Eric Young 7 (Baron)

Eric Young Jr. at 2B, Murphy at 1B?

Mets OF Eric Young Jr. took infield practice at second base before Tuesday’s game (Wall Street Journal, Mar. 18). Eric Young will start at second base on Tuesday.

Terry Collins said in February that, in the event Ike Davis and Lucas Duda are not playing first base, he could always move Young to second and slide Daniel Murphy to first base.

“It’s not a defensive position, it’s a production position,” he explained (TC Palm, Feb. 4) about his goal for first base. “We have options.”

Collins has also repeatedly said that he would like to get Young consistent at bats because he has the ability to change the team’s offense (Kernan, Feb. 3).

No love for Flores. Why not leave Murph at 2B and play Flores at 1B since hitting is his forte? Or at least start Flores at 2B if Murph moves to 1B. Keep EYJ as a super utility guy on the bench. I'm just not understanding the lack of trust in Flores. Especially when they straight up say it's not about defense but production.

Release Davis, send Duda down to AAA, move EY Jr. to 2b, move Flores to SS, play Lagares in CF. Best offensive lineup and best defensive lineup in the OF at least:

1. EY Jr - 2b

2. Murphy - 1b

3. Wright - 3b

4. Granderson - RF

5. C. Young - LF

6. Flores - SS

7. Lagares - CF

8, d'Arnaud - C

9. Pitcher

I love this idea--go with it!

EY JR is not the answer at 2nd base...why not give Flores the shot and move Murphy to first...that would be a more productive infield.  I'm not convinced  of EY JR...don't understand what Collins sees in him.  I watched 95% of the games last year and EY JR is below average offensively and his defense a bit above average with speed which translates into a bench player not a starter.

At this point, just try to get some decent prospects out of Duda, put murph at 1B, young at 2B, and let Davis keep working out until he can't anymore. We need people who can be productive in the lineup. I don't want to give up on Davis yet so keep him in PSL for the first few weeks of the season and see how he does.

@metsblog ...and the inevitable finally comes to pass. Team should've been working this angle since camp began.

These poor pitchers

BringBackDaveTelghe
BringBackDaveTelghe

So a team with very little offense to begins with puts a 2b at 1b, who can't hit a lick when compared to other 1b.  And doing this brings in one of the worst regulars in all of baseball from 2013.  Yeah, this is a great plan.

Bob Burket

I could live with Murphy at 1B and EY at 2B.

mike23

That defense with murphy at 1b and EYJR at 2b would be tough to watch.

There have been worse suggestions. They should try it.

Lets be honest. this team has most of the poor ballplayers that  have been here over the last 3 years. Until that changes, nothing changes.

People this is a temp solution and fine for two weeks. Murphy plays first against rightys is and second against leftys for first two weeks why BOTH duda and davis stay back and get more at bats. You bring either of these guys up north at start of season and they will fail. Hitting is all about timing. Don't get that in cages but with abs. Teams make adjustments like this all time with injuries. Yes Murphys bat does not profile at first but this is not for the entire year. Jesus.

I was so against this, but it's starting to make sense only b/c of the la-la land the Mets have been in the last few years. They'll have speed at the top of the line-up, Murphy's hitting, good outfield defense, maybe a resurrection year from Chris Young, and neither of us have to suffer watching Ike or Duda, and hope for a bounce back from either.

so EYJ as an option on this team is ahead of Flores? ...or does this scenario also have Flores at SS? I wonder what Terry is thinking.

Murphy sux 1st is a power position which he has none of

Terry said about 1st base, "it's a production position  , we have options". What has this guy been watching for 3 years, what options??

drmetfan

EYJ 2b

Murphy 1b

Wright 3b

Granderson RF

Flores SS

Young LF

Lagares CF

D'Arnaud C

That should be the opening day lineup. Give. The current roster this lineup Gives us a better shot at winning.

Eric young is not an everyday player.  He is a good ball player but he is not the everyday guy this team needs.

@Tiffany Lesnick This is a very confusing and contradicting post.

Zac Tindall

Murphy is the teams best contact hitter he doesn't have much pop but James loney doesn't either yeah all first baseman should have some pop but if Flores takes SS his bat covers it

Richard Alicea

That is a recipe for disaster...don't want to watch a team with a 9th hitter from the 5th hitter on down...

Alan J Tepper

@mike23 Even worse when you factor in Flores at SS!  This is a far cry from Olerud/Alfonzono/Ordonez/Ventura.

Ed Yano

Let's be honest.None of the 3 starting OF have been on the team for a full season.( No matter which 3it is) The catcher doesn't have a full year.3of the 5starters don't have a year. The setup man, whoever he is, doesn't have a year.Yes let's be honest.

Shawn Sparks

Randolph & Minaya should've both been fired by sundown after the last game of '07. Bringing back the same leadership after a disaster that colossal was asinine.

Ed Yano
Ed Yano

How does Willie have anything to do with this fron office? If you remember he was fired because he was feuding with Omar's right hand man-Tony Bernazard and Manuel sabotaged him to get the job.

nncyel

@Victor TrigueroI think the players under Randolph were just a tad better than Collins' players. Ok, a little more than a tad better. Ok, way, way better. How can you possibly compare?

Why is it that everything, and I mean everything that the FO & ownership does with this team cast in such a negative light by you, eric88, 72tilltc, and a bunch of others? That to me is a much more interesting question. The etiology of snarkiness at SNY Mets.blog. Perhaps a Masters thesis for someone.

eric88
eric88

@Victor Triguero  How about this, they resigned the hitting coach on a team where two starters had to go back to the Minors and where 2/3rd's of their players hit around.200. Willie had better players.

Richard Alicea
Richard Alicea

Thinking the same thing...what in the world is EY JR doing on second with Flores available to play that position?  This manager is pathetic...!

Doubleday

Keith Hernandez was not a power hitter, and he filled the first base position just fine.

BringBackDaveTelghe
BringBackDaveTelghe

@drmetfan That is terrible - It's one of the worst defensive and offensive combinations you can have with the guys we have.

Steven Glansberg
Steven Glansberg

@drmetfan  I would do:

EYJ 2B L
Flores SS R
Murhpy 1B L
Wright 3B R
Grandy RF L

C Young LF R

D'Arnaud C R

Lagares CF R

Main reason I'd do it like this is cause of having 4 right handed batters at the bottom on the lineup and splitting the lefties so a specialist can't come in for EY/Murph

eric88
eric88

@drmetfan  Yes, but we know it won't happen. Unfortunately, your not the Manager.

nymess
nymess

@drmetfan  offensively, I like it, and kind of think it's the best this team can do without bringing someone else in right now. defensively, outside of Wright, that infield is frightening...and that's why it won't stick as an everyday thing.

Ed Yano
Ed Yano

Yes the same hitting coach who coached a batting champ.

mike23

@doubleday  he was also a very good defensive first baseman which made up for his lack of power.

Richard Alicea
Richard Alicea

I agree...Murphy can provide the run production required of a first baseman irregardless of home runs.  Give me 10 Hrs and 80-90 RBIs from First and everyone is happy.

Tony I like that line up, but COLLINS is unable to recognize it...stupdity drives this train!
