Eric Young on deck

Eric Young Jr. may soon be headed to the bench

Terry Collins said Thursday that rotating Eric Young Jr.Chris Young, Curtis Granderson and Juan Lagares is not a permanent solution.

“I don’t mind it for a while,” Collins said. However, “I think in the long run you’ve got to have three guys you’re going to run out there.”

Eric Young Jr. was not in Thursday’s starting lineup.

“He would be a guy that you’d like to have to come off the bench because of versatility,” Collins said, pointing out that Eric Young Jr. can play all three outfield positions, as well as second base, he can switch hit, provide speed, and be a pinch-hitter late in games. “It’s nice to have those guys over there.”

Sure he hasn't been hitting like we would like but he's been getting on base and scoring, stealing bases, and doing better than last year in the field. Gets sat down for the money players. Could ruin the guy for the rest of the year.

Now you're thinking Terry. EY - the 4th OF.

Mets are going to have to find a way to put 6 plus on the board every game the rest of this series, or they are going to get swept. Anyone who looked at the Rockies as a "soft spot" in the schedule, isn't paying attention. These guys kill it at home. Maybe they get a break and Cargo misses tonight's game. Probably won't matter. I'm not getting down on them after a loss, I'm just being realistic. Tonight they need to jump on DeLaRosa.

OK, here's an official Red Flag:

TC (alone, or w/SA) has now created a track record of a number of times of making a final decision publicly, then reneging on it within 6 - 48 hrs. & going in a different direction. That simply has to be driving the players nuts. It's driving ME nuts, and my job & livelihood are not impacted.

TC: "OK, I've decided it's going to be THIS way. Period. HE'S the guy!"

Post-game: "No, I'm not contradicting myself, I always planned on playing the OTHER guy a lot, too! Tomorrow just seems right. We'll see how it goes."

This is a GREAT clubhouse, but Terry could be undermining it without realizing it...

They can be disappointed, Terry, they're grown men, but not trusting what the hell is going on from day to day has got to be maddening!

Wow. Terry Collins is saying something that makes sense! I'm scared. What's happening?

EY is great leading off because of his speed, but he doesn't get on base then it doesn't matter much. At least off the bench he can be a pinch runner late, and he can play outfield and 2nd as needed.

Granderson won't have a chance to pick things up if he's on the bench. He needs to play. Not to mention the big contract.

As we have heard from every baseball analyst over the past 50 years, you can't steal first base. EY does hustle. But the whole 'plays four positions' (none of them well) argument reminds me of a mediocre pitcher who is lauded for being an 'innings-eater.' What KIND of innings? EY would be a luxury on a team that could hit. This team has shown no such ability.

I like lagaress but when young gets on he scores runs. his 220 average doesnt bother me much because his obp is around 330. he has 20 runs scored in 25 games.

This offense needs some body to get on base at the lead of spot and get into scoring postition.  It is not an offense based on power hitting.

Well then TC, I think the prudent thing to do is wait and not be decisive and not make any decisions on a starting OF until, you know, someone gets hurt.

It's about time!!! Why we sent Nieuwenhuis down and kept EY here is a head shaker. He's got more power, is a better fielder, almost as fast and....YOUNGER!! It's time to say goodbye to a guy with a .220 average, NO power, and on pace for 150 k's. Bring up with den Decker or Nieuwenhuis NOW and stop wasting their options. While we're at it bring up Flores and drop him at SS the rest of the season!!

So we should probably see EYJ in the lineup the rest of the Rockies series and 2 of 3 in Fla.

4th outfielder, back-up second baseman, pinch runner, occasional pinch hitter, first in line to start on a regular basis if any of the outfielders or murphy gets injured or has to sit out a day or two for any reason.

That is plenty of playing time and a plenty large enough role for EY to play. He and everyone should be more than happy with that.

thwacker

EY is in the top 5 of the NL in stolen bases.  He has generated runs on his own.  He is contributing something, Grandy is not.

So a day ago Terry held a meeting with these 4 guys explaining The Outfield Rotation... and a day later he reverses course.  If I had a buck for every time he did that I'd be able to buy the Mets

gotta make sure you keep Granderson and his .217 SLG% in the lineup.

EY was a nice pickup we got him for nothing but lets face it on a good team he is nowhere to b e found. .

Personally I see Eric Young as more of a pinch runner more so than pinch hitter. His OBP just isn't that good, but if you pinch hit Abreu and then can put EY in to run late in a game, that is a nice combo!

So after only 1 game, he is already changing his mind.  This is why no one believes anything you say Terry. You change so quickly that everyone knows anything you said is complete BS.

unrelated but degrom is 4-0 with a 1.89 era pitching in Las Vegas, pretty good

I don't care what they do as long as Lagares is the everyday centerfielder.  The Mets are not going to contend this year and he appears to be part of the future.  There is a good chance both the Youngs are not on the team next year.  Granderson is a mess.  We can only hope this is not Jason Bay part II.

How much better off would this team be today with Shin Choo OF and Abreu 1B along with Montero, for the same money as Grandy and Colon (older players as well).

Ben Russak

@bigdirty  -- I have to disagree with you here.

in 1/2 the plate appearances:

Lagares: 8 R, 7 extra base hits, 8 RBI, 28 TB, 14 SO

EYoung: 20R, 3 extra base hits, 4 RBI, 25 TB, 28 SO

Yes, EY walks more, but Lagares still has a higher OBP (.356 to EY's .321)

and SLG/OBP/OBP+ is no comparison:

JL  .509/.865/145

EY .269/.590/ 72

Not to mention incredibly superior fielding...

How can you justify sitting Lagares over EY?

@Victor Triguero One game doesn't prove or disprove anything but yes...EYJ shouldn't be starting more then twice a week or so if someone needs a rest.

@thwacker EY lead the league in stolen bases but was still one of the worst hitters in all of baseball last year.  Speed doesn't cancel eveyrthing out.  Lagares did more in his abs yesterday then EYJ has done in a week.

@thwacker Grandy in the 1st month of a 4yr $60M contract is not a viable option to be benched

@thwacker  That's true, and I agree with you, but we both know Grandy is a much superior baseball player.

@MMIAA  We actually gave up Colin McHugh.  He pitched decent for the Rockies and now he is on the Astros and pitched a gem last time out.

@Chad Snaider  It's time to promote or acquire a power bat.  We will be out of the race by June if we don't do something to improve the major league ball club.

@11gilkey It may not be -- Granderson might not get up to Bay's lofty levels.

@eric88 Choo is on a 7 year $130 million contract. Abreu has worked out so far but there were a lot of question marks about both how his swing would translate to MLB and if he could play first base. Let's see where these contracts are a year or 2 from now.

zoddie

Exactly. When pitching staffs were 10 guys, you could have a pinch runner. At 12, usually not. EY will still get in there.

zoddie

@upstater @eric88 What about them?  Their numbers at the plate are pretty close and Chris Young is better in the field, better on the bases, is much younger, and is signed for 1 year instead of 2.

@#Knickstape @Chad Snaider

But you are right Knickstape, and backup 1B is not what you are talking about.
SS is the spot to upgrade right now.

@BringBackDaveTelghe @Graciasparce  you can say the same to Grandy....

It is true that he has question marks, but also everybody says that he is the best pure hitter coming from Cuba in years..... (Puig, Cespedes, etc) Now the mets hope is that Stanton, Tulo or someones else is available. We desperate a #4 hitter.

BringBackDaveTelghe

@Graciasparce The season is 162 games.  Wait until pitchers start pitching him inside before thinking he's the next coming of Albert Pujols.
