Fernando Rodney (BARON)

Fernando Rodney Rumors: Mets, Orioles, and Mariners showing serious interest

The Mets, Orioles and Mariners are all showing serious interest in free agent RHP Fernando Rodney (Nightengale, Feb. 4).

The Mets are still looking for a closer-type for the bullpen, even after signing Kyle Farnsworth on Monday (Rubin, Feb. 3). However, Sandy Alderson said last week he’s more likely to limit free-agent relievers to minor-league deals (DiComo, Jan. 29).

The Mets have been looking for relievers who have experience closing, not just to deepen their bullpen but to provide insurance to Bobby Parnell in case he doesn’t return to form. Rodney certainly fits the criteria for what they were originally looking for, although I wonder if they have more confidence in Parnell’s abilities today than they did earlier in the off-season. Unless the Mets are looking to make Parnell a setup man, I can’t see Rodney ultimately joining the Mets with other opportunities to close elsewhere.

You mean to tell me that after that huge signing of Kyle Farnsworth, the Mets are still looking for bullpen help? Wow, the Mets were not kidding about spending money this offseason. Champs in 2014 for sure. Thanks Sandy for all you have (not) done in your term as General Manager

The Braves sign their 1B for an 8 year, $135 million contract. They sign their right fielder for two years and $13.5 million. The Mets? They lower their payroll despite having $53 million come off the books this offseason. That's why Atlanta competes and the Mets are lucky to win 75 games.

People are saying he is Frank Francisco 2 because he is Hispanic lol.

If you pay them, they will come.

Seriously, if I'm Rodney, I'll take an opportunity to pitch. Are you kidding? It's February and he doesn't have a job. These players need to get some sense...

You can never have to much pitching. Rodney probably wont cost much money, otherwise the Mets would not be interested. He is a good insurance policy if Parnell is not back to where he was last year. I do think Parnell is our closer of the future so Rodney on a one year deal would be a good pick up for them.

@metsblog I'm going to go out on a limb here and say the Mets find a way to come up short.

If Rodney and Drew gets signed I'd call this a pretty good offseason.

No. We don't need any more bullpen help. They say there is this "need" for bullpen arms, but we already have plenty of options. Signing Rodney guarantees him as the closer. Parnell is the closer. End of story. Parnell did a fine job last season. They need to start using younger arms for the bullpen, instead of spending millions on veteran arms who rarely seem to work out.

It should be in his contract that he has to wear his hat straight. Seriously though, im all for this signing. I hope they sign Rodney and Drew. That would mean a good offseason, imo.

I wonder if the Mets have enough money to get Drew and Rodney, I also hope they take a serious look at the cuban SS as well.  They just need to have more SS options.  After the news of the refinancing of their loan I wonder if the Mets FO is trying to make a statement here...but does that mean they get both or just one?  Of course, we all assume it will be none lol.  LETS GO MET!

If mets want to truly have any shot at getting fans to return to citi they will go get Rodney and Drew, if they show they care about winning now fans will support them from day one, if they do little to nothing before the season begins it will be just like the last 5 years. Wilpons, spend some more and bring in proven major league talent to start turning this organization around.

The Mets have repeatedly gotten burned on guaranteed contracts to veteran RPs. From Frankie Frank to Rauch, Marcum, Atchison, Aardsma, and others, they have yet to strike gold. The best RP pickup they've had in the Alderson regine was Hawk, who was NOT guaranteed, but won a job in ST.

Then he went out and had a terrific season, but wasn't re-signed. Just like Marlon Byrd. Way ta go, Blunderson!

Call me crazy but I think the Mets have a certain amount left to spend and it'll go to drew or 1 or 2 veteran bullpen arms.. I hope it goes to drew, Rodney screams frank Francisco to me, even though he's had 100 times better years than francisco could ever dream

how many times do i have to say this...if they get Rodney it is to be the closer not for insurance for parnell...if they get kevin Gregg HE will be insurance for parnell...two different animals here

@Joseph Baffi Relax. Young got a one-year deal. If he doesn't work out he'll be gone by July. And what exactly was Nelson Cruz going to do in that spacious outfield?

@jlga The Braves signed guys who are already on their team. They were gonna be on the team regardless of the new contracts. Two different situations you're talking about. Just because the Mets payroll should be much higher, and I agree it should, guys aren't just dying to come to the Mets unless we overpay bigtime. Most of the available guys aren't worth an overpay.

Exactly where did you see that? There were a couple references but not had to do with both being Latino.

True dat, but neither is happening.

@Dana Smith We need plenty of bullpen help and Bobby Parnell isn't all that. A team that wants to win in the NL has a much better chance with a strong bullpen. Our bullpen needs help and is better with Rodney closing and Parnell setting up.

@bill metsiac  Yeah except Byrd is 36 years old and has a career year at age 35 and after a PED suspension. Does that sound like a player you would want to re-sign for another 2 seasons? The whole idea is to get younger, not older. Marcum wasn't a relief pitcher when they signed him and had the best road ERA in the majors in 2011 and 2012. Atchison and Rauch weren't bad and Aardsma was a veteran's minimum pickup. Stop comparing them to Fernando Rodney.

Either way Hawk wasn't worth 2.5 million dollars. Not at 40 years old, with relievers being so bipolar for the most part. You might to educate yourself on players and stats before you start with the hyperbole.

@Marky Mark  If you think Rodney is Frank Francisco than you haven't been watching Fernando Rodney pitch in Tampa with postseason pressure on him. He's better than you are giving him credit for and can be a solid 8th inning shutdown reliever/alternative closing option.

@sosh agree...i know it's not sexy, but they signed farnsworth now go out and get kevin Gregg...use the money allotted for rodeny and get drew or cruz or morales...some sort of offense

@Mike  I said he's 100 times better, but it wouldn't shock me personality wise if he all the sudden became lazy and unmotivated like fransisco clearly did

I agree but he's a veteran closer who could be sign for a year or two. Parnell is not ready to take the closer job.

Mike

@Marky Mark @Mike  Parnell showed he was ready last year as the closer. He was fine.

I don't see why Rodney would do that. He could have done so in Tampa and instead was the best closer in baseball in 2012 and a solid one again last year. His stuff is light years ahead of Franciscos.

Mike Dell Italia
Mike Dell Italia

@javy180  ehh parnell was the closer and was great.  I want and experienced guy to add to the mix, but i think if parnell is healthy and ready to go he will be the closer
