Eric Young stepped directly on Tim Hudson’s ankle during a bang-bang play at first base Wednesday against the Braves.
Hudson immediately hit the ground in pain. Young stayed on the field with him the entire time until he was carted off.
“I apologized to him, told him it was an accident, I obviously wasn’t trying to hurt him on the play,” Young explained to reporters after the game, according to ESPN New York. “He just told me to keep my head up and keep playing the game the hard way, the right way. He said there was nothing I can do about it. That made me feel somewhat better, but still bummed that he’s going to be out for a while.”
Young said Hudson’s wife talked to him after the game as well, and also put him at ease.
Hudson suffered a fractured ankle and will have surgery, ending his season.
