With Sandy Alderson and Andrew Friedman in the same building this week, I have to believe the two will be discussing one of the Mets available first baseman. Ike Davis and Lucas Duda are screaming of a Joe Maddon reclamation project. As I’ve said many times before, its a strong fit for both clubs, so this is definitely worth watching over the next few days…

Well, like I expected, they plan to stick to Tejada and murphy. They're going to use the money on piching. Forget Drew. Forget a trade. They're going with Tejada. Not sure what will happen with Davis. Maybe they trade him for a reliever. At this point, that 17-20 million looks like it's going into pitching.

There are several options for us at SS.  Obviously Stephen Drew is the best option on the free agent market, but there are several options via trade from teams that have a number of SS.

Cleveland-  Asdrubal Cabrera, Dorrsys Paulino, Francisco Lindor, Ronny Rodriguez & Jose Ramirez (2B/SS).  They are looking for a 3B to pair with CHisenhall who hits LH.  Wilmer Flores fits that description perfectly, and they are also looking for young SP.  Rafael Montero?  They want to move Asdrubal Cabrera, but he is a free agent after the season, and is not very good defensively.  They would like to get Francisco Lindor in the lineup in June/July, so I wonder if they would trade Ronny Rodriguez who will be in AAA to start 2014 for Flores or Montero, and we could sign M. Kawasaki to leadoff and play SS on a 1 yr deal until Rodriguez is ready.  Its worth a shot, and could fill a hole for us for many years to come.

Davis for Escobar straight up might not work because Escobar has more value. I don't think the Rays do that. And it would leave them thin at SS. But if Alderson adds Tejada, it gives them a SS replacement and it also balances the salaries. 5 million comes over for Escobar and roughly 4.5 million goes out with Davis and Tejada.

I suggest Davis and Tejada for Escobar. It would hurt to lose Tejada but they can go to Tovar or sign Quintanilla. Tejada is nice to have, but replaceable with other options. After solving SS, they can go and use the 17-20 million on a starter and two relievers.

As for Murphy, I don't see him getting traded. It's going to be difficult to find a fit for him.

We need to be more aggressive man, I cant believe Jeff Wilpon had to tell Sandy get Grandy, Sandy is way too passive, this is not Oak.

I would try to get Nick Franklin why not he is a ss . they take Duda and call it a day.

Not sure if he has the skills to play it t the major league level, but if he can I'd love for the Mets to bring in Franklin from Seattle if they can match up and throw him at SS.

I think Lucas should get traded over Ike.

Seattle is looking for a first baseman and, since signing Cano, they have a spare middle infielder, trade Davis for an infielder.

With the mets looking for power and not someone long term I don't understand why there isn't any interest in mark Reynolds. ...I know he strikes out a lot but the dude hits tons of home runs when he plays and he can play first base...one year deal and he could be traded if we aren't in the playoff race come deadline time...I've always liked him as a player I think he plays hard and could posibly thrive here...he's friends with david wright also

I know some on here think that Ike and Duda have no trade value and that interest in them is weak but if you look at them as first baseman who basically play every day and get the normal 600 at-bats they both are pretty valuable players in todays game where offensive production is down.

Ike per 600 ABs .242 27 83 .334

Duda per 600 ABs .226 24 83 .342

Now since both are lefty they probably would not get 600 ABs even if they played every day, more like 550 or so, so you can shave those numbers a bit.  Both guys produce at a similar rate with Ike being the better defender with more upside but also a bigger downside IMO.  I think that these guys do have value and if Alderson plays his cards right he can flip one for useful piece.

Who would you rather trade? Ike or Duda?  I feel like Ike could hit 35Hrs or he could hit .150 and strike out a ton where as Duda can probably hit 20-25 and be a little more consistent.  I guess it just depends on the deal.

Direct quote: "The Pirates intend to look for a first baseman, starting pitching, and a shortstop." Talk about butting heads.

It will be interesting to see how the Mets and Pirates make out after the winter meeting is over.

Guys, I'm really sorry, but Ike Davis has no trade value what so ever.  If we trade Ike to the Rays for Escobar, we would have to add Montero.

Also, if you take Satin's ABs vs LHP and combine them with Duda's ABs vs RHP, they would be among the most productive 1B in the league.

Lucas Duda hit .240/.370/.462 vs RHP last season with 12 HRs in 225 ABs.

David Wright    .296/.357/.479 vs RHP last season with 12 HRs in 311 ABs

Daniel Murphy .292/.331/.459 vs RHP                            12 HRs in 442 ABs

Marlon Byrd                                                                     14 HRs in 286 ABs

Whether you like Duda or not is not the point.  He absolutely crushes RHP.  He is a far far better hitter than Ike Davis in every way shape and/or form.  He is our best hitter vs RHP.  Better than David Wright, & Danny Murphy who both hit RHP well in their own right.

And for all of you that think Ike Davis is the next CHris Davis, its more likely that Duda is they next CHris Davis, as CHris Davis attributed his turnaround to be able to play 1B everyday, and not having to play 3B or OF, and being comfortable defensively.  That sounds a lot more like Duda than it does Davis.

The Wilpons are amazing owners. We are lucky to have them as Met fans. The new commenting system is great too. ;-)

This makes sense financially, but the Mets may have to expand on it with a prospect. Deal Ike and Tejada to TB for Escobar and Lobaton. Rays have Molina and Hanigan, so Lobaton becomes expendable. Gives us a switch hitting backup to TDA. Escobar is an upgrade over Tejada and has one year at 5 mil guaranteed if he doesnt work. Contracts are a wash as Ike should make about 4.5 in Arb with Tejada making 1 mil.

Anyone heard anything about Encarnacion in Toronto?  He would be the big power bat I'd like to see happen...are they shopping him?  What would they be looking for? Positions of need...

@Ron Davis You realize Mariner's fans / blogs are proposing using Nick Franklin as a key trade chip to get David Price, right?  Your valuation of both players seems off.

jasonbay

@Ron Davis You're not seriously suggesting that the Mariners would accept zero value Duda for very valuable Nick Franklin??????

dexx

@Ron Davis

.209/.326/.334  9  HRs  317  ABs-  Ike Davis

.223/.352/.415  15  HRs  318  ABs- Lucas Duda

Also recall that Ike's stats would look worse but he platooned the 2nd half as they protected him from LH pitching where as Duda played everyday, including facing LH pitching.

Also the league has figured out that Davis can't hit a single HR in Citi Field unless he pulls it right down the RF line.  All they have to do is thrown off speed pitches & fastball on the outside part of the plate, and he is basically another pitcher trying to hit.  Duda has power to all fields, and doesn't need to pull the ball as he has legitimate power the other way.

One more thing to consider is that the number one reason players say they struggle at the plate is if they are playing a position they aren't comfortable in.  Chris Davis said it was the main reason for his turnaround.  "I was able to play 1B everyday."  Chris Young said something very similar after being signed with the Mets.  "I struggled at the plate while I was adjusting to playing RF"  What's Ike's excuse?

@owlnut I'm pretty sure they are not looking for a 1B.  Justin Smoak is going to play 1B.  THey are looking to add an OF with power and/or a DH, Closer & a #3 or #4 SP

jasonbay

@owlnut I'd like to be in on Nick Franklin at 2B, he's got much higher upside than Murphy.  I don't think we match up well though.

they have the same type of first baseman they may bring back the guy they got from the Angels last year.  they have Justin Smoak.  they do not have a ss we can trade for anyway,

@lou2565 I thought i read somewhere that the Blue Jays decided not to trade Encarnacion or Bautista this off season. But obviously it would be awesome to have someone with his production.

Marcus Jensen
Marcus Jensen

@jasonbay @Marcus Jensen Why? That's a reasonable claim, but why? I think it's enough, because Escobar is 31 and he's leaving anyway. The Rays like Davis,he's young, and has power. Tejada is a league average defender at SS (not easy to find) who is capable of league average offense.

So, while it isn't perfect, I see it as fairly even.

Marcus Jensen
Marcus Jensen

@niesesnose Davis for Escobar has been talked about for weeks in the media. I know you're probably going to cite both Davis' and Tejada's pathetic #'s and then Escobar's good regular production to support your case.

You're typical of the casual fan that's going to rush to devalue both Davis and Tejada. GM's often don't see it that way. The Rays originally drafted Davis, did you know that? They've been coveting him a long time.

With Escobar leaving and also 31, trading him for Davis is a real possibility, something many in the media have suggested for weeks now.

Marcus Jensen
Marcus Jensen

@niesesnose Because Escobar leaves for free agency after next season anyway. Beckham is ready to step into 2B and they could move Zobrist to SS. Tejada can provide insurance, and Davis, whom they've always coveted, can be the lefty 1B they've been looking for.

I'm not sure if you really know what's going on, but you react like you think it's an insanely lopsided trade and looks like you're now looking to criticize it violently, which is typical for someone that basically doesn't understand what's going on in any depth. Please don't waste my time if that's all you're going to do.

The Rays like Davis. Have you been following? Again, don't waste my time if you are going to claim it's so unbelievably lopsided. It isn't.

@jasonbay @Ron Davis Yes apparently the Mets can just make them take Duda and call it a day.  They have no say in the matter.

dexx

@Ron Davis They have Miller & now Franklin as Franklin played SS in the minors.  Franklin is a switch hitter, and the Mariners lineup is filled with LH hitters.  I really think we could make a play for Brad Miller, and the Marines could move Franklin to SS to break up some of the LH bats.

Rafael Montero or Wilmer Flores & Tejada for Brad Miller might work.  Heck I'd take either one at this point.

dexx
dexx

@Goorru®Mets OK.  I'll believe there is interest in Ike Davis when I see it.  The Brewers turned down an offer of Ike Davis for Norichika Aoki, and then traded Aoki to the Royals for a LH relief pitcher

@jasonbay Ok, you don't know what's going on. Goodbye. I knew you were just another human monkey that wanted to pound its fists. See ya buddy. If only there was a way to delete all the unintelligent cretins on this thing.

jasonbay
jasonbay

@Marcus Jensen @jasonbay @niesesnose All I said was it's not enough.  You want to know why?  Because Tejada has ZERO value to anyone in baseball, particularly the Rays.  They have several SS options better than him.  Escobar has a lot of value as a serviceable big league SS with decent numbers, affordable contract and only one year on the deal.  That makes him more valuable than Davis.

I don't see a match.  I also don't imagine other teams caring much for Davis.

Marcus Jensen
Marcus Jensen

@jasonbay @Marcus Jensen @niesesnose And again, if you guys are just casual fans without much idea what's happening, don't waste my time screaming at me because you think it's a "stupid trade."

Argue why you think it's not going to work. I'm open to that. But I'm not going to waste more time on here with fans who don't really know what's going on. Not saying you two are that, but the way you reacted makes it sound like you're trying to cause problems already.

Just argue why you think it won't work rather than cursing me for being stupid for suggesting it. That's the surest sign of someone that doesn't know what's going on.

lgm86
lgm86

@Marcus Jensen @niesesnose Such an arrogant tone to your posts!  You're acting like a "casual fan" who is overrating Mets players simply because it's the only team you follow.  A large part of Alderson's job is to build a market for these players and one of the most effective methods to do that is to leak vague rumors to the media.  Why are you believing everything you're reading in the media and taking it at face value?

And if the Rays originally drafted Davis and they covet him so highly, why did they get rid of him in the first place?  Honest question - I don't know the answer.  I tried Googling it to see if he was involved in a trade but I couldn't find anything.

@lou2565 @xavier22 They want young, controllable, proven starting pitching. So the conversation starts with Niese plus prospects...
