He spent some time in their minor-league system last summer, so it makes sense that he’d re-sign.
The Mets also still need a fourth outfielder, who can play multiple positions, be counted on to start from time time, who is athletic, quick, but also has a little pop.
From what I can gather, there are a lot of teams interested in free-agent OF Fred Lewis, including the Mets, but he’s holding on in hopes of finding a starting gig, or at least a place where there is the potential to start. The Mets are not that team. That said, if no such option exists for him, I think he’d be wise to sign in Queens, since he’d be backing up Carlos Beltran and Pagan, two players who have struggled to stay healthy over the last few years.
Frankly, he’s better bat off the bench than he is an outfielder. But, he’s good-enough in the field, and he can play all three position. Basically, he’s not great, but can do everything well, and would be a good addition to any bench.
