As far as I'm concerned, Davis is the starting first baseman for the Mets come Opening Day. Neither guy has impressed me this spring - as a matter of fact, both have disappointed me - but from the little we have seen, Davis is the clear cut better option for first base. With an alleged battle raging for the first base job, neither guy showed he was hungry for the job & neither guy showed management that he can be relied on. When both guys have played, they have both hit relatively well. When it comes to hitting, I have a personal preference for Davis because I think his new approach - or rediscovered approach - is far more aggressive than Duda's approach. Duda is just a naturally passive hitter & that is why he hits around .230 & barely averages 2 RBI/HR. Regardless, both have hit well this spring. The difference comes down to defense, and Davis is a significantly better defender than Duda. Duda is a flat out liability in the field while Davis, when his head is in the game, could provide Gold Glove caliber defense. Terry Collins has come out & said that first base is a production position, not a defensive position. However, when you have a competition as close as the one with Davis & Duda, there needs to be a tiebreaker & to me that tiebreaker is defense. I also think it would be a mistake for the Mets to carry Duda on the 25-man roster up north. If the job goes to Davis, they should give him the chance to perform without having to worry about Duda getting a start over him after he goes 0-4 in a given game or 2-12 over a series. You can't expect a guy who has a history of being mentally weak to perform under that pressure. Duda has options & he should be sent down until at least June where at that point there can be a good assessment of where Davis is at. Also, Duda has no spot on this team if he loses the first base battle. The only value Duda would have is that of a LH pinch hitter. He isn't a defensive replacement & he certainly isn't a pinch runner. He's too one-dimensional to justify a roster spot.

Along the same lines, I think this platoon talk with Satin needs to stop. Davis is not a platoon-type player whatsoever. Davis needs consistent playing time; he needs 4-5 ABs per game & he needs to play 5-6 games per week. Now I wouldn't mind Collins sitting Davis once every other week in favor of Satin when there's a LH pitcher on the mound, but a strict platoon where Davis sits against all lefties would be a mistake. Davis is the type of player who needs at bats to get comfortable. Davis isn't the type of player that can be sat for a game when he is in the middle of a productive streak & then keep it going after his day off. If Davis is struggling a day off can't hurt, but he needs to be given the chance to work out of it without fear of being benched. There is no question that Davis struggled last season, but he is not far removed from a very productive, 30 HR season. He did that as the everyday guy, against both lefties & righties, and not as part of a platoon. With all due respect to Satin, he's a nice player, but he is not an everyday player & he isn't in the same league as Davis when Davis is on. The same goes for Duda; he's not in the same stratosphere as Davis when Davis has it all together.

As a side note, I REALLY, REALLY like what I have seen from d'Arnaud this spring. I think he is going to have a very nice season this year (.275 / 20 / 75) & put himself back on the map. I think he is going to put himself in a position to completely explode in 2015 & be a huge part of the success for the Mets in 2015 & beyond. I just implore Mets fans to be patient with him this season & don't jeer him relentlessly if he comes out of the gate a little slow or if he hits a skid at some point early in the season. I can guarantee you that he will put any early season struggles behind him & hit a really good groove come July & finish strong. Remember, he was the cornerstone of the Dickey trade & we have to be patient with him & not expect Buster Posey.

Finally, I am beginning to feel more comfortable with the clusterfrig we have at shortstop. I am resigned to the fact that the Mets are going with Tejada to start off the season, but we all know he isn't the answer there. I like what I am seeing from Flores this spring & he is looking adequate with the glove. I wish Flores was coming up north as the starting SS, but he will be sent to Vegas to play SS everyday there. After a month or two of Tejada crapping the bed, Flores will come up & take his spot. I am extremely comfortable with that & I am actually looking forward to it. Flores has produced at every level he has been at & after getting his taste last year, he knows what to expect & I think he will be ready for the challenge. I have been dying to see a Mets team without both Lucas Duda & Ruben Tejada on it for over a year now. I am thrilled that it could actually be happening now. The fact that the front office may actually be seeing that those two guys are garbage is a very encouraging sign & it has me more excited about the future of this team than any trade could at this point. It is about damn time that the Mets start rewarding players for their performance & stop rewarding mediocrity & underperformance.

Listened to the Mets game, then watched baseball all the way thru the LA-Arizona game in Australia.. I'm in mid-season form. Let's get to Opening Day already!!

Ike/Satin platoon makes too much sense to even consider anything else. Send Duda to AAA unless someone wants him for a prospect. Let Flores platoon with Tejada at SS.

our lineup should be- Chris Young, murphy,  wright, granderson, ike,  flores, lagarese, d'arnaud, pitcher

UMMM, Mets are NOT playing the Braves in Orlando tomorrow.

I am holding tickets in my hand for tomorrow's game against the Nationals at Tradition Field

Was there a report on how Flores performed at SS today?

Only problem I see with the Mets not winning 80- games is the Bullpen and hopefully the offense comes thru this season

People done crying about Chris Young yet? This was a very good move by Alderson.

I have been saying ALL year. Right now Wilmer Flores should play FIRST BASE everyday. Move Davis BEFORE he implodes again. Duda to Bench/Minors. If flores plays everyday and bats 5th he will have 85 to 100 RBI's. He could bookend Wright in the infield for years to come. If Davis has his usual great Spring move him now BEFORE he implodes.

Even though it may not matter b/c we know Tejada is TC's guy does anyone know how did Flores do in the field,  his range and if he made the plays he supposed to.   At the very least hopefully he gets more playing time this SPR and gives us hope that he's going to go down and start in PSL at SS.  Hopefully, he can adapt to the position, similarly to the way Murphy adapted to 2nd against critics.

People saying move Wright for Flores lol wow over one game.

Ike Davis is looking REALLY good lol. Hes still got the hitch but that swing is much cleaner.

Really want to see flores in the lineup everyday.

Trade Ike, Duda to the bench than have Wright and Flores interchangeable between 1B, 3B and DH. Flores can not be sent down under any circumstances. Nothing left to prove in AAA. Play him everyday, bat him 5th and he will have 85 to 100 RBI.

I would like to be able to see the stats for all the players. This blog used to link the names of players to their stats page

I think you have to at least platoon Lagares with EY and Satin with Davis otherwise I agree.

@Kevin Joseph Patrick Suggestion and I appreciate your passion. I suspect most people are going to see how much you wrote and not bother to spend the time to read all of it. That's also a shame since you obviously took a lot of time to write it. Regardless, brevity is best.

@Bo Beck  Lol, yes Bo, B/C spring training is such a good indicator of the regular season.  Let's wait 100 games into the season to deem this a good or bad move.

adam

@Bo Beck  little premature don't you think??? Very good move???? At 7 million, he better hit .260/20/75..if Sandy grows some balls and cuts Duda, that would be a good move..

Kevin Joseph Patrick

Keep saying that into next year because no one is going to pay attention to you. You have a better chance seeing Eli Manning playing CF than Flores at first & Davis gone. Davis looks solid this spring & he is not far removed from a 30 HR season. The only way that he implodes is if fans like you don't give him a fair shot to perform this year. He is the best option we have at first base, by far, and so long as the Mets & the fans give him a chance to play, he will do just fine. The guy who should be gone is Duda; he's complete garbage. No minors, just unemployment.

eric88
eric88

Ike hit over .300 each of last two springs. Then when the pressure starts he stinks like rotten fish last two years. Ike is a headcase. Move him now, before he tanks the entire 1st half again.

Kevin Joseph Patrick
Kevin Joseph Patrick

I couldn't agree more. We will see him at Citi Field soon, but unfortunately it isn't going to be at the beginning of the season like it should be. Tejada will play the first month or two, and Flores will play everyday at SS in Vegas. Once Tejada flops & Flores plays well in Vegas, Flores will get sent up to SS & will be there everyday for the foreseeable future. At that point the Mets should DFA Tejada, but I think he will stick around because the Mets are making a mistake by putting Seratelli on the 25-man roster, he's not that good. Flores will be at short, Tejada will be moved to the bench as the utility infielder, and Seratelli will be DFA'd. Then again, the Mets may then realize that they will never get anything out of Tejada & that he needs a change of scenery to save his career. Plus, Seratelli has shown versatility by being able to play the OF. You never know, it could be Tejada DFA'd. I have been dying to see a Mets team without Lucas Duda & Ruben Tejada, and come June that might actually be the case. I am pumped at that prospect.

Agreed. With Flores in the lineup, I'm looking forward to watching this team everyday.

@rodd Flores arm can't make the throws either, he stays there until the next 3b prospect comes along.

Give me a break.

Imagine if we had Zimmerman at third who wasn't even able to throw it within 20 feet of first base last year.

@rodd  Accuracy.  He has a hose, just not accurate. I love the guy, but have held my breath for years. I always said he should go to 1st as he begins to lose it. He has not...

Ian Carvalho

@mystere24  Lagares needs to be playing every day. I don't care how fast EYJ is, he doesn't get on base enough to warrant playing him over arguable one of the best, young, defensive CF'ers in the national league. EYJ is a bench player, a decent one, but still a bench player.

Jamie Funktual Freund

@nc95 @Jamie Funktual Freund  hahaha I was just about to EDIT this comment.  There are indeed 2 games tomorrow.  Luckily in my game I get to see Mejia as opposed to John Lannan in Orlando.  Hopefully the vets will stay off the bus!!

@Bo Beck @eric88Flores' bat needs to be in Queens. If you think he can't hit major league pitching you are the one who is insane.

bklyndude

@eric88

Pitchers are just trying to build up arm strength in the spring and throwing the ball around the plate.   Once the season starts,  they begin expanding the strike zone and get hitters with very little discipline to chase pitches.

Because Ike has such a long swing,  he is affected more by good pitching.  Make a mistake in his zone,  oh my........bye, bye.

tw22

@joemets Neither one of them have the arm for third. But your not moving Wright for any reason at this point.

I am not a big fan of TC and I can see why many other fans feel the same way. The idiocy of not leaving Lagares as your regular CF is simply asking for EY to get the brunt of the fans ire when he does not do well - which will happen at times to most players. Not a slight at EY, but very obvious that TC had his mind made up from the beginning. Odd managing. Very Met-like.

Hey...leave Edgardo alone. He was a clutch player for the Mets. One of my all time favorite Mets.

@tw22 @beardedone@rodd Only idiots find a way to bash the organizations best player for a minor league player whose accomplished absolutely nothing. And people wonder why other teams fans laugh at Mets fans.
