Dec 6: The latest, relevant outfield rumors from around MLB

9:45 pm: The Yankees have signed free agent OF Carlos Beltran to a three-year deal (Feinsand) worth $45 million (Brown).

Michael Baron, Contributor

Between his diminished defensive abilities and the awkward history between Beltran and the Mets, I just never saw him coming back to Queens. I always thought he was a good fit for the Yankees, and they were reportedly his first choice throughout the off-season. I bet he will DH for them a lot of the time, which will help preserve his legs over the course of the long season.

It’s going to be interesting to see what the Yankees do with their excess outfielders. They now have Beltran, Brett Gardner, Vernon Wells, Alfonso Soriano, Jacoby Ellsbury, and Ichiro Suzuki on the roster. I could see them cutting Wells, but I also wonder if they might consider trading someone like Gardner. If so, he’s a good fit for the Mets as insurance to Juan Lagares and a left-handed option to Chris Young - perhaps the Mets would consider a deal involving Daniel Murphy for Gardner (even though the Yankees just signed Kelly Johnson).

Either way, it’s hard to envision them being in on Shin Soo-Choo right now…

4:40 pm: The Nationals agreed to sign free agent OF Nate McLouth to a two-year contract. He will be their fourth outfielder (Rosenthal).

12:00 am: The Royals have no offered free agent OF Carlos Beltran a three-year contract (Rosenthal).

12:00 am: The Red Sox are looking for a right-handed hitting corner outfielder (Lauber).

12:00 am: The Marlins are interested in re-signing free agent OF Chris Coghlan, even though they non-tendered him earlier this week (Frisaro).

I would not trade Murphy or any of our pitching for Gardner.  He is a FA soon, and wasn't the point of getting Chris Young, his defense, and paying Granderson justified by how much better he is than Duda?

To me the notion of trading for Gardner is nonsense unless you trade Granderson for him.

I would not trade Murphy for Gardner, but I'm not opposed to us getting him, but not sure who I'd want to give up.

Clearly a wise move. He can DH and the park will aid his production. 3 year deal. Happy for Carlos.

Question for the Mets blogosphere.  At $15M/per, would you rather have Grandy's age 33-36 seasons or Beltrans' age 37-39 seasons?

The new system is certainly less cliquey... Give us notifications and blind dislikes that just negate likes but no negative scores...

Youth fans dreaming of Gardner:

I know with Saturday newspapers and the weekend set up to set mobile offices at the Winter meetings that that fewer teams will leak out major signings this weekend, especially with key physicals needed to be done by Monday.

Isn't it all too ironic that like always a Steinbrenner could not wait 24 hours after the CG signing to leak of Beltran's?

They did wait all day but not beyond nrwspaper deadlines if that matters anymore?

There will be no easy trade for any Yankee that can potentially embarrass the Bronx staff unless

we trade trade Met HOF Wright that can eventually retire a Yankee or end up in their booth: Straw, Doc, Coney, Leiter, or Seaver. Did I miss any of our few icons?

If the Yanks can leverage signing a non tender Met count on it. Anything... For when it comes to the Mets and Red Sox, it is ... .

Since the Mets have said that Young will be close to a full-time player, the starting outfield for the New York Mets will most likely be Chris Young in right field, Juan Lagares in center field, and Granderson in left field. Eric Young Jr., who was tendered a contract for 2014, will likely serve as a fourth outfielder. The Mets have plenty of options for the fifth outfield spot. Young and Lagares are both above average center fielders and even Granderson can probably play there in a pinch, so it seems unlikely that the Mets will place a strong emphasis on their fifth outfielder being able to play center.

Gardner is a very streaky player, but when he's on he's on he's one of the most exciting players in baseball.   If the Yankees can get an arm in return, they might be willing to move Gardner who can hit, steal 50 plus bases and play a solid defensive outfield.  He's a huge upgrade over EY Jr.

I'd love to see Gardner move to Queens. He's a solid lead off hitter who really knows how to work a count. Like Granderson he's had one of the highest Pitches Per Plate Appearance rates in the league most of his career. That being said, I don't see that happening. I'm wondering if the Yankees plan on packaging and extra OF with some of their organizational depth at catcher to bring in another SP or a closer.

We still have all of our trade chips.  We ought to be able to get something going to improve the team.

We need a shortstop, not a backup for Lagares. Gardner would be a nice lead off solution, but it is more of a stretch than good fit

I wonder, would the Cubs consider a package of:

Montero or Gee, Flores, Tejada, deGrom, and one of our young SS prospects (Cechinni or Rosario)

For

Castro and Samardjzia

That's giving the Cubs 2 major league ready SP, a major league ready 3b (or 2b), a future SS, and a stop gap SS.

The Mets get their starting SS/leadoff hitter and a decent replacement for Gee or Montero.

Thoughts?

I'm not a Yankee fan, but I can't help admire what they'e done this week.  They may truly be able to just outscore everyone.

The Murphy/Gardner trade wreaks of a fan idea. Cannot think of any other players that are more talked about trading in New York.

I'm thinking we could trade Murph for Gardner.

REALLY wish we hadn't rushed to give Chris Young $7M.  With Choo still available, and several other big name players already signed if Choo could be had for less than $100M now, I would MUCH rather have him over Chris Young.  Heck, with $30M if the Mets came away with JUST Granderson & Choo I would be ESTATIC!.

We need to work out a deal for a SS. Mariners, Cubs, Rangers, Indians.....get on the horn.

would be nice to see if we can land morse to a "cheep" contract to see if he can have a bounce back year

Murphy could end up being traded to any team in the AL east including believe it or not the red sox, they could use a 1b, a guy that can play 3b as well....they have excess starting pitching to trade, they would probably deal wither peavy or Lackey.

Murphy for Lackey?

Or

Ike, Murphy and Montero for peavy or lester? I doubt lester...

Sox are talking about a matt kemp trade where their young ss and cf could go to the dodgers and they bring back drew for ss.

@jasonbay Granderson because of the defense and age.

What player subdues their ultimate legacy for ......?

Beltran was estactic at his Met news conference but it came down to highest bidder...

Who is chasing the dollar more post Catfish Hunter? Player or owners?

Maybe society, media and fans made contributions here?

Brett Favre on the Vikings because Aaron Rodgers could not play back up for 7 years?

Is that a rationale?

@Tom Gallagher If we can't trade for Jose Reyes (where we kill 2 birds with 1 stone) as our SS and lead-off hitter, then I hope we can workout a trade for Gardner for oour lead-off spot. he's a good OF/Hitter.

You prefer dribble and hate-mail over down-votes? Be careful what you wish for.

Meh the downvotes were fun. People just got way too butt hurt over them. If someine wasnt willing to reply and explain their point if view who cares if they clicked a button? And sometimes a post was just plain supid/obnoxious, no comment needed.Complaining about down votes is 12 year old girl stuff.

The no notifications thing really sucks though. Hard to have a legit conversation now.

Gardner is better than Lagares.  We already have plenty of CF.  We need a lead-off hitter.  Gardner could fill that role for us.  Lagares would be a terrific 4th OF.

dooley

Cubs have one of the best 3B prospects in the game on the fast track to the Majors, so I doubt they would be interested in Flores. They also have Baez, a VERY highly touted prospect at short so you can also scratch Tejada, Cecchini, and Rosario as potential fits. Plus those players have more value to us than any other team.

Castro is not a prototypical lead off hitter but he does fill a need at short. Cubs need pitching, but I would be hesitant to give it up for him. Instead I would rather acquire Baez or Soler, but I think they value them more than we value Thor.

Gland1
Gland1

Lets see what they get when they do trade Samardjzia and then we can compare this offer to that.

@supert What makes you so sure that Granderson will be better than Young?

Gland1
Gland1

Young has nothing to do with signing Choo. you think after signing Granderson they are going to give out another long term deal to an OF at 15mil plus a year? Even Choo doesn't get 100mil (which i still think he will) he's still probably going to get minimum around 80mill. CY is not the reason thry aren't getting Choo. If anything Granderson is.

dooley
dooley

Still think Choo will end up getting 100 million. Even if we hadn't signed Young there are still many other teams that could easily outbid us. I wish we could have him too.

I was thinking about the exact same thing, in regards to rushing into giving Chris Young $7mil.

@anthony G. Decesare Why so eager to trade Murphy?  And that deal giving up Montero as well, I wouldn't do it.  Montero has big upside.

The sox re-signed Napoli so they wouldnt use him there. 3rds a possibility but I dont think theyre giving up on Middlebrooks yet.

Beltran was happy and who wouldn't be signing that contract but he did go to  the Yankees before he signed with the Mets that is why I said that he really always wanted to be a Yankee I just wish he does not win a ring with them

Macacawitz

@metfan9876 Sure he can.  He'd be used differently with the Mets.  He'd be encouraged to go more than when he was with the Yankees.  Not as many big bats hitting behind him.

@Gland1 I asked Andrew Vazzano about the notfications. He said they're working on getting that fixed.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Choo get north of $130 mil

Agee's Catch
Agee's Catch

@metsstrong You could probably still sign Choo, but you'd have to off load some salary. Davis or Murphy and maybe Neise to free up 10M in 2014. Causes a few other problems (pitching) but solves a few by narrowing down the 1B pool before spring training.

Gland1

That's good news! Thanks Andrew, nice work!

Don't think Lagares would be an issue, and you actually get better production moving CY back to center

metstastic
metstastic

I don't think that was his point. What are you going to do with the OF if you sign Choo? Make Young a reserve for 7M? sit Lagaras? Move Young to 1B?
