Bronson Arroyo

Bronson Arroyo has options, but not in a hurry…

The Mets (Cafardo, Dec. 1), Phillies and Angels (Zolecki, Dec. 9) are among close to a dozen teams with interest in Arroyo, who has said he would definitely consider signing with the Mets (Martino, Nov. 1).

The Mets are not very high on Arroyo, a team official once said (Rubin, Dec. 2). However, a few days later, it was reported that the Mets and Twins are aggressively pursuing the free-agent starting pitcher (Cotillo, Dec. 5).

Minnesota’s talks with Arroyo were reportedly gaining momentum (Rosenthal, Dec. 9) after the Twins met with his agents Monday during the Winter Meetings (Wolfson, Dec. 9). The Pirates (Olney, Dec. 9) and Mets (Puma, Dec. 6Cafardo, Dec. 2) were supposedly interested in meeting with Arroyo’s representatives during the Winter Meetings as well.

Arroyo said he has offers on the table, but he is not yet ready to accept a deal (Cafardo, Dec. 9).

He is reportedly looking for a three-year contract (Rubin, Nov. 30).

Can you stop the pointless Arroyo posts?  It has already been established that the Mets are not in on him anymore.  We will wait out the market and search the bargain bin in January.

Instead of endless, meaningless updates on players we won't sign, why not profile some of our young pitching prospects with all the free time you must have in the offseason?

I hope he signs somewhere soon so we can stop getting updates on a guy they are definitely not signing.

eting Plans

By TIM ROHAN

December 9, 2013

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — Fresh from handing out the largest free-agent contract in his tenure as the Mets’ general manager, Sandy Alderson arrived here for baseball’s annual winter meetings, his suite turned into a makeshift conference room.

There was a long table with about a dozen chairs around it, two boards stationed to the side and a screen on the far wall. Here was where the Mets’ brass would convene for the next few days, where they would discuss potential deals and debate adding a shortstop, a starting pitcher or a reliever.

The Mets still have needs, three or four of them, Alderson indicated as he spoke with reporters for more than 20 minutes Sunday without revealing much. Before the meetings had even started, it seemed he was already tempering expectations, but that has been a Mets theme for several years.

Asked how much money Alderson had left to spend, having split about $22.5 million of next year’s payroll between Chris Young and Curtis Granderson, Alderson would not give an exact number, but said simply, “We still have some room.”

He added, “I don’t want to set up expectations one way or another.”

He indicated that payroll could be about $85 million next season, which would allow him to maybe make one other significant move. He also reiterated that Ruben Tejada, his young, enigmatic shortstop, may start opening day.

“Depending how things materialize, we may live with certain weaknesses,” Alderson said. “For example, we could come out of these meetings with Tejada as our regular shortstop. Worse things could happen to us, certainly.”

If that becomes the case, Alderson would be expected to have filled some of the Mets’ other needs. He said he could add a veteran starter to replace Matt Harvey next season, but he also said that two young prospects — presumably Noah Syndergaard and Rafael Montero — could be in the rotation by midseason.

He said he could add a late-inning reliever but also said the bullpen would improve as younger players developed — presumably someone like Vic Black.

Alderson said he could trade either Ike Davis or Lucas Duda but also said a deal may not be made this week despite continuing discussions with other teams.

If Alderson replaces Tejada, it will probably happen via trade rather than free agency. Stephen Drew appears to be the only free-agent shortstop who would provide an obvious upgrade, and he could command a contract worth more than $10 million per year.

“I don’t want this to be viewed as a week in which we try to replace Ruben Tejada,” Alderson said. “If we have to go into the season with Ruben Tejada as our shortstop, we need to make sure we’re happy with that given what else we’ve done with the team. I think that’s very possible.”

Arroyo would be nice but we only need him for 1 year really.  I guess you could sign him for 3 and then trade him next offseason.  Personally, I think Montero is ready for the bigs and would be more then good enough as a fifth starter. We need to concentrate on offensive upgrades.

Well. we can eliminate Arroyo since talks between him and tin are intensifying; although, I highly doubt that he was signing with the Mets per Rosenthal

Daniel Murphy is from Jacksonville. ...I could see him traded to Tampa to play 1b...for what? Escobar the SS?

Or Murphy and Mejia for Escobar and Hellickson?

Dark horse signing.....Brian Roberts 2b?

Should all the winter comments be under the same post?  I understand what they're doing but it refreshes a list of 5-10 comments on an individual guy when there really wasn't any new info.

I love this refrain that Arroyo has said he would be interested in signing with the Mets.  This doesn't mean he wouldn't be interested in signing with a team who offered him more money.  It's meaningless.

Why is it necessary to see the history of this story, some of which was bogus to begin with, every time there is an update on the status? Just give us the latest and be done with it. Jeez.

What if we can get the Yankees to pay 4 or Ichiro 6.5 million and we can try Ichiro at first base and leadoff?  i know its crazy but thinking outside the box

I'll throw an example...if the mets offer 2 yrs to arroyo and arroyo says ill sign if u give me 3, is wilpon going to have to get involved again?? I don't want to lose arroyo to the pirates or phillies because we didn't give him a 3rd year...

It scares me to say that we may only have granderson and maybe Arroyo because of wilpon...

Bo Beck

Why isn't Morse a Met yet, he can platoon at 1b and take some games in the OF especially if Young flounders.

I don't know about the rest of u but I'm starting to get a headache with this payroll stuff and all the inactivity, it was like pulling teeth trying to get granderson and far be it from me to defend the wilpon's but Alderson did not want to go 4 yrs on granderson, ownership told Alderson get it done..that scares me...I expected the wilpon's to have to get dolan like and get involved, but not this quickly and I expected it to be a lot bigger then granderson. ..

Get it done Sandy ! Arroyo will be perfect with the Mets. Offer 3 years at 36 Mil

Ron Davis

I hope they can work out a deal if he really wants to pitch for us he could do a back loaded deal like 8.5 first year and maybe a 12 million second season.

A lot of cut and pasting every day of "the mets have interest in Bronson Arroyo"..The mets have little interest in Bronson Arroyo"

"Reds may trade Brandon Phillips"

"Mets' may trade Daniel Murphy"

"Sandy says payroll will go up"

"Sandy says Mets must consider payroll"

"Mets interested in everybody"

"Yankees sign everybody"

I think the Mets are 73 million so far if they trade Murph and Ike sounds like they have around 22 million left to spend. Of course that does not include the salaries they import, unless they are dealt for prospects. It seems as though if these guys are traded it will likely be for a major leaguer.

I wonder if the Mets are going to be in on Halladay?

After hearing about the target payroll for next year it sounds like he is too expensive.

Not everyone visits the site religiously. It is useful to see the whole report. If you want to see the latest, just look at the top update under the story.

Sandy wants power at first and if we do that we lose a chip and a little payroll flexibility ...

@nagel100 Absolutely. Incredible how he continues to perform.  He'd prob ]ably net 10 mm + but is worth it in this market.

@Mont5 I'd put Garza and Jimenez in that category, but they won't look at any of them.

I am not a big Ervin Santana fan. he had a great year i am not sure if he won't go the other way this year. he has up and then down years.

dave27a

@anthony G. Decesare LOL.  You bought that?!  Alderson is the professional - he either recommended the 4th year or the Wilpons told him to just go do it out of fear that it would look like the cuffs were still on.   Either way, if you think the Wilpons pulled a Steinbrenner and came down with the extra cash solely to deliver a player to their beloved fans, I hear the bridge in the Mets logo is for sale....

Why should the Mets have 2 Lucas Duda's

Arroyo is worth at least 3 yrs.  I'd project 33-35M total

p8erbaghad

@Agee's Catch Yea, but at least at Costco, you at least get some free samples.  The Mets will get nothing, and like it.

p8erbaghad
p8erbaghad

@1metfan and if they trade Wright for a box of balls, they'll have 42 mil to spend.  I just don't understand why some are so keen to trade Murphy like we have a young Pedroia waiting in AAA.  Murphy will make roughly twice as much as EYJ but is at least 4 times the hitter that EYJ is.  You guys just don't appreciate good cheap talent when you have them right in front of you.

Bo Beck
Bo Beck

Simple Morse is right handed can play both OF and 1B and Morse is a much better fielder then Duda. Davis is getting traded and Satin offers no pop at all.

Bob Wolfe
Bob Wolfe

Morse is much better than Lucas Duda.

1metfan

@p8erbaghad I never said I wanted him to be traded, I just think they will.

Jonathan Bonanno
Jonathan Bonanno

this has been debated ad nauseum on this site.  truth is that Murph's (relatively) high average does not compensate for his lack of power, lack of walks and inability to make routine plays at 2B.  he's a solid addition for a playoff team looking to get some production from that position.  for the Mets, he's expendable.

Bo Beck
Bo Beck

And Morse has one bad year every four years. Last year in 88 games he hit 13 HR's, 18 in 2012 with a 321 OBP. He's hit over 270 over 4 of the last five years. He's hit over 300, hit over 30 HR's. He'd be a huge pick up.

p8erbaghad
p8erbaghad

@Jonathan Bonanno Considering the fact he'll likely make less than Chris Young this year, I'd say he's quite valuable for the Mets given their alleged lack of money.
