Duda and Campbell in tonight’s starting lineup

Lucas Duda will bat clean-up and start at first base Tuesday night against Nationals left-handed starting pitcher Gio Gonzalez (Mets on Twitter, Aug 5).

Eric Campbell will start in left field, with Curtis Granderson getting the day off.

Matthew Cerrone, Lead Writer

July 31: I don’t think Duda is ever going to hit great against lefties. But, that’s OK. It is what it is. He needs to be in there regardless of who is pitching, though. It’s time. If he’s this team’s every-day first baseman, then he’s this team’s every-day first baseman>> Read more.

Aug. 4: I don’t understand why the Mets refuse to just play Campbell in left field every day. Sure, he may make Daniel Murphy look like a Gold Glove left fielder, but they need his bat right now – and, who knows, maybe he’ll hit, feel comfortable and field better because of the boost in confidence. There is only one way to find out >> Read more.

SO far he looks a lot better than Murphy out there so I'm not sure what that comment was based on. I'd like to see them call up den Dekker and platoon him with Campbell. Chris Young has no future with the team so either send him to the bench or say your goodbyes.

I was trying to keep a stiff upper lip and give Collins the benefit of the doubt but this lineup considering where we are in the standings and who we are playing is proof this guy is not a major league manager. They have to be kidding with this continued playing of C Young.

Campbell should be playing in LF over Chris Young anyday.  If they need a defensive substitution late in a game they can bring in Kirk who is still a better offensive player than Young.  Too me Kirk can hit as long as he isn't over exposed so playing Campbell primarily and having Kirk come in for his defense or the occasional spot start would work better than CY everyday.

Why is Tejada in there?

Why is Chris Young still on the team?

"Sure, he may make Daniel Murphy look like a Gold Glove left fielder," Trying too hard to be witty. First, Murphy wasn't bad in left field as a September call up with over eleven starts in the outfield. It was when he was handed the reins as the starting LF the beginning of the following season where he started to experience the rookie jitters and made all types follies in LF. Second, Campbell's defense in the OF hasn't at all been bad. Yes, it was a small sample size but not enough to label him a liability.

Duda really should be starting against lefties from this point on. He's got confidence now, let's see what his real limitations are, and plan for 2015 accordingly.

Campbell in LF against a lefty, that's fine. Again, let's see what we have.

But benching Flores for Ruben Tejada makes smoke want to come out of my head. If Tejada were hitting .280 with his usual walks and no power, I could understand. If he were playing Gold Glove defense, I could understand. But neither of those things are true; he's hitting below .230, slugging below .300 and playing decent defense. Are the Mets so afraid that if they start Flores every day that he's going to be the next Andrew Brown, that they aren't willing to take the chance to flush away his trade value? I don't get it.

Tell me Flores is starting at SS today as well. If not FIRE TERRY on the spot (I wish), Tejada is not going to be the starting SS in 2015 (god I hope that is the case) so why keep starting him now instead of finding out if FLores can play, there is no rational reason not to start FLores at SS from this point on....Stubborn Terry!

Mexpert

@Chad Michael Terry doesnt know how to make a defensive substitution. He had Duda in LF Turner at first and Hairston in center blowing late inning leads with defensive guys on the bench.

Tejada refuses to accept his limitations. He continues to swing for the fences and pop out too much. If he won't play with the best interests of the team in mind then he shouldn't be playing regardless of what Collins thinks.

@sjm25 Yeah like they dont think anyone on the roster is an improvement over CY? They do stupid things. Like you say stupid things . Or maybe they are just bad at evaluating players like you and think Tejada is superior.

@Mau Agudelo good questions, blame Terry/Sandy... they obviously aren't willing to give others an opportunity instead they continue to put out the same/mediocre players... so dumb!

@borsh13 Maybe because Campbell never once played SS in his entire career, other than this year playing two games. At least Flores came up as a SS

@BronsonSNY - Exactly right on all points there. Murphy was fine that first half season. He was terrible the season after that but from what I remember it sure seemed like jitters. He judge the ball correctly, get there but then drop it. That says nerves to me.

If you want to reach back for a terrible LFer then go to Todd Hundley. He was a very good catcher but THE worst out fielder I've ever seen.

mike23
mike23

@sjm25 Campbell is not the answer in the outfield or anywhere else, he will continue to be exposed much like Josh Satin was previously.. he is a bench guy at best and maybe with time he will show he isn't that either. Mets continue to bring up these type of players, would be nice to see mets start bringing up legit talent that can develop and be a very good starter but they continue to bring up these types.... they better go all out for the cuban free agent outfielder this time around.

mike23

@herblehman yeah the way Terry etc.. are not using flores makes no sense, to allow a player like Tejada to block a top prospect is just mind boggling. I can't stand Terry's stubborn nature, Every time I see Tejada in the lineup I get the dry heaves....so annoying.

Sadly, Tejada is starting again tonight... Flores is on the bench.

Pat Brady
Pat Brady

@mike23 @sjm25 - What are you basing this on though? Not saying you're wrong but the guy has played well. In my opinion you saw it coming with Satin. He was a guy that could really play one position and had a terrible swing. Campbell is a better athlete, has more power and a better swing.

@sjm25 They are wrong read the scouting reports on Cal Ripken.

mike23
mike23

@sjm25 @herblehman I don't care, Flores has played short stop alot in the minors, he is currently being blocked by Tejada, Tejada should not be blocking anyone, mets aren't going to make the playoffs this year (most likely) so why not give flores a real shot to show what he can/can't do....I don't care what some scouts say, Tejada should not be blocking anyone from getting their chance, that is my issue.

mike23
mike23

@sjm25 @mike23 obviously you listen to scouts only etc.. but from what i've seen of flores he can handle the position and he should not be blocked by Tejada, a light hitting, decent at best ss, we should be seeing what Flores can/can't do, no reason not to give it a try, no reason he should be blocked by Tejada who we already know what he can/can't do, play Flores and lets see.

mike23
mike23

@ron3d2y @mike23  so dumb! Can't believe they are wasting Flores on the bench again in favor of Tejada, just insane, can't stand Terry and his decision making or lack there of. Sandy Too! Both should be gone after this season if the mets had legit owners (wish they'd go away too)>

mike23
mike23

@sjm25 @mike23 I understand us as mets fans etc.. thinking negatively in terms of signings because most of the time they do back fire but mets need to take a shot and hope he is the next great cuban player, if the price is too crazy than I can understand passing but mets have to give it a legit shot based on the not so great free agent outfielders available and not wanting to trade their top prospects... you get this guy and hope he succeeds and still have your young talent to focus on fixing SS etc...

herblehman
herblehman

Flores is not a top prospect, I agree, but Tejada is a .225 hitter, and you simply cannot bury young players like this. If nothing else, if they really do think Tejada is the shortstop for 2015 and beyond, they're hurting Flores' trade value by having him up here playing sporadically. He could keep hitting .300+ with power in Vegas and fool someone into THINKING he's a top prospect.

ron3d2y
ron3d2y

@mike23

He got to start 2 games in a row, got hits, drove in runs, and played great defense. So of course Terry sits him for Tejada. I've given up on trying to understand or make sense of Terry. We go through this with any young player who's come up under Terry, they sit on the bench and are given zero chances. Tejada has done nothing to deserve the starts and Terry even keeps saying he's playing well when he isn't. You can't make this stuff up.

Tarheel11
Tarheel11

@borsh13 Agreed. Best athletes go to SS or CF. Lagares started as a SS. Point is Campbell was NEVER a SS for a reason.

And can we get the facts straight here. Flores wasn't even signed 8 years ago. His first pro season was 2008. And he wasn't moved from SS at 16, it wasn't until 2011 at age 19.

I'm not a Flores supporter but I am getting tired of people trashing the kid for no good reason. Tejada at least deserves it! That was a joke (kind of).

@sjm25 @mike23 @herblehman

I don't trust this organizations decision making, they have made errors in the past and present and will in the future... I go by what I saw and he looked decent at ss, enough to get his bat in the lineup over tejada's.....and if for whatever reason he does struggle etc.. than mets can obtain a new ss next year via trade/free agency, so what is the harm in trying flores.

Mexpert
Mexpert

@sjm25 The mets moved him so you take stock in that? But those same decision makers put Grandy in RF and Ankiel in Center thought Lagares couldn't play and signed Young . Marcum,Lyons, Batista I rest my case i trust my eyes you trust Sandy. You will lose on that horse.

@sjm25 @mike23 @herblehman

He is on the mets list of their top prospects is the point, did I say he was their most elite prospect etc... no, I said he was a met top prospect which they still consider him, not his fault Terry and the mets are holding him back from getting a legit opportunity all for the great tejada to continue to play

...we agree to disagree I guess, I still think Flores is the guy to play at SS if nothing else than to find out if he can improve upon his defense and improve mets offense.

fhc1224
fhc1224

@sjm25 @herblehman tejeda is not a legit ss.  he is at best, an adequate back up.  flores has been a top 10 prospect in the mets minors for the past 6 years including the past 3 when we had all those players you listed.  This is the first yrae any of them passed him on the prospect list and that was just Thor & d'Arnaud.  He has also been ranked in baseball america top 100  3 times.  he may never be a great defensive ss but that is not what you are trying to find out here.  You want to see how is bat works in the bigs and to see if maybe he can be a Peralta type ss, make the routine plays you have to make and provide enough offense to cover the ones you dont.  He has good hands, a strong arm, can turn the dp, he just has limited range to his left.  Though his range may be limited, it is still not much less then Tejad'a's.  In a series where the Mets almost get no hit twice, total 17 hits in the 4 games, Flores goes 1 for 3 in each start, 2-6 total with 2 doubles & 2 rbi's.  Tejeda takes the collar in all 3 games he plays.  You keep telling people to read Baseball for Dummies, I suggest you take your own advice and read it, learn some facts before you start spouting off on here moron.

Mexpert

@sjm25 I think you should be punished and watch Tejada play every day for another team.

Tarheel11

@borsh13 On that we agree. I have always said I don't think Flores is the answer. My point is neither is Tejada. I'm not pushing for Flores, I just want Tejada pushed out the door!

mike23
mike23

@sjm25 @mike23 @herblehman

I didn't say I didn't trust them for one player, I don't trust them for a variety of reasons, I don't like how they handle their young players, I think they both over rate and under rate their talent, I think they give older/less talented players more of a chance to play than an up and coming player etc.... that is where my trust comes into question, not just for one player.

@sjm25 Snd with the 5 era Torres hahahahahhaha Rice Francisco . You are the first guy to praise his bullpen. Broght them up for super 2 idiot. Harvey should have made the team out of spring and taught him the killer slider. All Omar guys!!!

@sjm25 @Mexpert I see a solid hitter and when compared with Duda and Tejada who played at LV last year he is better. As far as fielding he looks great Tejada is a panic.

mike23

@sjm25 its baseball america, that is a pretty accurate source, where else would you like to get a list of mets prospects?

Pat Brady
Pat Brady

@sjm25 @Mexpert - Flores was in the Mets top 10 list coming into this season I think according to most scouts. Does that put him in the top 100? No but it doesn't mean he's not a legit prospect either, it doesn't mean he doesn't have value.

I have to think his stock is way down at this point though based on his performance in the majors. I don't think he's been given a real chance but I'm not sure where you can play him either.

@sjm25 yes Tejada and Duda spent no time in LV you are a senile old man.

@borsh13 I think Tejada would make a good back up infielder. But that's it. Having said that I want nothing to do with Tejada on the Met's next year making 2+M as a backup infielder! Goodbye Tejada

well terry isn't playing him anyway so our argument will stay in limbo because Flores isn't getting his shot anyway... so lets just move on.
