I always thought the Mets matched up best for a trade with the Angels and Rays. However, according to people familiar with the situation, this may no longer be the case…
The Angels are said to be turning their attention to the free-agent starting pitching market, because they’ve been so underwhelmed by trade offers for 1B-OF Mark Trumbo and 2B Howie Kendrick. According to friends in baseball, the Rockies, Rays, Mets and a handful of other teams all expressed interest in Trumbo and/or Kendrick, but the Angels will only consider a deal if it nets them a middle-of-the-rotation pitcher with big-league experience, which still reads to me like Jon Niese.
Similarly, I’ve had more than one league contact tell me the Mets and Rays could pull off something big, but only if a third team with a big hitting prospect gets involved. He says the Rays, Reds, Rangers and Mariners, as well as the Angels, all fill the void.
