Edgardo Alfonzo to serve as minor league instructor

Edgardo Alfonzo is expected to serve as a minor-league roving instructor with the Mets in 2014, a source said (ESPN NY, Feb. 4).

Alfonzo, who lives in Queens, served the organization last season as an “ambassador,” which included coaching the World Team in the All-Star Futures Game.

The interesting thing was that in 1994 all we Mets fans heard about was Rey Ordonez. There was very little said about Alfonso. You had to read the Sporting News or Baseball America to learn that there was a possible second gem of an infield prospect in the system.  I remember him hitting a clutch homer off John Rocker on Labor Day in 1998 to win the game.  Clutch player, great guy.

Fonzi can teach them patience at the plate and how to be a team player. One of the best. Can't wait for his eventual induction into the Mets Hall of Fame.

Alfonzo is my favorite ballplayer of all time..  Great move by the Mets.

I remember watching him in A ball in St Lucie.  You knew he was going to be a good one. He made the switch to second base seamlessly.  An all time Mets great.

Oh, I don't remember the full page ad thanking Mets fans when he left...but I do remember he bought ads on top of taxi cabs thanking the fans. What a super player.  Great to have him back in the organization.

Honestly, I don't think any true Met fan that knows history can say anything bad about Fonzi. All previous mentions were spot on.  His class went beyond the field and as Mystere24 said, he took a full page ad thanking the fans for their support over the years.  He is a unique player and person in world where many get lost in their own persona and hype.  And he continues to represent the team in a positive manner at several Met functions, including retirements, speaking engagements and the Mets Veterans association.  Good to have him back.  Hopefully his knowledge is imparted on the young players and he will someday earn a spot on the major league roster with the team he grew up in and to this day still loves.

I went to this thread to post how much mets fans love Fonzie but looks like I was a little late as everyone else seems to feel the same way. Not only was he a great player and a great guy but he also genuinely loved playing for the Mets. He was devastated when the Mets did not re-sign him and even now he chooses to live in Queens. How great is that?

It's absurd that Fonzie didn't get listed on the Hall of Fame ballots. He's obviously not a HOFer and he might not even have gotten one vote but he deserved to at least get as much of a mention and a career writeup as Ray Durham or Richie Sexson got.

Great news!  Terry will be announcing today that Alfonzo is in the mix to be part of the platoon at first.

Are there any Mets fans that don't love this guy?

Fonzie was not only the all-time Mers second baseman but he was a homegrown talent, versatile fielder, clutch hitter, and class act. He took out a full page ad in the local newspapers when the left the Mets thanking the fans for their support. He's one of the few players who played for the Mets who had his best years with us rather than with another team, and he was part of that great fielding infield in 1999 that included Olerud, Ordonez, and Ventura that landed on the cover of Sports Illustrated. Our young players today can learn a lot from him and he is definitely an asset to the organization.

Can he still play?  He'd be an upgrade at short for us.

@mingo  Fonzie is one of the most underrated Mets of all time. This guy was absolutely awesome and super clutch. Daniel Murphy should be shadowing him for the entire spring training/pre-season. Excellent defender, hit for average, clutch, drove in runs and had some pop and was ultra classy.
