Dillon Gee stops the losing streak

Mets RHP Dillon Gee has not allowed a run in 16 straight innings.

He tossed six scoreless innings to help the Mets from being swept Sunday at Coors Field.

“I think I’ve had better stuff than I had today,” Gee said after the game. “It was just one of those outings where I was just able to get them to hit the ball at people and get the outs when we really needed to.”

Gee gave up back-to-back singles to begin the seventh inning, but Carlos Torres and Scott Rice were able to get out of the inning without letting up a run.

“We’ve been kind of hanging around that 100-pitch mark and even less sometimes,” Collins said about Gee, who left the game having thrown 113 pitches. “I wanted him to get up there so we get into the middle of summer it’s a little easier to throw the 90-100 pitches.”

Gee is 3-1 with a 2.51 ERA this season. He has the fourth-best ERA since May 30, 2013, among pitchers with at least 175 innings (Bergen Record, May 5) >> Click to Tweet.

He just keeps rolling, it’s impressive. He says he was lucky, and I guess that’s true. The Rockies were putting the ball in a play a lot and Gee’s defense picked up everything. However, the Rockies were frequently off balance, swinging at bad pitches and making awkward contact, none of which was an accident. In the last year, Dillon has done an incredible job keeping the opposition on its heels. At this point, a year in, I hope people no longer have doubts about his passion, brain and ability.

Did people have doubts about his brain? I wasn't aware that was an issue.

Love Gee - no fanfare, no hype, no media frenzy, he just goes out there and does the job time and time again.  Either lock him up to a long-term agreement (which leaves some of the prospects available for a trade), or deal him now, before Warthen blows out his elbow.

The Mets HAVE to be thinking extension with Gee. He is 27, lock him up for the next 4 or 5 years

Gee and Niese are the Mets 1,2 punch. Wheeler 3, Colon 4 and Mejia 5.

Every team is above .500 and less than 2 games separate all of them!  It will not be easy in Miami this week.  They have the best home record in the majors at this point and just owned the Dodgers down there.  Let's do what we can to get back to Citi above .500 and get some of these L's back.

NL East? More like the NL Beast.

Ler's leave Murph alone...he's been a bright spot this season.  If Juan and CY continue to hit this will ease the pain in the outfield until Granderson begins to hit with more regularity.  I see the team playing well throughout the year; the pitching is the reason for my optimism.

Ace of the staff! Good going Gee!

What is wrong with Murphy? He's running the bases with his head up his rear. He is reverting to the guy he used to be on the base paths.

Does anyone realize that 3/5 of the current rotation was signed on Omar Minaya's watch? Gee, Neise, Mejiia.  When Harvey comes back that is 4/5 of the rotation. He also signed Lagares. Pity his drafts were so poor (Pelfrey, Kunz).

They should just start paying him tripple to be the pitching coach.

He's a good trade piece for a nice bat or SS...White Sox looking to move Alexis Ramirez; he would be an upgrade.

That time when there was nearly a Metsblog riot over Gee being the Opening Day starter

Would not trade Gee. We have enough chips in the system to bring back a bat if Alderson ever gets off his duff!

GEE DA MAN!!! He's truly the ace of this staff thank you GEE ; D

At the trade deadline, Gee should traded as part of a package to get a big bat. We have enough pitching in the pipeline to afford to trade him. He never has had as much value as he does right now. Sell high!!

Gee is tough.  Glad he's a Met.

Ok, that's enough. Let's not drop more than 3 in a row, we now need to win 3 or 4 before we drop another game :}

Gee pitched really, REALLY well again yesterday.  But only went 6 innings again. So it's safe to assume everyone wants him traded for a bat.

Gee pitched like an ace yesterday - may not have had his best stuff, but got us a win when we desperately needed it.  I did not want this team to go into Miami (14-5 at home) having been swept and back at .500.  Huge win.

I'm thinking the mets can take 2 of 3 here....I'm feeling good...i think they had their slide and hopefully back to winning some games

@owlnut I think he was just being overly aggressive this series. Teams typically sleep on Murphy, so he takes what is given to him.

@mets1973 Uh...Gee Niese and Harvey all came via the draft...Lagares and Mejia were international signings and arent eligible for the draft. Are you really going to Omar Minaya's regime massive credit? Its about player development as well. Gee was like a 21st round pick or something. That says a lot about the minor league system.

@mets2death  yeah who's screaming "Trade Gee, Trade Niese" now?

@Sam Mack  I'm going Wednesday can't wait. The best part about going to that stadium is the amount of Mets fans that go. I met my middle school teacher's son from when I lived on LI in Miami. Such a small world... LGM

@tullydew One commodity that there is NEVER enough of is starting pitching, especially young pitchers at reasonable salaries. The only way I would even consider moving Gee (which will almost certainly never happen) is for a Cargo or Bryce Harper.

Yea because Beltran Delgado loduca and Billy Wagner were garbage

How many good things has Alderson done? Bullpen? Jason Bay? Terry Collins?! Dropping the ball on free agents this past offseason. How many guys out there who the Mets could have signed are off to great starts? Seems like a lot by my count. Meanwhile, we get Granderson and Colon.

I'm done being impressed with Sandy Alderson.

Dana Smith

@rico @mets2deathToo many people. They have value in that they give our rotation unique looks. Look at Miami. 5 starters, all Right handed, all throw 94mph with sliders. That formula will not last. You sandwich Gee and Niese between Harvey Wheeler and Syndergaard and we'll be giving the national league fits for years.

Richard Alicea
Richard Alicea

His ceiling is high now...best to move him for an everyday player at a position we are lacking...we have ample pitching in the pipeline...this is a no brainer.   Believe me Gee was dangled this past winter by Sandy and there were few takers, I bet those teams would now make the trade in a heartbeat...there are numerous teams that need good starting pitching; chance for Sandy to get a high return for him...I'd do it in a heartbeat.   Gee doesn't have the stamina to go beyond 7 innings.

dave42
dave42

@Pete Brilvitch in Colorado, I'll take 6 shutout innings any day of the week and twice on Sundays!  I understand Terry's idea to get him up into the 110-120 pitch range, but do that in Miami or Philly, not Denver.

Richard Alicea
Richard Alicea

Thor and Montero will be up this summer...they are in the minors only because of our current log jam at starting pitching...if not one of the two would be on the major league roster.  Respect your opinion but when you have needs in other areas (Relief Pitching, SS and OF) and have salary limitations, you make trades to better the team and fill the holes.

Richard Alicea
Richard Alicea

@Dana Smith Not talking about developing players...Ramirez is a known commodity who would be an upgrade at SS; or we could package him to the Cubs for Starlin Castro as they have a replacement waiting in the wings to take over.  I'd pull the trigger on this in a heartbeat.  The team is not designed to compete for a World Series yet...it's the smart thing to do with our hole at SS.

Dana Smith
Dana Smith

@Richard Alicea No, you trade prospects for bats. You dont trade away proven pitchers to risk and gamble on developing players. With hitters, you can do that, with pitchers, its such a learning process, the experience is more valuable than the raw skill. Look at Mejia's and Gee's starts. If anything, we should extend Gee and trade Montero/Mejia/deGrom for bats. Plus, our only glaring offensive need is SS. Gee definitely has the "stamina", but guys are still building arm strength and stamina in April. Gee is a horse, he battles, he's gritty, and he will be a veteran leader this staff. Trading him is foolish.

Dana Smith
Dana Smith

@stemog @Cesar Cussianovich@Dana Smith@tullydewExactly. I understand wanting a "big Bat", but you trading a proven starter to make way for prospects is something like "rebuilding" and I think we've passed that point. Gee should be extended, if anything, and him and Niese should stay put.

Plus, whos the big bat? The rockies are trading tulo or cargo. The marlins arent trading stanton.

@mets2death @Michael Frias  lol...I was talking about Dickey.  Colon?  I'd drive the moving van.  he's a solid picther, but his entire tenure with the Mets shouldn't last more than 6 months
