Matt Kemp flies out

Dodgers open to dealing Kemp, not Joc Pederson

The Dodgers are unwilling to trade top OF prospect Joc Pederson, even in a deal for Rays LHP David Price (Jayson Stark, July 24).

Naturally, Pederson, 22, is a player some Mets fans point to as an ideal trade target in an effort to improve Sandy Alderson‘s offense.

Instead, the Dodgers may be shopping OF Matt Kemp, who is due $118 million through 2019 (Gordon Edes, July 27).

So far, five teams, including the Mariners, have shown interest in acquiring Kemp (Jon Heyman, July 26).

There had been rumors this past weekend pointing to a possible Red Sox-Dodgers deal involving Kemp and Jon Lester, but subsequent reports shot it down (MLB Trade Rumors, July 27).

Some of you people scare me. Kemp th 8th or 9th best OF in the org. WHAT?!?! His stats are better than any mets OF this season except for HR and some suspect defense.

.277/.343/.432 is nothing to piss on and a change of scenery will most likely help.

Its honestly crazy that some of you guys would rather have eric young, or andrew brown over matt kemp... always complain mets never make any moves. but when its possible we get a MVP caliber player just 2-3 years ago, suddenly hes no better than AAA players.

UNBELIEVABLE

Kemp is toast. This once-promising guy just looks awful out there.

Joc Pederson not these other players being named should be the target, I know the dogers are saying he is not available as they should but its talk & just talk. The right offer gets it done, they have a billion dollar log jam at outfield they need to back up the arrival of their outfield prospect. Joc Pederson is ready now while Nimmo is maybe 2 yrs out. This off season Plawecki,Nimmo & Montero for Pederson & A ball prospect will be a strong offer & soon enough our outfield could be a young great one with Lagares, Pederson & Conforto shining in it.

sandy--"unlikely to make a trade"....what a joke, can we trade for a new gm...the time is now sandy

Dear Dodgers....you contracted Kemp and he is not delivering the goods. Maybe the Mets will take him if you assume his salary.

MLB trade rumors: Rockies won't trade Troy Tulowitzki without receiving 'offer of the century'

Great news. I hope when the Mets brain trust considers trading for him they know you have to ransack your farm for his services. Let's see if they'd do that.

BTW how long before Michael Conforto is moved to Savannah?

No on Kemp. I'd rather keep Lagares in CF. Find someone for SS and LF and now we're talking. I know Kemp would probably play LF here (and honestly, Grandy should be playing LF with a better outfielder in RF), but he's not worth what he's being paid anymore. He's been one of the worst outfielders in the league this season.

Kemp is not a difference maker.  He's a little better than what we got in the outfield presently, but not by much if he is better that is.  We need a better bat or don't trade.  Don't waste out talented pitchers on players like Kemp

@Owen Engeldrum We aren't trading for past performance, we are trading for future performance.

Kemp in 2011 - 324/ .399/.586 (.986 )

Kemp in 2013&2014 combined - 274/.336/.416 (.752)

He went from an 8.2 WAR player to a -1.0 (yes, that's negative).

Some "suspect defense" is the key.  He can't play in the field anymore and CitiField is a pretty big ballpark.

I'd rather have Eric Young AND HIS CONTRACT instead of Matt Kemp and HIS contract (or half of it, or a third of it).

If EY craters or if Nimmo comes up next year and Conforto the year after, we cut EY.  Can the Mets cut Kemp with $40m left on his contract (if the Dodgers pay the other two thirds of his deal)?  Nope.  It'd never happen.  Hell, we can't even get Sandy to cut CHRIS FRIGGIN YOUNG and his $7.25m contract (but thanks for the doubles lately, Chris).

@BronsonSNY says who? You? Chances are every players market is heading up. That's what q happens when the trade deadline approaches

i dont hate it...i'd rather a guy like cargo with more power...markakis is literally the exact hitter murphy is...so i like it, i think colon would get it done, if the o's have someone to take markakis' spot...i just dont love the power..this team has 0 power & its frustrating...your team leader shouldnt have 20-25 hr every year

@rico um what are we supposed to do with 3 catchers? they are not like outfielders where we need 3 of them on the field at the same time

Karl Leopold
Karl Leopold

@rico he already was - Steve Kemp 1983 & 1984 - maybe they kept the jersey

zoddie
zoddie

@ponzies86  He's better than Chris Young, but not better than Kirk Nieuwenhuis.  He's probably as good as Eric Young.  He also has a contract through 2019.

@BronsonSNY Not worth it at all, Tulo is injury prone and his numbers outside Coors Field is bad

@Karl Leopold  Whenever he gets promoted, he's probably starting next season in St. Lucie.

tk2120

@Starz31 i dont think this is even realistic..just people talking...he doesn't fit with the mets..makes too much money, they dont need a cf... the only way sandy does this is if LA picks up like 100 million on the contract (seriously, 100 million), and kemp is fine not playing center...if they made a move with any valuable prospect and/or putting him in center, thats awful & i dont think sandy would even entertain it

p8erbaghad
p8erbaghad

@robby Little better than sideshow CY/EYJ combo?  You have to consider what he's replacing.  With that said, I definitely agree that this should be strictly a salary dump if we're to acquire him, WITH the Dodgers paying a good portion of the $107mil.

Owen Engeldrum
Owen Engeldrum

@zoddie Im not saying we should trade for him (mainly because of his contract), im just saying he's a better player (hitter) than what we've got right now. I dont see EY ever batting above .230 and hes a slap hitter. CY is just below average in general. and brown/den dekker/ niewenhuis all looked over matched at ML level in their time here

@Mets0987 Someone that can be had for the right price. I'm sure there are players that can do better than Tejada, and fill in in LF. That's all team needs--competent bats at those positions.

@Karl Leopold makakis is an outfielder, and a good one. Not a star but solid.

zoddie
zoddie

@p8erbaghad @robby  Robby is right.  At BEST Kemp is only a slight upgrade over those two Youngs (better than Chris, worse than Eric) and is as good as Kirk.  He's terrible in the field.

zoddie
zoddie

@Owen Engeldrum @zoddie  I agree that EY will never be more than a .230-.240 hitter, but he contributes in other ways that Kemp can't.  EY is an average defender, while Kemp is an awful defender (and getting worse).  EY is an elite baserunner, while Kemp is bad on the basepaths now.

Don't forget Kirk has hit .246/.328/.509 this season.  Abreu or Chris Young should be cut to make room for him.

In short, Kemp is a better hitter than all of them, probably, but not a better player.  And if it is that close that we're pulling out advanced stats to compare these guys, is this a player we want for the next five years?

nym68
nym68

@BronsonSNY @nym68 there ya go! I stand corrected. Usually it's a good idea to state where your info comes from so it doesn't sound as if you're making it up....which I believe we can both agree happens at least half the time on here

@rico @Karl Leopold Those are the type of trades that need to be made but I doubt the O's do it whilst in a pennant chase.

Karl Leopold
Karl Leopold

@rico @Karl Leopold your right - too much of a web-in-are let em turn that off and concentrate on the more important task at hand

rico

@p8erbaghad @rico @Karl Leopold He's 28, had an injuries last year. Having a good comeback year and like I said, he's 28 and has averaged 280+ over his career.  The Os want a big pitcher but don't want to pay….hence my suggestion of Colon for Makakis, who is available

zoddie
zoddie

@p8erbaghad @zoddie @robby  It is very acceptable for a LF.  Unfortunately, Kemp can't actually play the outfield anymore.  He also isn't good on the bases anymore.  Kemp is a DH or first baseman at this point in his career, sadly.  The Mets don't have a DH and have a 1b that hits better than Kemp does.

Duda hit well for an outfielder, too.  Didn't make him good for the Mets when he was there.

rico
rico

@p8erbaghad @rico @Karl Leopold it;s a logical and doable trade, no matter if he's 28 or 30.  heck half the dominican players shave 10 years off their age.

Sorry I am not giving you some Tulo variation but this one actually makes sense for the MEts and the O's

p8erbaghad
p8erbaghad

@rico @p8erbaghad @Karl Leopold In person? No.  I used to have him on my fantasy team back in the days so I know what he was capable of.  Of course, he's due for free agency at the end of the team so he'll be strictly a rental for a non-playoff team if we were to pull the trigger.
