Jacob deGrom 14

DeGrom scratched from Tuesday start

Jacob deGrom has a sore right shoulder, he will travel to New York for an exam Monday and will miss his next scheduled start, Tuesday, assistant GM John Ricco told reporters in Philadelphia.

“I’m calm about it,” deGrom said (ESPN, Aug. 10). “I don’t think it’s anything serious. I can probably go out there and pitch with it right now, but I think, just talking to them, at this time of the year, it’s not really worth pushing it.”

DeGrom said he first felt sore the day after his last start, then again Saturday while throwing on flat ground.

Carlos Torres(ESPN, Aug. 10), Noah Syndergaard and Rafeal Montero (Puma, Aug. 10) could all be possible spot starters, depending on how much time deGrom will miss.

According to Ricco, deGrom likely would have needed to skip a start at some point soon anyway, since he is quickly approaching his innings limit for the year, which Sandy Alderson has said will be some place around 180-185 innings.

DeGrom is 6-5 with a 2.87 ERA in 16 starts for the Mets this season.

Would not bring up Thor yet, give Montero the start, if he does really well there will be that much interest in him during the offseason, interest level on Thor is already through the roof

collins was allowing him to throw too many pitches. you should not let a young guy throw well over 100 pitches like collins had him do. the list of pitchers arms that collins has hurt keeps growing

Meija and deGrom?...wow...hopefully its not serious but its hard not to worry about injuries with this team.

If Collins keeps babying these pitchers he won't have any left for the stretch drive.

I'm not to worried about this, I'm sure that they are just being super cautious and rightfully so.  Jacob said he dealt with this last year and pitched through it.

Not sure I'd bring up Thor for one start only to send him back down.  I might wait until September callups and then go to a 6 man rotation or shut deGrom down and slot Thor into his spot.

Thor time. Just give the kid a look see. If Jake has to go on the DL, Matsuzaka can replace him in the rotation, in a few days. Just let Noah have a cup of coffee with the big club, this week.

Thor is not ready, by his own admission and the opinions recently posted by scouts and coaches.  Bring up Montero even if deGroom does not have to go on the dl.  Let him skip at least 1 start, then use a 6 man rotation for the last 42 games giving each 7 starts,  keeping iniing counts under control & easing the potential of Gee or Niese getting reinjured and Colon collapsing from the workload at his age and pysical condition.  Montero is already on the 40 man roster, he seems to have turned the corner in his last few starts and is back to pitching the way he was when everyone was raving about him.  They will probably DFA Caryle but I would just DFA  Eric Young.  With den Dekker and Campbell sharing left field and Cap Kirk in reserve for all 3 spots in the outfield, what purpose does he serve here?  Not pinch hitting as he can't hit.  Either have him come up with a phantom muscle strain to go on the dl until rosters expand Sept 1 or cut him.

Just don't start Torres. It would be like throwing in the towel. They need Niese to step up tomorrow and finish this trip off right. Put Syndergaard or Montero on the mound Tuesday night, give the place a little buzz. Personally I'd like to see NS.

Now with deGrom  hurt they will tell us yes Harvey is back in 2015,, but now with deGrom hurt we have to wait for 2016 to spend and win.

Let me guess. This is Warthen's fault. No, it's TC's fault.

They are plotting to ruin the starting rotation so that Tejada can become a starting pitcher. That will enable them to start Syndergaard at ss, which is their true strategy..

How about cory mazzoni, 24 and a hard thrower. Lets see what he has as a prospect

Going to the game Tuesday. Would've liked to see Degrom but I'm hoping maybe it's going to be Syndergaard's debut

Not sure what is worse....  hearing that DeGrom "will travel to New York" or the fans using nicknames as if this is the 1950's on Belmont Avenue.  You are all grown ***** men.  Can we please stop with the nicknames??  Thor?  Let the NY Post, or his team or his actual buddies call him that.  How about..... Syndergaard?  This all reminds me of when Niewenhuis was coming up a few years back and we had to hear the "Captain Kirk" nonsense for a player that amounted to nothing more than a glorified bat boy.

Play it safe w degrom and call up montero . Torres is a good reliever

@Albert E Lewis You think the Mets are the only one with pitching injuries? Go look across town. Or anywhere in baseball. deGrom will be fine. Shoulders get sore. it happens.

@Doubleday I saw him down in Spring Training (live) he's a big kid and his stuff is nasty, but his fastball also looked very straight and you could see veterans on the other teams timing it.  It might actually be good to have him up to watch and learn from Colon, a guy who can do anything with one pitch.

@lindro88 Sometimes the guys waiting down below play down to the competition, and when you bring them up they rise to the challenge, like Harvey did.

One way to find out

Looks like I forgot these were the Mets. At 6-1 I thought we were in good shape.

@eric88

We have multiple options in minors...Win next year...Mazzoni, Syndergard, Montero, Lefty Steven Matz, and more...

@hankypanky That's exactly the spin I see on the Mets board. Just defend Collins for a minute, and you are an ignorant bohunk. I think they released Chris Young just to put him on waivers and pick him back up as a starting pitcher.

@DMA1968 So by your logic we should have called Tom Seaver, George.  Tug McGraw, Frank.  Buddy Harrelson, Derrel, etc.

Welcome to the age of the internet DMA. Typing Thor a lot easier than Syndergaard, Cap Kirk so much simpler than Neiwenheis. I'm guessing DMA is short for something.

@DMA1968 I feel for you if something as trivial as this annoys you. My suggestion to relieve your pain is to skip the comment section entirely. Also Mr. Webster above is right.

I think in those 2 particular instances using nicknames is just as much about not having to remember the spelling of their more difficult last names and for brevity typing as with Thor

@DarrolRayFanClub @eric88 No one does, but eric88 can't miss a chance to put a negative spin on every single event associated with the Mets.

@steve333 @DMA1968 you might want to add 6 or 7 more syllables and clusters of unpronounceable vowels just to make it more fun to type on your phone :)

How about using his real name? Noah. Easy to spell and it skips the schoolyard nicknames. Besides, it's a helluva nicer name than that dumb label they planted on the kid.

Torres deserves 2 weeks off, he's tired.

Steve Scanlan

@Doubleday I don't think he's the answer with a very questionable elbow. The Mets will have to call up at least one prospect or else pay the price in fan wrath with Torres, Eveland and an injured Mejia, trying to hold down the fort.

@hankypanky try expressing yourself your own way and don't impose your neurosis on the rest of us.  In other words, stop being so darn Cranky- PANKY

Anyways at least they call him something flattering and not "a piece of garbage" that half the METS and their org get.  Back in the day, everybody was a "tomato-can", now (as Oscar would say) "It's Gahbage"

DarrolRayFanClub
DarrolRayFanClub

@hankypanky Was saying Doc that much easier than Dwight? It had less to do with ease in that case and everything to do with his personal preference. Syndergaard loves the nickname, which started when he dressed as Thor for Halloween and tweeted out the photo. "The home planet of Thor is called Asgard, which is like my last name," says Syndergaard.

We're fans of a baseball team, not in a board room with bank executives. It's supposed to be fun, and if he is having fun and likes the name, I'm sure going to call him that and not stop because another fan thinks it's a dumb label created by the media. A fan started it, and Thor thinks it's funny and cool. Not gonna stop calling him that until he says otherwise.
