Lucas Duda, Ike Davis

Duda will see time in the OF, Collins impressed with Ike

The majority of Lucas Duda‘s time in the field this spring will be at first base, but he may also get some time in the outfield, Terry Collins said Friday in St. Lucie.

Collins and Sandy Alderson have repeatedly said Duda and Ike Davis will compete for the team’s staring first base job.

In the end, “If Lucas and Ike hit the way we know they can, we’ll figure out a way to get their bats in the lineup,” Collins said.

According to multiple reports, if Duda wins the starting job, Davis will either be demoted or traded. In the event Davis wins the job, Duda could be demoted, but may also stay on the big-league bench as a left-handed power bat and extra outfielder.

Davis arrived earlier this week to the team’s voluntary workouts in St. Lucie. Position player are not required to report until later next week.

“I’ve been very impressed by Ike,” Collins said. “His bat is coming through the zone better. He really looks better.”

Davis is approaching camp like he’s ‘fighting for his life,’ Collins said, in regards to what he’s seen from Davis so far in camp.

Duda is just a horrendous fielder. The only position he is suited for is lefty DH. Besides, if you are playing EJ, Chris Young, Grandy and Lagares, you already have too many OFs. Now you're going to add another who can't even play the position? I don't think so.

If Duda or Ike is red hot durning the spring one of them will be gone.. either the hot guy in a trade if the price is right if not then the odd man out will be either sent down or sent somewhere for any price they can get, hoping to fine for some power off the bench.

When will sandy and Collins realize that duda just isn't that good and there's no reason to find him a spot in the lineup

What stinks is we had Duda playing 1st base over Ike, then we have him playing outfield in this offseason. Yet none of those position he plays very well. Mets defense stinks the last several yrs because we feel like we can fill in position with any player. Instead of getting a 2nd baseman, we fill the role with an outfielder. Who needs a 1st baseman when you have a catchers and outfielders. Just convert one of them. We have young pitching so who cares about defense.

Which is worse Duda in the OF or Collins as manager?  Or Alderson, who not only couldn't straighten his roster out, but paraded Ike out there as out the door?  I don't blame Duda or Ike for this situation, but Ike - c'mon - "forgot" the meeting?  Either he is fibbing or incompetent.  Not going to make a big deal of this, but he was dissed, so I guess this is his payback, but even more pointing out the true incompetence of Alderson and Collins and whoever in management or ownership leaked out all the crap that should have stayed inhouse.

Ike forgets a meeting and Terry is impressed.

Oh Doo Doo.....No Duda in the OF.  Terry, I know you are desperate but  putting Duda in the OF doesn't help the team one bit.

Gosh, stop worrying about Duda in the OF people.  In a best case situation it is as an occassional fill in. It is not like he is starting regularly.

There was a story in the Post newspaper. Saying that Collins had set up a meeting with Ike. And Ike never showed up. Ike comments was that Collins had told him early in the morning and that 6 hours had pass since Collins told him so he forgot.

This does not show me that he wants the 1B job that much. And it also shows that he should not get it. That was a bad bad move by Ike.

If all of a sudden they both are hitting well and playing solid defense that is only a plus for the mets, lets hope it happens. Haven't been consistent as of yet but if it were to happen again i'd be excited about it as it would either help the mets or it would up their trade value so I for one will be rooting for both to have excellent springs along with the rest of the mets. As for ownership, they still need to sell if they think 85 mil is ok.

Does anyone else get the feeling that Duda is just a slow-witted sloth who smokes too much Southern California weed? Does anyone think that if the Mets or Astros didn't exist that he'd ever see the inside of a ML stadium without shelling out his own dollars?

Can anybody in the organization judge talent?..How they could think that Duda can play the outfield is beyond me.What is their infatuation with the guy?..Tell me something he does well? I have seen him play for 4 years..he just doesn't have the talent to be a full time major league player, case closed.I mean they are not paying him big money?..whatever

Why???? What can we possibly learn by having Lucas Duda play the outfield? This guy is a lumbering oaf who should be at AAA or released! We needed to plunk some bucks down for Abreu and cut our losses with Duda and Ike. Why is this team so obsessed with getting this guy playing time???Every blog thread concerns Duda or Ike......Jesus , this is getting old!!!!!

Duda in the OF is embarrassing. What positive yields are they possibly imagining here?

Duda and Ike are equally bad. I have always liked Ike but he's made it difficult lately. His ceiling is extremely higher then Duda's. People who want Ike gone and Duda every day make my head hurt. If you have statistical evidence to back your argument up, then ok. But people's whose only argument is that  he is a "bum" make me want to bang my head against a wall. That being said, I hope that Ike's new work ethic will help him suceed this year. But his leash is very short, he's not getting till June to "figure it out"

Noooooooooooooooooooo!!!  Duda in the outfield?  Will this team ever learn?

Street traffic will stop and crickets will shut-up, the first spring game Ike plays. All eyes, and I mean ALL eyes will be on him.

Terry has won me over. He does not commit to anyone playing any position, after his press conference I was very impressed with him saying ( we are going to take the best players ) they may not be the players we want but I like the fact he wants the players who will give us the best chance of competing and winning!

This roster is so flawed. Too many guys without positions and AAAA type players. This team makes my head hurt

Duda will have more than enough time in the outfield as he's chasing after balls that me missed while playing 1st. No need to give him any more time than that....wake up Collins.

Playing Duda in the OF serves no purpose - we already know he can't do it. If he beats Ike out at 1B he needs to field that position. They play split squad games - let them both play 1B - that's where their value is. Hopefully they both do well and another team takes interest in one because there's no way we need both and I don't believe they're paying either one of them to be in AAA.

mets2014

yeah duda would really have to stink it up to be in AAA...there is a scenario where he and ike both look good then duda could fill a much needed role of LH power bat off bench...right now they have no one for that spot

TC needs his head examined like 4 times if he thinks EY and Duda are everyday players and a 5th time if he thinks Dude plays in the OF

Victor Triguero

@helloboy  no..he should not be an occasional fill in either. They have enough guys on this team that can play outfield. It is just the Mets trying to find a way to keep this guy up here.

People are skeptical of us signing Cruz (which we are not) because of his below average defense, but Duda is going to get some looks? Either he gets the 1B job or he is demoted or traded. Enough of wishing on a star with these guys...they have been around long enough to get a read on what there potential is.

@Mont5  But Collins is impressed with him lol

It is things like this that continue to label this team a joke

helloboy

@Keith Allen-Verdi  they do not plan on him being a full time major league OF.  The Mets agree with you.  We are talking about a 5th OF situation. IE a dominant righty is pitching and they want all lefties in the lineup so they need him in the OF.

People are making a big deal of this.  He is already behind at least 4 players there.

owlnut

@yankeehater  Duda is immobile at first and is a terrible outfielder. Why are the Mets wasting their time with him. A bench player as a lefty pinch hitter? Are you on drugs?

hankincolo
hankincolo

@Thomas McKeever He has to play the hand that's been given to him. He also can't afford to ridicule his players, what good would that serve?

Thomas McKeever
Thomas McKeever

@hankincolo @Thomas McKeeveri get that, but at the same time, your OF should be C.young, Lagares, Granderson.  I can see a chance for EY, but as a 4th OFer. He's not a starter.  You can't take out Lagares' glove.  I think he will hit much better this year.  I actually like our outfield now.  Its very good defensively and good potential for offense.  Duda's role should be a lefty bat off the bench

hankincolo
hankincolo

@Thomas McKeever @hankincolo At this point, unless Ike bombs in April, Duda's best position is in Vegas. He's a fall back guy at 1stbase for TC. But yes, at least right now, Terry might have some very good options for the outfield and that's without Duda.
