Nice to see the back-end of the bullpen in mid-season form.  I have two depressing predictions:  Farnsworth will be back by June 1. Bobby Parnell will suffer some sort of quirky setback and Valverde will become closer-by-default (which nobody wants to see). Had hopes for Vic Black but the guy pulled a Bordick.

On a side note, it's really good to see Lagares going 3-4 yesterday. He's hitting .302 with a .362 obp. What do you all think? Will this satisfy Terry to at least giving the starting gig to Juan, at least for the start of the season?

Our starting pitching should be solid, but it was disconcerting to watch our bullpen struggle against a AA team like the Astros. We were pinning lots of our middle relief hopes on Vic Black and that speaks volumes about the condition of our bullpen. If we don't get career offensive years from 3 or 4 guys, it will likely be a long, dull summer.

Our strength is pitching.  We need at least one more professional hitter, probably two, to have a lineup representative of a contending team.  Hopefully, the pitchers we trade are the ones who bring back the most value to address needs on the field.  The days of weighting decisions based on who's cheap or has the lowest salary should be over.  The Madoff debacle was years ago.  The bad contracts have expired.  The loan from MLB was refinanced.  Therefore, the Wilpons' grace period is over.  They must return to running this organization like the big-market team the Mets are.  Otherwise, I'm all for an investigation by MLB.

Preview of 2014, Good starting pitching, then the bullpen blows it. Sandy did not address the bullpen

For those who insist that we shouldn't trade Gee...a few quick thoughts: if he pitches the way we've seen him be capable of pitching in the past, he's better than any other pitcher currently on our team and a legit #2 type pitcher on a lot of teams in baseball; he is the type of guy who could net us 2 good prospects or one really good prospect at the deadline....guys like niese and colon probably wont. Also, is we do keep him and he has a really good year don't be surprised to see his contract skyrocket next year to around the 6-7 mill range, which the Mets might not want to pay. Lastly, we have developed good young pitching with the knowledge that eventually we'd need to trade from a strength in order to improve a weakness....why trade away a Montero or other young, CHEAP talent, when the Mets have the chance to shed significant future payroll by getting rid of Gee, who will soon be getting paid?

Looking at it from the Mets perspective I definitely see Gee, if he is pitching really well and we are doing our normal disappearing act in July, getting dealt.

Wow Met fans way to be positive, as always. The Bullpen, as is with about 90 percent of the league, a work in progress. But there are serious positives to this group. I think Torres is a great long man in the pen. Lannans going to be huge in his role. Familia's time to shine is here. Rice is going to have to be outstanding again this year, he's the key to the pens success IMO. Valverde should be entertaining, if nothing else. Parnell is proven. So what's the issue? Two young right handers battling for the final bullpen spot? Could be a lot worse, and definitely has been.

I have been saying it all year. Gee is a bulldog. He can be part of a championship type team. Great under pressure. He is our ACE depending on what Wheeler turns into. Niese, soft underachiever. Never fulfilled potential. Don't like him in a big spot. Mets continue to overate him. League hit . 280 against him, K's way down, more hits than innings. Arm is a Time bomb.

In July I would trade him to a contender for offense {SS, !B}.

Season getting close so Ike was 0 for 4 with two strikeouts. Here we go again.

Gee was dominant, as long as our pitching is good, we'll be in games and have a shot.

How good a Spring is Anthony Recker having?

Have to root for the underdog....a Mets fan's endearing quality!

We could basically see a trade of anyone or multiple players on the Mets but 5 guys - Wright, Granderson, Harvey, Wheeler, Syndergaard:

Pitchers: Lannan, Dicke-K, Gee, Niese, Colon, Montero

Outfield: EYJ, C. Young, Lagares

Catcher: d'A, Plawecki

1B: Duda, Davis

2B: Murphy

SS: Nobody wants ours, but an addition will be needed

I love how with roughly 100 ABs people are ready to call Travis D a bust. C isn't an easy position as shocking as this may sound sometimes it takes a player a couple of years. As much as ownership is too blame, fans are equally as much to be blamed. They make it impossible for players to succeed here sometimes, which is why so many leave and blossom elsewhere.

nice to see our great first basemen went a combined 1 for 8, great job Ike 0-4! I'll say it again, put Duda, Ike and Tejada on a ship and sink it!  Please make a trade for Franklin or dig deep in your pockets and sign Drew...Fred!

Future mets rotation:

1. Matt Harvey

2. Noah Syndegaard

3. Zack Wheeler

4. Dillon Gee

5. Somebody else maybe Matz if he can develop but trade Montero for SS

Who cares about Spring results, but Carlos Torres scares the crap out of me.  His stuff is so weak it feels like he's going to have his share of blowups.

Quintanilla with an 0-4 day...man, between him or Tejada it's like watching NBA teams tank with the worst one getting the prize.

guys its cool we have those days before bullpen threw a shout out its just patient and we are learning who is good and not

I wonder if the manager of the Astros was saying, "we scored 9, but it was only against the Mets."

Dillon Gee went six no hit innings. He would have stayed in if this was a regular season game. Take positives out of these spring games.

John Paul Cullinane

I like Gee a lot...but I think it's safe to say he'll be traded in July...and it's probably the right move if he's pitching decently.

@yankeehater  Every staff needs a Veteran leader. Colon 10 mil per will be gone. Neise, leader? Not Quite. Gee stays.

@mikesml And Ike is the 4th highest paid player on the team!  Duda at least earns 1/6 as much.

Dice-K won't stick around if he's not a starter.

I don't see any reason to trade Colon, and I don't think they will.

eric88

@nyjnym  Some of my corrections. Wright misses time but still gets 80 RBI. Legares hits .255, Wins GG. Niese has losing record and yes, misses at least ten. Dice K gone by May 30. Agree with 6,7,8. Flores by May 20. Ten is correct.

The fans are to blame for 5 years of losing baseball? We are just as much to blame as the Wilpon? That is a hoot.

John Paul Cullinane
John Paul Cullinane

@Dave Kaye If he gets off to a decent start and there is still a lot of hype around him as a prospect, do you sell high or keep him and develop him more?  Do you roll with Plawecki or trade him instead?

@Victor Triguero Juan Lagares is NOT a 5 tool talent.  C'mon...he can field and he can throw and that's it....and that's OK.  If he can put up even league average offense, he is a huge piece here.

Dana Smith
Dana Smith

@archer41 Probably. Pretty typical, our starter deals, we score 6 runs, still lose because the bullpen coughs it up.

Brian Webster
Brian Webster

Except the same thing can and will happen in the regular season where the starter is good and the bullpen gives it up which can and will be draining on the team and the fans.

Why trade him I don't get it, I rather trade niese or colon

stemog
stemog

@Olerud42 You're right. He hasn't done it for a long enough period. Right now he's a good No. 2 or a very good No. 3 on a contender. On this staff, he's an ace.

Olerud42
Olerud42

@buddyryan  No. But fans are stupid. They want youth and then complain when the youth don't produce in their first 5 minutes with the team. But that's not usually how youth works

rubiconx0
rubiconx0

@Mike Dell Italia Dont worry, this team is too scared and too willing to hang on to their garbage to make any trades!

John Paul Cullinane
John Paul Cullinane

@Mike Dell Italia Agreed...but other teams may want him more than Niese or Colon.  I have full confidence that Colon's career will be done in July anyway.

Either way, I see two of the following being traded by the deadline: Niese, Gee, Colon, Montero

Olerud42
Olerud42

@stemog @Olerud42  If you're defining ace as #1 pitcher (not how I would define it), then I would say Colon is this staff's ace based on everyone's recent numbers.  Well, Harvey is, but he's not pitching obvi.

John Paul Cullinane
John Paul Cullinane

@rubiconx0 @Mike Dell ItaliaYou would think that they'd do something mid-season to get fans in the seats because I feel as though Citi Field will be crickets again as we, fans, wait for the Winter Meetings again...
