Dec 9: Infield Rumors from the Winter Meetings

8:50 pm: The Blue Jays are exploring upgrades at first base, and have inquired about free agent James Loney as well as trades for Rangers 1B Mitch Moreland and Marlins 1B Logan Morrison (Davidi).

7:23 PM: The Giants have shown interest in signing free agent 1B Michael Morse, but expect the dollars and years to be too high for them (Baggarly).

6:31 pm: The Royals don’t appear to be interested in free agent 2B Omar Infante (Dutton).

5:36 pm: The Cubs are not interested in trading SS Starlin Castro (Arguello).

5:08 pm: The Nationals are shopping INF Danny Espinosa (Passan).

4:30 pm: The Dodgers could trade for an infielder if they fail to re-sign INF Juan Uribe (Hernandez).

3:36 pm: Diamondbacks GM Kevin Towers said he would consider moving a shortstop for a young starting pitcher (Gilbert).

3:30 pm: The Pirates, Brewers, Blue Jays and Rays are all “possibilities” to land Marlins 1B Logan Morrison (Heyman), although the Rays haven’t engaged Miami about Morrison (Sherman).

Michael Baron, Contributor

3:30 pm: This is worth watching, as the Mets simultaneously shop both Ike Davis and Lucas Duda. Should the Marlins successfuly deal Morrison first, that would result in one less landing spot for either of the Mets trade candidates, and cool the market for both as a result.

2:15 pm: The Royals recently met with the agents for 2B Omar Infante (Rojas).

12:20 pm: The Padres expect to keep 3B Chase Headley (Shaikin).

12:10 pm: The Angels will consider trading 1B Mark Trumbo, because they know he’s their best chip to move (Rosenthal).

Dec. 8: The Nationals could look to sign free-agent C John Buck (Ladson).

Dec. 8: The Mariners have received a lot of interest in infielder Dustin Ackley (Heyman).

I expect the mets to add power with a Ike trade and a ss aswell as a starter these two will cost us Murphy I'm sure but our lineup will look so much better preview 2b Eric young jr Cf Juan Lagares 3b David wright Lf Curtis granderson Rf Chris young 1b Lucas duda C Travis d'arnaud Ss Ruben tejada P zack wheeler

Lots of calls for Owings, but I'm just not sold.  mlb.com has his prospect grades at the below.  5 is average.

Scouting Grades* (present/future): Hit: 3/5 | Power: 3/5 | Run: 5/5 | Arm: 5/5 | Field: 5/5 | Overall: 4/5

so yeah, average major leaguer for all the tools with his hit tool and power lagging behind.  servicable, butI feel like we should be able to do better for Montero who has the following scouting grades:

Scouting Grades* (present/future): Fastball: 6/7 | Curveball: 4/5 | Changeup: 5/6 | Control: 4/5 | Overall: 5/6

Well above average fastball, above average change, and league average curve tossed in here and there.  I know we have pitching depth and it makes sense to deal from depth, but I think Montero should bring us something better.  I'd love to package him with someone for a Javier Baez (the cubs have castro) or maybe an Alen Hanson from Pitt (who also needs a lefty handed 1b, maybe we add Duda)

I would love to get Owings.  Heck, i would give them Montero or DeGrom if that gets it done and even toss in another good lower level minor league pitcher if that is all it takes.

I also was thinking, that Murphy is better and cheaper than Drew and we can get one of their extra starting pitchers.  I would like to take a look at Dubront or Peavey and make them eat some of the contract.

... I would trade Gee or Montero for one of Arizona's young SSs.   we have to address the SS problem.

Get Infante and put him at short.

Teams may not consider Drew because it can cost them a draft pick. If I was the Mets FO and I thought Drew was a fit, I would not worry losing a draft pick. We need to jump-start the team now and Drew could help to make it happen. What do you guys think?

Mets are meeting with Bartolo Colon's reps...I guess we need to stayed tuned for more developments.

I think the best we will get is a rule 5 infielder who plays ss and maybe a pitcher like Jason Hammel one year 2.5 million Free Agent

We're going to need a backup C. Any shot we can get Buck on the cheap?

OT: Just got a text that the Mets met with Bartolo Colon. On a one-year deal, he'd be pretty good until the young guys are ready.

Alderson should call the Rangers and see what it would take to get Andrus. I would not give up Wheeler and/or Syndergaard for him though.

beerfinger

Just found his contract info. It's $120M for 8 years. Considering he'll be 31 years old when it ends, that's not a horrible contract. Still not sure why the Rangers would trade him after signing him to an extension.

Then get a SS, a reliever and a back-up C.

How about a trade with the Angels....  Murphy, Davis, Tejeda ,Niese & prospect for Kendrick & Trumbo.  The Angels need pitching.  Then we sign Colon & another pitcher for a 1 yr plus 1 yr option

I think it is easier for t hem to move Davis for a SS.  More teams want the power bat 1st base/DH type.  His salary will also be a bit easier to take as an incentive for someone to save more money.

I think I may have the wrong definition of "underperform" but, can ANYONE please explain to me how has Andrus underperformed? I'm dying to know. Thanks in advance.

Hmm Pirates looking for a 1b?  wonder if they'd want Ike or Duda and what useful piece we could get in return.

Andres and Moreland and Scheeps for Price?

Andrus has under-performed and the Rangers want a BIG return in trade. Sorry, unless the Rangers pony up a large portion of his contract money due , Andrus is not going to be a Met.

Andrus wouldn't be bad, with that contract though forget it.

Does this mean they finally dropped the relevant word from every post??  Either they figured it out or were the last one's in on the joke.

I'm assuming this came from a previous article about Profar and Andrus: "Andrus may be difficult to deal because he has underperformed and he’s guaranteed around $130 million through 2022. I imagine Texas will have to pick up a good portion of their tabs if they intend to trade either player, which might also increase the cost in terms of prospects."

Cuz I'm not sure who "their" and "either" is referring to.

I also like the idea of Espinoza who has a glove to go with his bat, even if that bat has been inconsistent.

@David Schoenfeld Baez is a top 10, maybe top 5 prospect.  The Pittsburgh OFer is top 50.  Montero is much lower.  #94 or 95 according to MLB (Owings is 84).

I think Montero for Owings is a great trade considering Owings is further along in his development, and plays the premium position.

jasonbay
jasonbay

@helloboy Sorry, not following, you're saying trade Murph to the Sox?  What position would he play for them?

Oh man, how I would love for the Mets to pluck one of these young SS from Arizona. Get it done Sandy. A package around Montero should do.

particularly since it would be 3rd round pick for Mets

I know Minny was interested and earlier today i read the Nationals are interested in him to back up Ramos. how about Suzuki?

a triple slash of .271/.328/.331 is not good, especially when the expectation is that he'd continue to improve from his previous seasons.  that batting line makes him a bottom of the order player, and no matter how well he fields bottom of the order players dot get or deserve $100M contracts.  if he could return to having even a 700 OPS with a .350 or better OBP he might reclaim some of his value, but in a nutshell what he did in 2013 is underperforming, at least relative to his contract/cost.

Luis Torres Quiñones
Luis Torres Quiñones

@Bong Bongadowski It basically took away the idea of having and maintaining a discussion. With the old format you could see if anybody replied to anything you said and it would take you to the exact spot where the reply happened. It was pretty sweet. This new format just makes everything less engaging.

OT - I like the other way much better

Luis Torres Quiñones
Luis Torres Quiñones

@Charlie Griffin He was talking about Andrus and Kinsler, I thought he slipped up and said Andrus underperformed instead of Kinsler, but then I asked him and he really means it.

Luis Torres Quiñones
Luis Torres Quiñones

@David Schoenfeld He was a $5M player in 2013, he'll be a $6.5M player in 2014. He had a 4.3 WAR, a career high. He had only 12 less hits than his previous year, scored 91 runs. He's only 24 years old. I don't think we get to say he underperformed, even if he dropped a couple of points on avg and obp he'd still be better than anything we've been putting on the field.

David Schoenfeld
David Schoenfeld

I'm generally a believe in WAR but I think it overvalues defense especially since UZR and such fluctuates so much year to year.  This team needs some offense and preferably OBP from somewhere.  Middle Infield seems the likeliest source esepcially since you can live without power from a middle infielder.  If Andrus consistently had a 360+ OBP and played a great SS he might be worth that deal, but as it stands right now I don't think he does.  Again, this isnt to say he won't prove me wrong, but I think the risk outweighs the reward unless some of the risk is mitigated.

Don't forget, it isn't like the Rangers give us Andrus and get nothing back.  They're going to want something of value also.

Luis Torres Quiñones
Luis Torres Quiñones

@David Schoenfeld I understand what $1.12M per win means in this market. He's getting $15M through his prime years. There's a reason for that number, $15M, or do you think Texas has no GM somehow and they just arrived at that figure by chance? No. Basically, a win is calculated to cost around $5M on average, right now it's going for a bit higher than that, players like Chris Young, who posted a -0.0 WAR last year, are getting $7M. So, the Rangers calculated that Andrus would be around 3 wins per year. Andrus has, in any case, outperformed his value.

David Schoenfeld
David Schoenfeld

if you dont understand the difference between a good baseball player and a good value, or understand but refuse to acknowledge it, it's pointless to armchair GM.

Of course he's better than anything we've been putting on the field, that's not the point.  So is Stephen Drew, but that doesn't make Drew a $100M baseball player.  It's perfectly feasible (and is in fact often the case) that good players arent worth their contracts.  From a value perspective that's underperforming.

if we could get him for 2014 6.5 mil that would be a great deal, but unfortunately it comes with a heck of a lot more money for a heck of a lot more years.  Maybe it turns out he is worth it by then, but there's a decent possibility he doesn't and for the risk averse that makes him a bad target unless you can get the Rangers to eat some of the risk (money).
