Bronson Arroyo

Reds making strong push to sign Bronson Arroyo…

The Mets (Cafardo, Dec. 1), Phillies and Angels (Zolecki, Dec. 9) are among a dozen teams with interest in free-agent RHP Bronson Arroyo.

According to one report on Tuesday, the Mets and Reds were making a strong push to sign him (Wolfson, Dec. 10). It was reported last week that the Twins and Mets were aggressively pursuing him (Cotillo, Dec. 5). However, a follow-up report on Tuesday indicated the Mets are not interested (Heyman), which is similar to what a team official said last week (Rubin, Dec. 2).

The Twins met with Arroyo and his agent Tuesday afternoon (Rosencrans, Dec. 10) and the two sides continue to negotiate a possible deal (Neal, Dec. 10).

In addition to the Twins, the Pirates (Olney, Dec. 9) and Mets (Puma, Dec. 6Cafardo, Dec. 2) were supposedly interested in meeting with Arroyo’s representatives during the Winter Meetings, though the Pirates may no longer be interested  (Biertempfel, Dec. 10).

Arroyo said he has offers on the table, but he is not yet ready to sign a new deal (Cafardo, Dec. 9). He is reportedly looking for a three-year contract (Rubin, Nov. 30) and says he would definitely consider signing with the Mets (Martino, Nov. 1).

Do we REALLY have to trade Montero eventually? I would love to see both starting pitchers of the Citi Field All-Star Futures Game remain in the organization and become the next group of SF/STL/DET studs. Harvey, Wheeler plus those 2 would be great in 2015. I would rather see Niese or Gee go, and I prefer to ship out Niese as he seems to be so up and down every year (can never make the leap to true #2 starter).  Please don't forget Hef either, the Mets signed him cheap so he could rehab with us this year; I would love to see his comeback story with Harvey in 2015.

I'll say this if u sign Arroyo, then come next year when u have harvey and Syndergard full time with Arroyo and Wheeler, gotta admit...Montero along with Neise or Gee is a very nice starting point for a major bat.

Is there anyone to upload a photo to my profile w/o using my FB or Twitter account to sign in?

what happened with the talks of davis, duda, murphy?

I would love for the Mets to get Arroyo. He's a good fit as he's a veteran who eats innings as long as we don't overpay for him.

Arroyo would be a great addition to the staff. He is the perfect bridge between this year and the future pieces of Noah and Montero. Plus it costs us no prospects from teh system

If they have to choose between Drew and Arroyo, I would choose Arroyo. He is a guy who never misses a start. He will give you 200+ innings per year. Drew is injury prone. Once Arroyo is signed, a guy like Montero (or Gee) becomes more tradable.

I'd offer either pitcher to Arizona for Gregorius or Owings. .

If the Mets sign Arroyo, I have to believe there is groundwork laid out to ship Montero out for a SS (hello D'Backs). Perhaps there is common ground after all.

Am I the only one who doesn't want Bronson Arroyo on our team? Honestly, I'd rather take a gamble on Johan, you know he isn't going to be terribly expensive and is a 1 maybe 2 year contract I could get behind.

Follow up report in 2 hours to be: Arroyo out of price range, focusing on Dice-K and Freddy Garcia.

So who would want a 37 year old #4 SP on a 3/35-40 deal over a 31 year ols SS like Stephen Drew for the same amount? Something seems twilight zonish about this.

Gee and Niese are the only current candidates on the staff capable of throwing a full season. Everyone else will be on an innings limit. Someone has to pick up the innings slack as this team transitions to a young staff, and the only pitcher on the market that fits that description is Arroyo.

His value would be more than is obvious from his stats - he'd take pressure off both the starting staff and a very young bullpen. He's also a savvy pitcher, which can help guys like Gee and Wheeler. It also gives you the flexibility to deal a younger arm, or to deal Arroyo at the deadline if it comes to that. It's a good direction, despite the age.

they aren't signing anybody...this is the mets

I would much rather they spend the money on Stephen Drew, and sign acouple of guys like Jake Westbrook, Clayton Richard, Daniel Hudson, Jeff Niemann or James McDonald to hold down the 5 spot in the rotation till Thor and/or Montero are ready.

If they are signing arroyo so they can trade young talent like montero, I'm against it.

Somebody is gonna overpay for arroyo and it won't be the mets.

Apparently not if you are using an SNY account. Just create a different twitter account so the yahoos on here don't bomb your twitter page.

I can see Murphy leaving before Ike. In fact, I still think Ike returns, and hits 30 hrs for the METS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It would be great to land one of the Dbacks young SSs. Which ever one would make the best lead off hitter is the one I would target.

@Vee Langer How many innings has Santana been able to pitch in the last 3 years?  How many do you think he'll be able to throw coming off his 2nd major shoulder surgery in 2014?

They desperately need someone like Arroyo who they can count on to make 30+ starts during the season.

trevordunn

@dexx Johan will be great for 6 starts going 5 innings before his arm falls off by may 10th...Arroyo throws 220 innings in his sleep

I would.  If Arroyo is our #4, were going to win a lot of those match ups.  I'll take the guy with a history of not missing any starts over his past 8 seasons over the guy who hasn't played more than 150 games since 2010.

@md92468 From what I've seen, it isn't very likely that you are going to get a full season from Niese.  It's certainly not something he's very good about accomplishing.

Zach Ripple

@md92468 Wheeler will not have innings limits. He threw 168 professional innings last season. Typical jump is no more than 40, so if he's restricted to 200, is that really a big deal?

dexx
dexx

@md92468 Yeah, but Niese, Gee, Wheeler,Mejia, Torres, Syndergaard & a Dice K or Jake Westbrook should be able to pitch enough innings. You need more than 5 SPs to get through the season with or without Arroyo

Hodges14
Hodges14

@trevordunn Already signed Granderson... that move would make zero sense if they don't surround him with some talent.

Hodges14

@dexx Get Drew and Arroyo.  Those 2 with Granderson makes this a successful off season for the Mets.

Eli Battistoni

@dexx Arroyo is a legitimate #4-5 starter who makes his 30 starts and logs in 200 innings every year.  We need more guys who can eat innings and be durable.

@bugsy Even without knowing what they would get back from a trade involving Montero?  He's an untouchable for you?

I used the sny account, unlike Facebook, you don't have to share so much personal info. But how do I insert my good old beer can chick pix as my picture? Anybody?

Maybe by May if Dr. Frankenstein can re-attach his arm to his shoulder.

md92468
md92468

@Zach Ripple @md92468 Typical jump is 30, but I'd be shocked if they let him pitch 200 this year, particularly after what happened to Harvey. Rightly or wrongly, they're going to be overcautious with Wheeler.

md92468
md92468

@dexx @md92468 Mejia is coming off surgery and he's never pitched more than 90 innings in a season. Torres is a reliever. Syndergaard is good for 140-150 innings total this year, and he's highly unlikely to break camp with the big club. Westbrook isn't signed, and Dice K is awful. You need someone who can take the ball every fifth day, and no one on that list qualifies.

kenmetskni
kenmetskni

Agreed. Unless they signed Granderson as a PR move. Just to get the fan base off of their backs.
