he's not effective, bring up Mejia.

@Evander Smart Looks like you called it.  I still don't agree with the decision to make Dice K the 5th starter, but let's see how he does.  Would love to be proven wrong about him.

@Evander Smart  He really pitched well today and you are right that was a good lineup we shut down.  I wonder if Holliday, Molina and Adams were playing how much would have been different.

@lindro88

He never had it in the first place. We are building a team to compete in 2015 and beyond. We have been sold this "next year is the year" schtick for a while. So considering the circumstances we are operating under there is no reason to have Dice-K as anything but sp insurance. His ceiling is a decent # 5. He goes out to pitch and you tell yourself "I just hope he doesn't get blown out", then if he's on top of his game he is in jams every inning or so, taking 40 seconds between pitches, and somehow tiptoeing his way to give up 2-3 earned runs in 5-6 innings.

Mejia's talent is by far superior. He has mid to top rotation stuff and is only 24 years old. Not to mention he has some MLB experience. Mejia should be playing from the start of the season on and if he gets hurt, well, it may be time to accept the fact he'll never be in our rotation. But if he's healthy right now he needs to be in the rotation. With the big 3, Gee and Neise going forward we don't have many holes to be filled, so why waste a spot in a lost season with an old scrub?

@sylow59 Pffft.  They don't bother themselves with trivial things like what actually happened in the game, how many guys are playing second or the actual opponent tomorrow.

John Paul Cullinane
John Paul Cullinane

@sylow59 I had the same Q below...then answered my own question...they left Black's line out which was 0 innings pitched and two runs given up.  They also left out Tejada's 0-2

Are you really putting up Wrights ST numbers?

hrvwlzthor
hrvwlzthor

Ur so full of crap, you say I know it's ST so u cite the bad numbers and u say besides Murphy and CY who are two of the most important pieces in the lineup and are having very good ST. So I guess their ST numbers don't count because their good and what about Ike, isn't he batting over .300 with some HR's and RBI's, so let's leave those numbers out. Just shut the hell up!

Dana Smith

@John Paul Cullinane Dude why are you worried about granderson and david wright? Duda has like 15 ABs. EYJ is going to the bench. d'Arnaud is getting close, he isn't striking out. He's making contact. You need to chill out.

anymos
anymos

@gcarter8 No one is concerned because he's David Wright.  Look at his career line, not his ST numbers.

nolrog
nolrog

@gcarter8 I'm not concerned.  Wright is a perennial .300 hitter over a 10 year career.  He didn't all of a sudden forget how to hit.  If it was a guy like Duda or Davis, I'd be much more worried (but even then, not so much.)  Some guys need the regular season to focus themselves.

Bo Beck
Bo Beck

@gcarter8 He didn't hit well last spring either give it a break, there's a lot of other meaningful stuff you should be concerned about.

Cheryl Ann Boogaard
Cheryl Ann Boogaard

Making good contact. Wind knocked down a potential HR yesterday. Strike out numbers look good. Few ground balls he may have beat out but I am sure they have him taking it easy in ST. Looks quicker with more range in field. With only 30 AB numbers can be easily skewed. Not sure TC plan to alter David's routine helped either.

@gcarter8  he doesnt k much and no i mean he sits a lot and see his spring training stats last year

ponzies86

@gcarter8  11 years in the league spring training is nothing for him, The guy isn't trying to pull up numbers when it doesnt count, I believe Jeter went Hittles so for this Spring Training I dont think Yankees fans are worried

@Max Blay  I missed the entire game due to work, wonder what all his haters on here were doing during today's outing?

anymos

@grillruben Mejia can get called up after the cutoff to retain control for another year- as he should be.  Not having him in the rotation for a half dozen starts isn't going to make or break our season. This is a team with a budget, you can get on board and try to understand why they try to do the things they do, or you can complain about it.  Might as well not give yourself heartburn over it.

@lindro88  I would say 99% hated the Byrd signing.

sylow59

@John Paul Cullinane @sylow59

i know.  But if they don't have the time/ambition/whatever to actually write about the game then they should at least explain all the scoring.

gcarter8
gcarter8

@ponzies86 @gcarter8   Are you suggesting that he's not trying to get base hits because he's a veteran and it's just pre-season?   That doesn't make any sense, nor does the comparison to Jeter, who turns 40 in June, is no longer expected to be a prominent part of his team's offense, is coming back from serious injury, and who is retiring after this season.

ponzies86
ponzies86

@gcarter8 @ponzies86  What im saying is relax dude its only Spring Training alot of star players this year arent exactly knocking the cover off the ball this spring
